  1. Hi folks I was thinking about a 3 pieces laminate neck for my next bolt on (Ibanez style neck so 14 degree tilt back and JEM profile). I really don't like how the stripe looks in the back mainly in headstock's area (the curve it forms). What do you think of a 3 pieces of maple laminate neck? Is it possible? if yes I would like to know whay I don't see it around. I always see a walnut or wenge stripe. thanks in advance! Gian
  2. It seems many people use Poly clear coat. ATD, Ibanez too. From other discussions on this forum it seems the preferred finish for swirled guitar is polyurethane. I already used it as base coat (2 coat then sanded flat) and I will clear with 3 or 4 coats of poly. It depends from their thickness. Gian
  3. Ah ok, I believed he wanted to suggest me an ebony fretboard. BTW I don't have any ebony dust. I will see if I can find it. The JEM will be a DNA swirl, woods and electronic as above (not mentioned a push/push to split neck PU) and this vine inlay. Projectguitar will be the first place where I will post pictures. Thanks to this community I started my project and I became part of the staff of Progettochitarra.com Stay tuned!!! Thanks everyone Gian
  4. The inlay filler color selling StewMac is more bad yet (IMHO). I don't know if I want to use ebony for this project. 2 pcs alder body, 1/4 sawn maple neck, DiMarzio Tone zone Air Norton PUs. Maybe with an ebony fingerboard it would sound too bright and sharp. Maybe or is it only a worry of mine?
  5. Ok I will sand the perloid on back (I thought about do it). Maybe it's better if I cut the stem with the template and then I cut it in many pieces at each fret slot. So it will be more easy to handle and glue it. For the stem titebond will work fine, for perloid I believe I will use the epoxy with some rosewwod powder mixed in if the route is too big. Thanks
  6. Hi friends I have just received a purpleheart thin board (for the stem), I already have my perloid vine cutted (leafs). I have Dremel, router base, bits (2 mm, 1mm and 0,8 mm). I begin with that perloid pre cutted cuz it's my first attempt, I did read different tutorials but I got some confusion. However my first problem is: The seller said a thick of 3 mm but I discoverd it's thick 3,8 mm (perloid inlay). Thin purplehart board (1/8") but it really is 5 mm. Both eBay. The inlay and board are great but I don't want inlay down 3,8 mm in my fretboard, I think is too much. Can I route down 3mm and in the sanding - filing process level it (sticking out 0,8 mm)? For the stem have I to ask for a thickness sanding to 3 mm to a sawmill? Or If I route down 5 mm the blank fretboard (it is 7 mm thick), glue the wood stem, then radiusing the fretboard and achieve a 5 mm radiused fretboard, would it be better this way? In this case I can easy slot the fretboard, I will saw thru fretboard and stem togheter (of course first to radiusing). BTW for the stem, now I have all in my hands, I have no idea on how cut out the stem from the purpleheart board. In its entire length or many parts? I have a plastic thin sheet template for the vine. I could use that for cut out the stem. Finally any advice on glue is fine. I have a clear slow setting epoxy but I did read so much different thing: epoxy, CA, Hot stuff, franklin hide glue etc. Thanks everyone Gian
  7. Ok thanks Black I wai the codes for the green and black. I seen also Ferrari red and Fluo yellow. I have to serach for a fluo pink. But did you buy that body or you made it? If you bought it, it seems a Jim's body to me
  8. Yes Blacknight I can buy 6 different colors Humbrol paint for 15€ here. I have practiced with scrap and a standard acrylic oil base enamel. It works well but I cannot achieve the colors I want with those (no fluorescent like the green for example). I will buy the Humbrol and try. I hope they aren't really thick as he said on tut. Also I seen there's no need of too much borax. Yeah ... I am impatient to see your tut too. i will stay tuned. Gian Does anyone know humbrol codes for the colors needed for a DNA swirl? (black, neon green - pink - yellow -red and red blood). Also something near to.
  9. It looks great!!! Cheers!!!! But how did you find humbrol paint works? I read in tutorial to don't use tester model paint. Some guys told me Humbrol is one of these togheter with Ravell etc. I was just thinking to use urethane paint for swirl jobs. What do you think of this, will it work? I have the possibility to buy Humbrol but for the reason above I am undecided.
  10. Hi guys I can't find the template of Tom Anderson's drop top. Does anybody know where I can find it? Thanks Gian
  11. Mmm... cuz my two JEMs have it so, (1 one piece and the 2 has laminate neck (maple, walnut, maple). On both I can see the scurf begins on 3rd fret and angle is 13 or maybe 14 degrees. I heard around that for strength it's better locate it at 3rd, but maybe I can be wrong!!! Ops may I understand the lapse!!! I mean the point where you glue the piece of maple for the headstock, on both guitars it's on 3rd fret but the piece is big enough to leave a plane surfuce till the nut and there the angled headstock begins.
  12. Too me It seems black (and sand), then tobacco and some amber. If you cut the body try on some scraps. I think at 99% the colors are those.
  13. Definitively if it's a USA Select model it's real MOP. However I would go for a replacement from that I seen from the picture!!!
  14. If you're going for a locking nut, definitely go for it. I seen both neck types with scarf joint. Maybe it's more easy to do it on a 3 pieces laminate neck. After the glue is cured, locate the third fret and start to drawn a line at 13 degrees then cut it. A laminate neck with scarf joint is strong, sure!
  15. Do noboby have a recent Jackson? Or idea on how to shim the floyd?
  16. But finally is it a good thing to shim a floyd? People told me I can't achieve a perfect radius with shims. However you said your jackson is straight 16" and the floyd? If yours it's original it's shimmed too!!! Can you tell how to do it?
  17. I guys I am planning to build a guitar with an OFR. I already asked here what you think about Lo Pro and OFR. I made my guitar with Lo Pro and now I would make a guitar with an OFR. The question is this: I seen OFR and nuts have a 10" radius (and I really don't like a fretboard so). I like near flat radius as 16" and 17". I seen Jackson guitars have a 12 - 16" compound radius fretboard and I would go for a guitar so. First I think they don't use the R4 nut from Floyd cuz it's 10". I suppose they use a 12" nut. But do they use shims under saddles to achieve a 16" radius? This is the only way I can imagine. Do you know how I could mount an OFR on a 12 - 16" compound radius fretboard? Thanks everyone. Gian
  18. Ok I thought about this option but I still have my doubts: quality of birdeyes and usually swan plain or quarter. That guy confused me!!! Help me please!!!
  19. Hi folks I have a question about maples. I have the opportunity of a deal here. there's a guitar makers stopping his business to make amps (his dream he says), so he's selling his wood. Dried almost 10 years!!! He has hard rock maple, birdeyes maple, flame maple for neck, and other woods I need. I would try the birdeyes maple but two things stop me. It's my fist project I haven't any experience with wood, a guy told me that the pattern in the birdeyes maple is a defect of the wood's fiber so it looks great but sounds bad. Is it true? Also to preserve the pattern birdeyes and flame maple are plainsaw and not quarter, is it true? I can buy wood for 10 necks (10 years air dried for 50 Euros). In the italian wood market it's a great deal!!! I can always buy the "simple" maple but i would try the birdeyes, can you clear up for me those doubts? Thanks Gian
  20. It's my first time on a JEM like nack and I'd want an advice on the length of the wood. I have to order a piece of quartersaw hard rock maple. It's wide 70mm, thick 20 mm. Fretborad will be a 5mm thick piece of rosewood. How long have it to be to cut the 14 degrees angle for the scarf joint? Thanks axemen
  21. The Dupont is easy to find in many countries. It's mainly used in auto repair and for this reason is very popular.
  22. I know what is vinyl, i know LPs were made of. I know a lot of thing are vinyl based, glue too. Vinavil?!?!?!? Here in italy I can't find a material called vinyl in shops so I wanted an help to understand better what kind of sheets they are. maybe are simple plastic (vinyl) colored sheet, I will try to search again. What do you think of Stew's Epoxy? And their inlay filler color?
