  1. fo real? its a guitar!!! it thougth for sure it was a bass. hey man itll be the only one aroud more power to you.
  2. christ on high!!! nirvana is not what i think of when the word old is used but i guess it has been a decade. wow tha long already...i remember when i bout nervemind! and i was 6 lol im to young to say thats old. the who could lay it down. i dont think this question can be answered really tho. maybe if you broke it down into best songwriters/most creative and inovative/best rock ya no just sub cat. it up. they are all great man i listen to anyhting that is good
  3. yeah bro thats hot, it says bass all over it to me too. i like it alot keep us posted on the project.
  4. sweet, thanks abunch for the info and replies guys. i am really leaningtoward a v of built to my own specs. i think the simple body style would be a good way to learn. ill pic a scale lenght and buy a used neck for now and then whe i have the kinks out of it i will build a new neck for it. i thougt about a neck threw for a while but that will prabably be harder right? and if i mess up the neck i pretty much have to junk the guitar then. if i set the bridge in place for lets say a 25.5 scale and strap a strat neck to it...my new neck doesnt have to be exactly the same legth and all does it? im a little confuse on how the whole scale thing works. i get that it is for intunational purpose and the nut-12th fret must be the same length and the bridge-12th fret. how do you calculate that for a home built neck right offf the bat? do you jsut wait till all the parts are done and then place the bridge in a nessacasry location? thanks agin for all of your help. oh yeah i went to borders to find a book but couldnt find anything about building them anyone have an idea of were to get a good book? thanks again
  5. alot of views but no posts...obviously im not the only one who doesnt know. i did some more research and i thouhgt id share my findings. PAF stands for patent aplied for. 50's and 60's les paul standards came with them. the reissues by gibson are calld the 57 classic and the 57 classic pro. they are soposed to be a bit brighter sounding than the originals but than again the orignals are 50 years old and that might be a factor. the reissues are said to be a pretty close match.
  6. metal matt i never thought abotu a v that would be pretty narly. i could make a pretty bad ass mahagony strat copy too tho. maiden thatnks for that website its got some cool helpers.
  7. i am assuming it would be alot harder than copying a guitar becuase you first need to come up with a design. then you have. than work out all the kinks. then find out what hardware and all that stuff will be sued and moddify it to work in your aplication.. then when you put it together you have to just hope eveyhting works. if i copy a guitar i know it will all work providing i do it right. you can always miss measure or overlook somthing in your own diesign.
  8. gigabyte... i saw that thread and that si what made me think about doing a prs. the guitar kits on grizzly are already done basically it is more assembeling it than acually creating it. i think i can handel a bit more than just boltin up the parts/wireing and painting. i was looking more along the lines of coping a guitar. using templetes and patterns and what not to make my own from nothing. i was looking for a guitar recamendation that people have done with ease again and again here. i dont know if a strat is more difficult that a lp for example. just need some direction and advice. thanks alot for your replies
  9. hey guys i really want to learn how to do all this cool stuff i see on here. i am young but eager to learn and i htink the best way is to just do it. at first i was going to build a guitar from my own design but that adds a whole nother level of difficulty. i i thought of doing the begginer route and slap two peices of alder into a strat, but i already have a strat. what abotu a prs? is the carved top look hard to achive? i dont know what i should do but i think an exsiting design copy would be best. any thoughts? btw i already have 2000 american strat{auqua marine} 69 fender mustang{white} 87 les paul{white} 90's custom built strat{white lefty} i dont mind a nother one but maybe branching out would be good. thanks for any also for tools, i will be useing a dremel, sander, files, claps, glue, and a jig saw. is there anything else that is cheep and would make the job easier? thanks abunch for any suggestions and ill be sure to keep you posted on the project the craig
  10. that guitar out of control bro. how long did that thing take from start to finish? iv been reading all these for a little while now and almost have the confidence to start my own. any pointers would own. nice work again man its a master piece
  11. lukeR slash uses 2 alnico pro II picups {not exactly paf's} and i still dont think a strat is versitle. you can do so much more with a les paul. maybe in a single song i see a strat being more versitile because of the dynamic changes form the pickupselector. but a les paul can be played with more types of music. if u had a rough day you can play megadeth with a lp and if you want to just kill you can play the blues. with a strat you cant really do that. althouhg i still voted strat because if you know how to play a strat you can bring down the house. i agree, not many people know how to play a strat.
  12. i have a 87 studio les paul and i am looking for that old school classic rock/eraly hard rock sound. i use an 80's boogie head with not to much gain i just crank up that volume and get my crunch that way. my qustion is what pickups should i use. i was thinking of either two duncan 59's or a 59 in the neck and a pearly gates in the bridge. what would you guys suggest?
  13. hey guys im 17 years old and i have been playin guitar about 10 years now. im not to shabby and im not just saying for my age. i play alot of blues with s2 step style and just huge bends and realy abuse my strigns. i use 11 gauge ernie ball's on it. i use the same on my les paul and i broke about 2 strings a week until i swaped the sadles out. now i my stings will go about 2 months. i use the les paul for hard rock{the early hard rock} either way i beat the hell out of my strings. i just keep breaking 11's i need advice. i think im gunna step up to 12's for my strat but when im playin a little faster i dont knwo abotu 12's. my fingers are use to the abuse i can play the 11's for ever so i dont think 12's will take long to get use to but on my les paul what do you suggest? i have used eb's for many years now. and 9's 10's and 11's. iv played dean markley 10's on my lp once, i cantremember why i didnt buy them again but i went back to eb's any suggestions? thanks
  14. i dont think a strat is more versitle than a lp at all. strats sound amazing with blues and the early hard rock/classical rock. im talking about a 3 single coil bearing strat. but you cant go near metal or alot of hard rock with it sounding as good as a less paul. and a les paul can do anyhitng. blue, hard rock, clasic rock, metal, etc. but it jsut cant touch a strat in a strats department.
  15. im gunna start building a from scratch guitar pretty soon. im gunna trty useing the following tools dremel jigsaw some files some sand paper/blocks, etc. a belt sander if need glue/clams is there really anything else you need than that for the body? i know a few more would be neede for the neck but that is what im gunna try with anyways
  16. i think strats are a less versitle guitar but for their type of music i dont think their is anything in the world like them. its like an old lady kinda, it may seem different, ornery and less sturdy than a lp but if you get someone who knows how to rub her the right way you can really make some great tunes. but on stage when im goin to town and everyone is lovin it i dont know if my strat can beat the feeling of my lp because i beat the hell out it and i no my lp can take it. {for bluse tho i love me a strat} i vote strat
  17. it is a hard choice i honestly dont know
  18. thanks fo rthe advice. i have a few more questions tho on that. why wouldnt i jusut sue an alnico 2 pro humbucker vs. the 2 single coil idea you have? i have one in my suctom strat, would the two sound the same? and is there a diference between a single coil and splitting a humbucker? one thing i found strange was that my alnicoIIpro in my strat has a chrome plate over it and it isnt the two single coil look that the rest are. i still have the box tho it clearly says its the right pickup. do they make them like that or did they send me the wrong one. thanks again
  19. hey guys im looking to swap the pickups out of my 87 studio les paul for a more vintage sounding pickups so i can get that old rock sound from the 70's style rock. i tried serching for them on google and ebay and such and keept geeting 59 reissue pickups and reissues of everything. i think p 90/s are cool to but i dont really know anyhting other than they are all old. can you guys tell me the scoop on what the differences is between the reissues/originals/ and all that good stuff. thanks abunch
  20. ok guys i need opinions for pickups for my first form scratch project. the guitar pics can be found in the finished works section the thread is titled "first sketch". it is basically going to be a semi-hollow body{mahogany} guitar built for nothing but blues. im going to use a 25.5 scale on it so i can use a strat style neck with huge frets. im thiniking a fender mustang bridge. now like i said i want a bluesy tone. i was thinking of a seth lover humbucker for the bridge and then 1 or 2 lace sencors for the mid/ neck or jsut neck. maybee vintage pickups and a seth lover. they will probably be monted in a customized jagstang pickgaurd so they will have the radical angle. any thoughtswould be appreciated. thanks the craig
  21. haha thanks its ok we all have thos days. i agree the fornt of it looks bland and needs work but i dont know exactly what i want to do whith is yet. its my first from scratch guitar iv ever built. the only other one i built was form exsiting parts i threw together. it is the all white guitar on that same page as the sketch. i still have to paint it tho. i hope it turns out nicely not to many of the people in my local scene have home made guitars. im 17 and a jr. but still not i was praised for the first one i did and its not done. lol this one will be fun to tell the guys{and more importantly the girls} that i built it form notihng. i admire so many of the builders on this site. my hat is off ot you guys who come up with multiple designs and the build them and they all look so great. this site influenced me to build one so thanks abunch for all you vets here.
  22. ithink you have to copy and past my link in the first post. then past it in the slot at bugmenot. i apreciate your resposes. i no it is a little bland up front ill revise it acordingly when i get a few more ideas/time.
  23. thanks. what point dont you like the one on the top left? it does go out a little bit far illl keep it in mind when i revise it.
  24. ok here is my first sketch for my first from scratch guitar. it is still abit rough but i like it so far. it shares features with the fender jagstang, and the explorer more so than any other gutars iv seen. it will be a 25.5 scale guitar with a floating tremlo, sethlover humbucker{bridge} and lace sencor mid and neck. it will be mahagany semi hollow body with a maple top. tell me what you think im sry this is the only way i no to get these pictures out my user name is craigloyer and my password is 122287. there should be pictures of my stratocaster in progress {2} and a sketch of my new one{1} thanks for anyhtoughts on it, i hope this works and i apologize if it is a hassle to see the pictures. any help on a better way to share them would be apreciated aswell. http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=2133000152
