  1. Some of those times seem a bit high to me. I am currently playing around with the machince here on campus for my Grad class and I have cut a couple templates, a guitar, and numerous other test runs in foam in addition to all the time spent on class work. The times ive experienced so far to perimeter a body in 2d in hard maple, 10 minutes and I could more then likely cut that time down. Currently I am working on a carved top bass and have set up some trial runs and to carve just the top it took roughly 17 minutes, yes all of 17 minutes. And to do a perimeter around that maybe another 2 or 3. It really doesnt take that long. The best part of use a cnc machine in my opinion is the safety factor. I am still not comfortable using a hand held router after 4 or so years of building, so ill stick to the cnc as long as I can which is until the end of May when I graduate.

knowing how much of a technical Geek Ron is ( sorry ron ..hahaa- Ron has actually built custom CNC just for kicks in the past) ...those estimates are probably very accurate down to the minute..at least for his guitars

  2. since you've covered the top i'd find someone to do a cool graphic PRS..maybe something unique and never seen on a PRS

what did you do as far as inlays on the new board { are they still birds ?? } maybe something to tie in with them

or someone recently re did their PRS to the old very valuable "Metal" model

it not an original but i think it turned out pretty cool..( you could do any color you want)

i always thought a charvel Hot Rod flame job would look wild on a PRS

maybe some flip flop flames paint??

  3. i've personally been ripped off by Ed on some guitar parts in the past..so i'm perfectly qualified to call him "the weasel" that he is...

Ed is in no way, shape or form associated with Mcnaught guitars any longer..Dave dropped him as an authorized dealer like many of the other top Builders...

Driskill, Anderson ,Melancon,Mcinturff..he trashed them all after they got out from his Exclusive dealership rights

avoid at all cost unless you want to wind up with a fake copy or imitation Mcanught

    sorry ;( back on topic

if you want any finish info talk to Dave Mansel ( he does all of Mcnaught's finishes) he may not give you the their "secret recipe" but he's been very helpful to me in the past as far as how to go about getting the fire/fllame look i was after for my first Thorn

  4. the link you may have seen is soulmate guitars

    http://www.soulmateguitars.com/Necks.htm

talk to Doug maybe he'll do a body for you also..the worst he can say is no

here's a great site of someone who uses Doug's necks and creates his own bodies..great photos that really show you how to go about doing one

click on guitar photo's for complete build of each

  5. Thanks for the support guys. I did the inlays - again not the best i've done but i wanted something a bit different. To be honest it was 'inspired' by an inlay by Ron Thorn although his is light years ahead of mine but that's the wonder of CNC and actually knowing what your doing.

    Jem :D

actually your inlay came out pretty damn good especially if by hand :D

here's Ron's "original" (in case no one's ever seen it before )

  6. i though this came out so cool. i just had to pass it along...

Ron Thorns latest " the navajo"

    particulars to take notice of

    1) Wagner pickups with all koa bobbins

    2) 3/4" inch koa top is inlaided and glued into the black limba back (not glued on top )

    3) a koa tonepros bridge and complete koa appointments ( won't find a stich of plastic on this guitar..

Not sure how Koa fits in with the whole Navajo theme but thats what the owner wanted so.....still cool regardless

  7. Retopping a Les Paul I read an interview with Billy Gibbons awhile back. He said he had  a couple of Les Pauls where they steamed the top off and then routed out a bunch of wood and put the top back on. Billy Gibbons is known to tell stories it could be true I dont know :D

i don't think thats too far fetched, i know i've heard somewhere of them using steam to loosen the glue under a fingerboard to be replaced... i quess the theory is the glue bond would melt from the steam :D

  8. Good news.  I now know exactly what I need to do to use the CNC router.  And I already put my design into AutoCAD... and it's no longer a strat design!

Thanks for the inputer guys.  I WILL post pictures of it being made on the CNC table and once the body is done etc.... final product.... but that will come in a few weeks.

Love to see pics when your done..

Man i wish i had Cad knowledge and access to CNC machine..i'd probably never have to buy another custom guitar again
