  1. Well, one of my guitars is pretty weird(Spector...). H/S/S: an On/Off switch for each pickups, a master volume, a coil split for the bridge humbucker, and a volume for the 2 single coils and one for the humbucker.

You can pretty much do anything with it.

Sounds I like (with the not so good sounding pickups that are in there...):

-Neck SC (the mid pickup alone sounds almost the exact same)

    -Bridge HB

    -Neck SC+Bridge HB

-Neck SC+Split Bridge HB (with the bridge's tone rolled off a little... Sounds like a nylon guitar when played the right way!!!)

    -Bridge Parallel (acoustic-like tone...)

Right now I'm thinking of changing the pickups... Maybe putting a twin rails in the middle...

Maybe you could try a Bridge HB+ Neck SC config? At least you would have a real single coil in the neck, and the split(or parallel) bridge mixed with the single should sound pretty convincing!!

  2. Hey! I'd just like to add some to this thread... I know it's a really old thread, but today I got to try a Babicz...

There was a show in Montreal where there were about 40 different luthiers... Well you can guess I checked them all out (some build really weird things!!) but 2 guitars really struck me there. There was a Babicz (which I REALLY had been wanting to hear for a long time), and a fanned fret acoutic...

Anyways, back to the Babicz, I have no idea why, but that thing actually works. This guitar was really alive. Sounded clear and VERY articulate! Like... I could play a chord and then stum a few strings and they would ring out really clearly.

Also, it was extremely dinamic. It didn't sound the same at ALL depending on how hard you played it and if you fingerpicked, etc. I really liked the change compared to a lot of acoustics...

Also, the neck system of his, it's really weird idea, but pretty cool. Basically, his neck is movable in a vertical direction with a single bolt, and while the strings are still on. The reason, he said, is that you can have perfect action without adjusting the saddle and stuff like that (I.E. You could use it as a slide guitar and then in 2 minutes have a regular guitar ready). It also seems that the guitar sounds very different depending on the height of the neck...

And btw, I saw a picture of the bracing he uses... There's almost none, or at least not for countering string tension (only 2 braces, actually (plus some for where the strings are anchored...))

Anyways, I just wanted to revive that thread because I was really impressed by the guy's ideas and the sound of that thing... (I was really sceptic before trying it, btw.)

  3. Oh god marshall MG... worst nightmare come true :D

At our school's talent show, 2 persons brought MG100DFX heads... They sounded EXTREMELY crappy!!! It was almost scary... My 60 watt tube amp sounded much better than anything else there...

Anyways, I haven't tryed a Line 6 amp, but I'd say they should be good for practice, but as far as stage or studio use, I'd stay far from them...

  4. I've always been wanting to try an active bartolini on a guitar... I mean... the pickup desings are basically mostly the same for guitar and bass, biggest difference being the string spacing. So, I'd love to see someone try a blade-type bass pickup on a guitar to see what the sound is like.

  5. I can see that also maybe cutting fret slots... Like Thorn does (looks like binding, but it's a CNC that does fret slots that don't do the whole width of the board)

and btw, it should be able to do inlays.

    From their website:

The CarveWright software also allows you to import and manipulate images to suit your needs, or draw out your designs using the 2D draw capabilities.
  6. Well, I tryed a 1500$ (CDN) gibson explorer at the store once... I really like the explorer shape, but playing one completely turned me off the brand/guitar...

I've recently bought an IMPORT explorer-style Hamer, 750$ CDN, and I can guarantee you it sounds and plays at least twice as good as the Gibson (came stock with SD pickups, btw...)

Now compare it to an epiphone that's about the same price... You get the idea.

Because of these type of things, I'd much rather pay 2000$ for a Parker that's full of features or a Hamer that's the exact same thing as a Gibson, but well build....

  7. Personally, I really don't think any of the 3 big compagnies (Gibson, Fender and Ibanez) really have the quality I'd expect for what you pay for their instruments...

I'd much rather go with like... Hamer, Music Man or Parker if I had the money for any non-import guitar...
