  1. The old 'you get what you pay for' comes in here. They ain't no PRS, but for the money you could do a hell of a lot worse (*coughs* fender... ahem). I still think the best value for money series is the prs SE series. Great lil axes for reasonable prices. :D

    which se do u own?

  2. Not a carcinogen as far as I know. May cause silicosis (I think that's the term) if you breathe in enough of it over time. A little accidental contact won't hurt you.

Use a dust mask if you're cutting/sanding shell... or any wood or finish for that matter.

ive heard abalone dust is deadly. i was actually trying to polish the dot inlays on my neck and a tiny bit of dust was produced. im never cutting or sanding the stuff again. was just wondering if i should go to the doctor. Also the abalone or whatever the inlay material is on my frettboard, is it safe to touch after i accidentilly took a tiny bit off( dust was produced)?

actually im pretty sure silica is a carcinogean, but to my understanding i would have to have prolonged exsposure to be effected.

  3. hi i was just wondering if there are any health concerns associated with Abalam dust. i accidentely sand a tiny bit of of the dot inlays of my frett board producing a tiny amount of Abalam dust. ive heARD abalone dust is very dangerous and has a similar effect to asbestos(carcinogean, abnormal heart rhythm). would Abalam pose the same risks. Also i assume health effects would occur as a result of prolonged esposure.

  4. Yes, everything is fine; have you ever heard of this little known guy called Stevie Ray Vaughn? His guitars had a few( :D ) scratches and dents, but they sounded just fine :D .Perhaps the strat neck would feel better with a light sanding from with high grit paper to smooth it out a bit. I take it you have chipped paint on the neck?

looks is what im concerned about. i jusat really wanna know if touching the damaged area is hazardous health wise?

  5. Personally, I'm devoutly against repairing a guitar's "character." How would you like it if someone took away your scars? Then you'd lose all of your cool conversation starters and affirmations of manliness.

so after reading what u all said my guitars are perfectly fine health wise with a few dent that chipped the wood and poses no threat to my health with everyday contact, correct? since poly sounds like some real fun to play with im just gonna leave both guitars alone, or possible just get a new neck for the strat. i can deal with the chip on the prs it doesnt effect the playability at all but the finish wear on the strat neck is kinda annoying though.

  6. Spray can poly isn't the same thing as the poly you're referring to. The hazardous "poly" is actually a two part clear coat. It's dangerous because it has cyanoacrylates in it, which is also found in super glue :D. Cyanoacrylate is a carcinogen. Although I still recomend you use a respirator when spray what you've got.

    peace,

    russ

im looking to use krylon spray can poly and acyrlic poly, so that stuff is not more dangerous then nitro? Also is spray can poly suitable for touch up work on a prs( polyester base coat followed by an acyril urethane top coat) and a fender clapton strat ( satin polyurethane)? i have both acyrlic and regular poly in a spray can both by krylon.

  7. right, so i'm finally getting round to sticking a set of 57 classics in my epi les paul, but it was said to me in here to buy and electronics upgrade kit? Can anyone say how good these are?

My neck pickup sometimes goes a little quiet and a quick mess with the toggle switch usually sorts it out, so i figure that needs replacing. Also, the one i was looking at didn't include capacitors or an input jack. should i get them too?

My main question is, should i get it done pro in a music store, or just do it myself? i'm handy enough, but i don't think i'd be able to solder the lot together.

finally, when i'm ordering my pickups, do i need to specify neck/bridge? or is it a one fits all job?

    thanks,

    bouli

lp wiring is pretty easy. u can get a prewired wiring harness on ebay if your not up to the full task. considering guitar center would charge $160 for the job i would do it myself. if u do it yourself stewmac has all the parts. what electric kit were ya looking at?

    adam

  8. cheap pickups are also bothersom. shielding is a great improvement but the pickups play a larger role i think. lace sensor are fantastic, beautfully quiet.

I also like the copper foil better than the paint. I think even aluminum foil is better than the paint. You have to put that paint on pretty thick to get a good shield with it and I hate paint anyway, so I sure as hell don't want to have to paint the INSIDE of my guitar (watch out for the hollow-bodies where they POURED shielding paint into the F-holes and moved the guitar around to get the inside of the body covered with the paint !!!

Your other best friend in guitar wiring : Star ground

I'm wondering how cheap it would be to buy copper foil without adhesive on it and just buy a can of spray adhesive. When mine runs out, I'll look into that.

i found stuff at home depot. its an aluminium tape used for heating and ac ducts. its self adhesive and like $4 for 500 feet or so. i used that to shield a guitar seem to work pretty well and was very easyto use.

  9. Hrm. Surely you must understand the difference between locking nut and saddles vs. the PRS way (just locking tuners, plus (intelligent I might add) straight string pull). Your friend might be right-- certain things about locking trems CAN be a pain!-- but that doesn't address the benefits.

Not going to get very far divebombing your PRS (sorry, MULTIPLE PRS) guitars.

I don't mean to be overly critical here, but it's clear that you're in the stage of "stars in the eyes" over a particular brand of guitar and their approach. For what it's worth, for my needs the PRS system is simply amazing and I'd put it or something similar on almost any trem-equipped guitar I'd care to make. The fact that you can afford "several" of them, and that you're convinced their system is perfect, makes me wonder what it is that you're hoping to glean from Project Guitar!

In any event, the two systems are very different, and both have their place.

    Greg

do explain. my friends ibanez with a flyod he has to have a guitar tech restring it and he mentioned that you have to cut the ends of the strings (the side with the rings) off. Also it a pain to tune. it just sounds like a pain in the ass. im not saying prs is perfect at all i was just using an example of a different solution. i honestly have no idea what the benifit of a flyod is. and i dont like the way they look with the extra crap on the trem and the locking nut.

    Adam

  10. Thx, I was forgetting about those

    They aren't officially a PRS,

    But I'll take it.

I did consider that being my first project long time ago, before I found out that Grizzly doesn't ship outside USA. I ended up with a Saga... but I have to say.. for $80US and not knowing a clue about building guitars/finishing, I thought it was a good investment.

I think the "wierd curve" looks pretty sexy and a modern edge. imo

    Speaking of Grizzly guitars,

Does anyone know (They have a Grizzly store on eBay and Amazon.com) if any of the stores ship outside the States? I know for SURE that ordering through their main site (Grizzly.com) won't let it ship anywhere else other than US.

(Here's a link to the Heirloom Kit5 on Amazon if you can't find it Link)

my friend said flyod roses are a pain, ive never had one. as some of you know from my posts ive learned alot about prs and own several. i just cant see a flyod on a prs or similar body. whats wrong with just using locking tunners that was prs solution? oh by the way a standard prs tremelo blows a strat one away.

    Adam

  11. heres a project i hate to part with, an epiphone les paul standard. has some minor blems on the headstock near the tunner holes. Also one of the pot holes on the body is cut for a 3 way switch. it includes a hardshell epiphone case and a tone pro locking bridge and tail piece( cost me $120 alone). I Will throw in some tuners as well from a prs mccarty. my asking price is $280 plus shipping but the price is flexable. if interested please pm me or contact me on aim possumad12 or on yahoo possum1284 lp pictures

  12. So what happens if someone hits the BIN on the lot and on the individual items? Huh? Whatcha gonna do?

    Sounds like fraud, InMyHumbleOpinion. :D

hadnt thought about that . good point though. i doubt that will happene though. ive sold and bought stuff from people on this fprum a couple times. im not trying to rip any one off . just trying to get rid of some stuff, really need the money. i will edit the lot auction to remedy the situation. thanks for the heads up.
