  1. You wont get much responce as there is already a tut on this....... http://www.projectguitar.com/tut/logo.htm
  2. yes but as its so cheap you may want to buy a couple of boxes just in case, I use a massize barrel which I would image is about 160g (about twice the size of whellie bin but a bit shorter) and I use the whole 750grams in it, but i just put a lid on it after that so i can keep using it.
  3. Yeah, justr go into Boots the chemist (Im assuming you have one near you) and it is in a white box(about 20cm*7cm*2cm) with blue writing, In my store its in the section with soaps and stuff, its actually a washing machine additive to help get whites whiter lol. If you cant find it just ask, i did and they led me strainght to it. BTW: It is about £2-£3 for a 750g box.
  4. If you do just 2 colors then on some test bits of wood try doing it with a red undercoat. Dont be afraid to deviat from the white. Even maybe doing an orange undercoat(light orange perhaps, to give it more of a blood feel. There are so many possibilities out there, I really dont know why people stick with the white undercoat (unless of coarse, you want to have white sections of the guitar or maybe some of the red turning pinkinsh which would also look pretty cool.) I have noew taken apart my 7-string and am taking pics as I got through each step so I can put a better tut together than with my old pics. Cant wait to get stripping/dipping. mmm yellow/green/pink.
  5. Spot on, I have emailed him to get some more bodies but am still waiting for a reply. He must be fairly busy. The GMC is a mahogany one, wanted a nice rich mellow sound.
  6. Yeah do it.... you know you want to. The npost it when its done. I must say I am very happy with the responce I have recieved here. It is really pusing me to do a second one now. I have a washburn 7-string that could do with a MC swirl...hmmmm. And gun, i will post the colour codes of the two paints i used when i get back from work. I actually also did a bit of a trick by giving the guitar a full undercoat of green before i dipped it. The green doesnt alter the properties of the black but really brings out the green as it should do. I dont like going the normal way without trying alternatives
  7. Yes you are correct, humbrol is the same as the testors/ravell type paint. I tried using the type suggested in the tutorial (Plasti Kote) but It didnt disperse/swirl in the way i wanted it to. I may try it again at some point but at the moment Im very happy with the humbrol make. I would go out spending that much on something your not sure on. I wouldnt go for it. When you consider that a tin of humbrol is about £1.50 for the larger tins, and 2 large tins (different colors) will do about 10 guitars. You would be paying a lot. Like I said i will be making a tutorial on this shortly which wil hopefully cover every angle and will take you through the swirl from start to finish with videos and stuff. But if i were you i would just get some bits of wood and some paint and borax and start practicing. I worked on swirling for a few months(a few evenings a week for about 10 dips per evening) just to get used to it and to get the feel. A lot of which could have been avoided with a more concise tutorial (but it is a good start so read it over and over again lol) . In another post of mine called 'Swirl Blobs' you can see some of the problems i came across even after a month of doing it. Maybe I was just a bit slow on the uptake. But as you can see from the final guitar i think it was worth the practice. Im goign to be doing some more and putting them on ebay to see if I can make a bit of money out of somethign I love doing. When I have done them I will be posting pics of them here aswell. Good luck with what you decide.
  8. Here are some better pics of it without the camo background lol. I put the p'ups and stuff on it to see what it would look like. I am in two minds as to whether I should sand it down and do it again because of the blotchy bit on the armrest. http://x4.putfile.com/6/16301492583.jpg
  9. Yes, the problem was that I was putting in to much paint to quickly and not letting it disperse properly, I also put more borax in the water. Seems to work. I put up pics of the guitar in another post.
  10. Well if you look closely at the front picture, at the bottom on the left (kinda where your arm rests on it) there is some paint runs. I know why this has happened and should be able to sort it out on my next swirl but it is just a bit annoying. Its just im a bit of a perfectionist and would like there to be nothing wrong anywhere. I will put up more pics later today, you will be able to see better then.
  11. I just used humbrol paints, i shall probobly be doing a tut on this shortly with pics and video of me actually doing it so people can see exactly what i did, I know I would have really like more pics and video when i was trying to learn this technique. I will put up some better pics when it has dried properly so i can do it indoors.
  12. I have been playing around with swirling for a while now and today I finally had the nuts to do the dip. This is my first one and I am about 70% happy with the outcome. I will be getting some more bodies and doing some differant color swirls. This one has a few imperfections which could have come out better. But I am fairly happy as its better than I though it would turn out. What do you guys think? http://x4.putfile.com/6/16107135219.jpg
  13. I think i have finally cracked it!!! Gonna be dipping the guitar probobly today. This is the results of nearly 2 months of pratice dipping and testing.
  14. I put in about 350grams per 80 litres, something like that, I was also thinking this may be the problem and I will be putting in a bit more when the weather here getts a bit better.
  15. Im using Humbrol Model Paint which is the same as testors i think. I didnt get on with the plasticote stuff. Im putting in the black and waiting for it to dissapate (about 30 secs) then pouring the lighter colors and waiting a bit more untill they seem to stop spreading. they i use some cocktail sticks to swirl it. I then dip after about a min or so to make sure its spread properly. The first dip is usually the worst and by the third dip its not to bad.(most of the pics are third dips).
  16. I have been doing lots of practice swirling on bits of wood and apart from the water beading i am having one other problem, the paint doesnt seem to be dissipating evenly over the water causing blobs of paint here and there, the lighter paints seem to dissapate easier then the darker ones. is there any reason for this? You can see in the pictures below the blobbing i am talking about. Would it go away with less paint or more borax, perhaps i am not waiting long enough between adding the black and then adding colors in. That is why I was asking about differant colors dissapating in differant ways. The greens (especially the lighter/brighter ones) seem to dissapate very easily. They also seem to 'hog' the surface area which is possibly why the black is blobbing. Has anyone else come accross any of this at all?
  17. There are loads of people on e bay that sell them fairly cheap.
  18. I would imagine it would be fine, as long as you make sure the screw holes are covered so water does not get into them, as for base coat colors you can use anything really but remember it will have an effect on any other colors, Im doing a GMC swirld and have given the body a green base coat as I dont want any white showing through if paint doesnt stick. The green base wont affeft the black as you can imagine. but it you were to do a dna kinda thing then you couldnt really put a red base on it because the red would discolor the yellows and other colors. This has been talked about elsewhere, Its really up to you, I would just do a lot of testing to see how differant base colors affect the top colors.
  19. I would imagine that you could spray a coat of laquer, and while its sticll sticky put some glitter on and keep adding glitter with each laquer clearcoat until you have built up the glitter effect you want.
  20. They are only about 250ml bottles, they were about £2.50 from B&Q, I will try testors paint I think. All the posts on here say to use that even thought the tut says otherwise. Looking forward to the pics
  21. If you dont mind me asking what paints did you use? Ive been trying to do it with the plasticoat mentioned in the tut but its fairly expensive to practice with when you get such a small pot of the stuff. Also did you put the black in first then green or both at the same time? When i put the black in and wait for it to disperse and then add the grren the black kinda runs away from the green, its really annoying, I though it may have something to do with the paint. Put up pics asap, It would be great to see pics from someone who has done what I am trying to do.
  22. Does anyone here actually know/has done guitar swirls? I have tried to follow the tut on here but its not very descriptive and doesnt seem to work very well, i have tried more/less borax in the water and more/less paint to try and get the right swirl. I have tried putting the paint in first and dunking, and dunking then putting the paint on and pulling it through etc... I have tried everything i can think of, if anyone has done it could you gimme an idea of how to do it? This is driving me crazy. What kind of paints do you use? I have tried the ones suggested but they dont seem to do the trick? Any help would be fantastic. Thanks in advance to any replies...
