  1. I have to thank all of you for this. I am gearing up for my first guitar. To date I have done repairs and modifications but never an entire guitar. I am sure I will make many of the same mistakes but hopefully not all of them on the same guitar. When I do make them I will feel just a bit less stupid knowing that people whos work I admire have made the same mistakes.

  2. I have worked in the hazardous waste cleanup business for over twenty years, including as a safety instrutor. While you do have the correct filters/catridges,

IF YOU HAVE HEALTH PROBLEMS YOU SHOULD NOT USE A RESPIRATOR WITHOUT AN OK FROM YOUR DOCTOR FIRST.

Sorry about shouting but respirators make it harder to breathe and can trigger athsma attacks and even heart attacks. If you have had bypass surgery I doubt that it is safe for you to use a respirator. Check with your doctor. You can always use oil finishes or get someone else to do your finishes for you.

BTW Full face do not provide greater protection to you lungs. They just integrate eye protection into the same unit.

  3. I can't believe I got any votes at all with this line up.

It's gotta be the novelty of the guitar and certainly not the build quality that gets them votes - this month and months prior. .......

but I never vote for myself and I do appreciate the votes I get - be they pity votes or not. :D

That said - there is no way on earth that the Zulu is a better guitar than Not You's entry.

This month I started off confident but all hope is gone after seeing the other entries.

Lots of head turners and oddities this go 'round.

Ok with that I think you should know why I voted for you.

    1) I like that you are using found materials. It gives so many possibilites and chalanges that you would not face if you were using fresh wood.

    2) You made great use of the carve. I like that it is on the back and thus there but, literaly, not in your face.

    3) Related to the first point, the way you met the chalange of the control cavity is great.

    4) I just like explorers

That said it was hard not voting for any of the others.

  4. As a fan of the Electra/Westone line of guitars and basses I have not lost faith in you build. I just have not had anything to add.

I have a Westone bass neck that I intend to start my efforts at building with. Go for it.

BTW what is wrong with the paint job and where were you in the 80"s :D

  5. I have an Electra Workingman (hense my moniker). It has a standard two humbucker with 2T, 2V and a three way switch. The bridge pup cuts out fairly frequently when switching and sometimes when playing. I have replaced the switch and reflowed the solder on all the pionts but it still happens. The other day while I was adjusting the volume pot it momentarly cut out (usualy when it cuts out it stays cut out for a while). It is possible I have a bad pot? If so how would I test it or should I just replace it? Many thanks in advance.

  6. I think there would be a few advantages to going with the inserts over gluing. 1) You have already had this neck on a few guitars so you could move it again. 2) It would be easier to modify the neck to body fit if required (e.g., shimming it). Also, I am not sure how mutch your glueing this one would give you the experiance of a set neck. Set necks are constructed diffently and also typicaly give you better upper fret access. This is not to say it would not work.

  7. I went for right for the following reasons. The slightly smaller upper bout would make for better upper fret access. The deeper waste will make it more stable when playing in the classical position. I like the look as it is a bit retro. I have a 1920's Spanish classical that has close to the same. The wood and finish would make a differrence though. If you are using unusual wood or finish I would go for the left.

  8. You have a few potential issues. It may be the picture but the nut at the G string looks funky. Is it sitting properly? When you say it is buzzing, where? A bit of relief is normal but you may need more or less. What you do neeed is a good setup. There are several online resources for how to do a set up. I like the info at frets.com. If you don't feel up to it, take it to a good tech. As far as the truss rod goes, do not try and force it. Give the nut a good cleaning with natha if it is at all dirty and then put a small amount of penatrating oil on it. Let it sit for at least an hour and gently try to remove the nut. When you get it off clean it and the threads thoughly with naptha; lubercate it with teflon greese and replace the nut. Then follow your sertup instructions.
