  1. Don't know about the neck joint, but the axe itself looks to be pretty dinged up. Might tell you something about how it's been treated. And yeah, he should have posted a picture of the laquer crack for you. I'd pass.
  2. Grizzly Heritage kits:Here? Hope linking is OKAY... I'm with you, I'm a much greater lover of the guitar than my ability shows. I love how it feels, looks and sounds. I'm building one just to do it. I want one the way I want it, not from a factory, and when it's done I'll have a real heirloom. Well, actually the second one will be mine, my son's getting the first one.
  3. Let's talk about how your first guitar came out. Good bad or so so. A luthier I met about twenty years ago told me that you'll build ten before you build one that's playable. That kept me from cuttong wood for a long time. After doing a bt of research, I see that a lot of people have built very nice instruments their first time out. Good or bad, let's hear your story. Me? Mine's in the "In progress" thread, and it's going pretty well, but I'm not at a stage where any real precision is required.
  4. Really nice looking work. I'll be following this because I want to put together an archtop one day. Keep he pictures coming!
  5. I mean angling a headstock with six tuners on one side back at a 13 degree angle. I see that a lot on the three and three headstocks, but I'm not sure about the one above.
  6. Couple of quick pictures of the rough neck blank straight outta' the planer. (Camera Phone pix, sorry.) Came out pretty nice on one side, just a little clean-up to do. This side has a shitload of chatter, but it's flatter. The glue joint could be a little tighter in a few spots, but this photo doesn't show it. If I use this side, dould it make a drastically poor joint? I know nothing has to be perfect, but qill the neck split once I put tension on it with strings? I'll post better pictures once I get to the camera. I hope it'll work, because that's all the money and wood I have for now. I'm really impressed with this headstock design: I should be able to angle a six on a side back, right? One last question. Anyone ever cut their scarf joint with a miter saw?
  7. Looks great! You're right in putting the jack on front of the body. I have a JEM style jack and it just doesn't make sense. The plug is in the way and makes me have to change positions when sitting, and the cord gets bent hard right at the jack because of the way it gets positioned. The one I'm making will be front mounted as well.
  8. I bought one and my only complaint is that the screws that came with the router table stripped the first time I tried to take out my router. (The table only takes Ryobi routers, another downside) It was a big pain. They also don't send basic mirer slides. That aside, it's been a great saw. I've rehabbed my house with it and it's a workhorse. If it burned up I might buy a heavier duty saw altogether, but I like this one a lot.
  9. Dude, that is WAY nicer than my setup at the moment. But I'm moving ina few months and putting a shop in the basement, which is going to be SO cool. Looks good to me, bro.
  10. NICE carve job and sweet bridge. I love V variations because they look so aggressive. Can't wait to cee more.
  11. Yeah, I'm cutting the AANJ soon. I think it'll make the whole thing come together also. Thanks for the comliment on the laminate, I think it'll come out pretty nice when it's done. Then I'll have to band saw it and to the scarf joint. I'll post some pictures of my tools to give you an idea what I'm working with. It's a great inspiration and confidence builder for me to see what some builders do with simple hand tools. My band saw's really sad, my scroll saw I can't speak for since I just bought it from a garae sale for 20 bucks, and I have a few other decent ones. From what I can see, more than enough to get this done if I work carefully. I'm considering using old electronics from my cheap Ibanez. My son's nine and I plan to give it to him, so if he learns to play and it's a good guitar, I'll put in some better guts. I'm thinking a bridge humbucker and a neck single coil. Also have to design a headstock, which is a huge deal for me. On with the show!!
  12. It's all beautiful, but I like the Strat the best. What a beautiful guitar! And yellow pine!! I just had someone get sarcastic with me agout my flat fretboard question and he said that it's like asking if I could make a guitar from pine. Well now U guess I can!! An inspiration as usual, Hyunsu.
  13. Thank you thank you thank you!!!! I'm always looking for inexpensive ways to get things done and this looks like a winner. Dig it, Jay5.
  14. Quick note:photo album. I'll update it soon.
  15. Really nice! We need the details about how you're doing it. Hey, why does everybody else's stuff look so much better than mine?
  16. No my friend, the guitar is "wonky", or rather it was. I sawed off the knob at the back and am going to cut an AANJ soon. Also, the block end was sawed WAY out of the template (I didn't cut it out) so the layout would have worked, but it doesn't show in the pictires. I think this is what you mean, crooked block end and the need to move the bridge. But it's a bit wider than it looks and at present the butt end knobby thing is gone so it doesn't visually give the impression of being "off". It would actually look fine when finished but I just decided I didn't like it. There's enough width at the top to pass everything through easily, and with the AANJ everything will line up nicely. *crossing fingers*. It has done so in rough layouts. That said, it'll be a miracle if thing plays one decent note when it's done. But that's what first guitars are for, learning. I'm not being careless, just inexperienced and learning the tools. And I'm having a lot of fun.
  17. Got the neck out of the clamps and am looking it over. It's nice and tight but now my question is how to square it up. I have no jointer but do have a block plane and a table saw as well as a router and table. Any suggestions how to square it up correctly? The outsite edges are factory. It's also pretty thick, so I need to trim it up. I'm going to glue up a shorter set of scraps to create the scarf joint next so that's it for now. I almost got my hands on a jointer for dirt cheap last night but I can't afford it because I'm moving onto a new pad soon. Stupid priorities.
  18. It's certainly helpful and I thank you. I also cruised some of the forum's photos and found a couple of great pictures. Hyunsu's great posts have been a real inspiration. Stay tuned.
  19. Hey man, That's the coolest guitar body design EVER. E-VER!! Congratulations.
  20. Thanks Marzocchi, It's nice to hear a little praise, since I'm doing this on my own and I always feel like it's going to be a piece of garbage. It's turning out better than I'd expected to be honest and the learning experience is already irreplacable. Anyone have good advice about gluing the scarf joint? I'm at a loss as to how to clamp it. I did a bit of looking and decided I was wrong earlier. My scarf joint can be just about anywhere, but I do need one. Help me, somebody, with the clamping and gluing.
  21. Just glued up the neck last night. Split a piece of Maple and sandwiched a hunk of Padauk betweek them. The Padauk was bought perfectly flat, the Maple was too, so after splitting the Maple I used the factory edges for gluing. Sanded them up a bit to create roughness for the glue to stick to and applied every clamp that would fit. I used Elmer's version of Gorilla glue so I'll let you know what I think of it. Pictures of it in clamps below. Nice burn marks from the saw, huh? Nothing like a dull blade. I'll leave the clamps on for 24 hours and draw in the profile. What do you guys and girls think of the layering? I think it'll look pretty cool. Next question- I can either make the fingerboard from Maple or Padauk. I'm leaning toward Maple, but I have more Padauk and it might be easier to get right. Anyone?
  22. Whoa!!! whoawhoa... Everybody breathe deep. Nice. I really wasn't offended by the "Pine" comment so it's no big deal. For any of you that are interested, I'll post the work in progress on the thread I started in the "Work In Progress" forum. Thanks for the help. And please switch to decaf?
  23. Hmmm. Anyone ever play a flat electric fingerboard?
