  1. One more for the bandwagon, wet sand then buff, it is worth the extra work! I do start with 1500 then 2000.
  2. An experienced builder that knows how to manage his time AND has the funds to work on several at a time can generate 5-10 per month in spare time. But like the other posts say, learn the craft, build it cause you love it, then worry about production and income once you have a reputation as a quality builder.
  3. This is the first guitar project I've posted on the site. We used to make custom guitars "back in the day" and have recently started back up (now that we can afford tools). This is Bridget, she is a semi hollow body made from 35 yr old Ash (wouldn't have been my first choice but the grain on this is wonderful). Soon she will have a three tone sunburst, then clear coated. 8 strings (low E and A have octaves like a 12 string). Let me know what you guys think! Pic2
  4. Heat gun should work, just make sure you don't keep the heat on one area too long. I'm refinishing a pre-lawsuit Ibanez Les Paul right now. I was hoping the wood underneath would be nice but it looks like there are a couple of patches in noticable areas...
  5. Yep, I would stay away from pine too. If you want a cheaper wood try poplar, still would not be my first choice of wood but it has decent sound qualities. That way you don't invest too much cash while learning your skills.
  6. an old maple tele? is it a fender? Anyway, you want to get the finish even, if soem areas are bare and some sealed, you may notice a difference when refinished you have many options, I would continue to sand through the sealer, then stain. If you are looking for a clear coat you can spray lacquer and buff (See finishing tutorials) or finish with a tung oil. For the SG, if you want the grain to show through, stay away from paint. Stain it then seal it or lacquer. I read somewhere how Gibson got the deep reddish brown look for many SG's but I can't remember where I saw it.
  7. Ours (DGM) are still 100% handmade! Our website will be completed soon and I will post links. Currently we are building a Bass out of some Beautiful wenge with a wenge neck and black hardware, wow this is killer grain, and a semi-hollow 8 string guitar out of 35 year old ash which will have a natural to red burst. The bass is nearing the final finishing and the guitar is approaching final sanding. If interested I can send pics. Thanks Terry D.
