  1. I have built two instruments with oak necks and fretboards, it will wanna chip if you start carving (i did trapezoid inlays) but it looks awesome with a stain on it.
  2. can i get diagrams haha? i'm just wanting input on the desired layout of the neck/truss rod/body joins
  3. @ripthorn i was never sure how far i should go with the length of the truss rod but i figured it should atleast be able to effect the carved portion of the neck, having the block ends in the heel and at the nut. I dont really want a single action rod lol
  4. ahh but that is too long for what i'm planning. 22 and 24 inch truss rods start poking into where my pickups should be
  5. I'm planning a sg build with a 27" scale, joining at the 20th fret (25.5" scale at 1st fret so this is 19th fret like a sg special). I was planning to have the truss rod go the full length of the fretboard but to do that i need about 20.5 inches. where can i find a rod of this length for a 3/8" channel?
  6. this ? EBAY! I got one to use on a jaguar i am building for my friend
  7. can you show the fretting process on this? i've got a neck thru bass i am building and didnt think to get the fretting done before attaching the wings.
  8. Looks pretty cool. you using some of Toone's aluminum bar in the neck?
  9. I have myself an 18'' 4mm allen nut HOTROD truss rod from stew mac and am not sure how to install it. now clearly i know it's gotta have a channel for it to sit in but after that i'm not sure. do i need to secure it in place(glue?)? I have a limited amount of tools but i do have a a router and a couple bits so what is the best way to make this slot?
  10. My friend asked me to build him a Jaguar. It is going to be a neck thru with an angled headstock. The neck will be oak aspen oak aspen oak with a stewmac 18'' hotrod truss rod. I'll use aspen to build the wings. I've started to make templates and even got a pretty solid design for my own headstock with a bit of that fender flair (as per request). It'll be an HH config. I'll probably end up cutting my own plastics. Its getting a tune-o-matic bridge (not sure if it'll have a tremolo) so I designed it with about a three degree tilt (similar to a 65 sg if i am correct). Body will be at most 1.5 inches thick. black body whith probably just a cleared neck. Pics later, hopefully i can start working on the neck tonight!
  11. I'm about to start a new build, a neck thru jaguar. I've been drawing out some blueprints for it and am almost ready to start building. I've never build a guitar neck before so i'm not entirely sure what i'm doing for the truss rod. What's a good brand to go with? If i can get one 1/4 inch wide I can cut the slot into the middle 1/4 laminate in the neck. Is it to be cut with a uniform depth or is the bottom of the pocket dip down closer to the back of the neck?
  12. http://www.ricktoone.com/2010/04/partial-fret-bass.html tick toone did a partial fret. he had a 'taller' fretboard past where he stopped the frets.
  13. Awesome bass. I was thinking of doing something similar for the truss rod route. How thick is that fretboard? do you get decent string height with that setup?
  14. is there a truss rod in there at all? and arent we looking for a straight neck anyways(no bow)?
  15. awesome stuff. can't wait to see it finished.
  16. Does anyone have any good reference pics or cad or blueprints for a hofner violin bass?
  17. I think I'll take another look at what I've got going on. From what I've seen from images of jags is that they've got none of minimal angle going for them. I'll look to see where the strings fall. I don't mind the look of a recessed tom and if anything It shouldn't be sitting too far down either. I COULD cut the angle into the face of the neck (under the fretboard) and add a piece to support the end of the fretboard on the top of the guitar. I think it would work but I am still hesitant because of what is required.
  18. Oh ok. I will keep this in mind. now if i did an angle, what would you suggest? and with that, what would you suggest for the angle of the headstock?
  19. yes, tenon. Why did you hate you guitar in which you recessed the bridge?
  20. However it will mean I need a taller block of wood to cut the core from. Right now, I am planning on laminating 3-4 strips measuring 1.5 inch tall getting me a 1.5 inch thick body. If my planning is correct, the amount of cutting should be minimized to what I can do with the tools at hand.
  21. Ok so i recess my tom and I can avoid having to angle the neck. Now would I need an exact depth for the recess? I figure I can find an approx. height from a full scale drawing and perhaps add an 1/8 inch to allow room for adjustment, also assuming that my heigh adjustment screws will not be bottomed out for proper adjustment on the total bridge height. bridge is about 9mm from lowest point to bottom of highest saddle. I should have about 6.5mm from face of guitar/bottom of fretboard to top of frets.
