  1. Hey, I dont really post on here in this section because I dont do a whole lot with acoustics. That said, I was at practice and the band was working on a memorial song and they coyly looked at me and said, "YOu don't happen to have an acoustic?" Uh, no. Well I headed on over to Musicians friend, Guitar Center, and a buddy's shop for a look. I dont see a thing I like. Well, since I built a few solid bodys, any advice on building an acoustic bass. I was thinking something with bloodwood or some other exotic species.
  2. Yeah, thats what I said alright as I was wrapping up my latest repair job. I just got a replacement tuner in the mail from StewMac and was in the process of adding it on the bass. I noticed that I had an extra string hanging off and looked closer at it. One of the OTHER tuners just broke. AW DAMMIT! Has anyone else ever had to rebuild a tuner at the last minute?
  3. I agree. I have a fretless bass and I thought it was cool until I realized that I no longer knew where half the notes were. And you have to be spot on or else it sounds off. Its good if you do a lot of sliding.
  4. Just make it look like your getting into your music. Stomp, throw your body in to it, look pissed. I used to headbang alot and now, due to concussions I can't because I start to lose consiousness. Or maybe that could be your schtick. "Dude! That guy is so metal, he headbanged 'til he passed out!"
  5. Perhaps if the body hadnt already been routed and drilled i.e A blank. IF the scale of a neck is say 24.75 and the body is 25.5 then the intonation is horribly off. Even if it was 1/8 inch off, when you pluck an "e#" it will not sound like and "e#" The scale of a neck is more referred to the distance from the nut to 12th fret x 2. If the distance was 17 inches, then its a 34 inch scale and the distance from the nut to saddle is 34 inches. Man I wish I had that old pic of the guitar scale defined. Both sound fantastic to me ::EDIT:: You could write him back, and tell him that you're Ed Roman and that the interchangable scale guitar is your patented design, and force him to remove it from his auctions. HAHAHHAHA! Thats awesome!
  6. Write ebay and tell them this guy is making fraudulent claims. Or you could write him back, tell him you are a 20+ veteran luthier and he is making fradulent claims.
  7. I am not worried about the whole IRS deal since my accountant has been informed and he said he can put it all on my own personal taxes. Apparently unless I make over four figures or whatever on this, I shouldnt even think about it. I looked into those other places Jay5, I think I'll stick with StewMac at the moment since if all I need is a screw, I can order a screw and not have to spend another $10 to reach their minimum order limit. Unless there is something I dont know about them. I have since decided to go the itemized invoice route and I even have various details to prevent certain BS from happening.
  8. Dang. Been there. If you were in MN, I'd say lets hook up a new band. "Remember when your cat Snowball died? Remember? Why don't we go down to the pound and get you a new jazz man." -Homer
  9. Well, I go through Stew Mac at the moment. I am just trying to figure out if I should charge cost for the parts and then ramp them up a little down the line. One of the people I talked to about this business suggested tht when I am doing the invoice, I should just put in a generic "Guitar Parts" line on there and then not tell them what I charged for parts individually.
  10. If you have a drill press or access to one, you should be able to just drill the whole thing out. Then plug the hole with a toothpick drenched in woodglue. After a day, sand that baby flat and drill a new pilot hole.

  12. Okay, SO I had been doing guitar repair for friends and aquaintences for a little over two years now. Right? One day someone says I should throw together a business card and hand it off for fun and profit. So for a little over a year, I've been handing them out and not receiving ONE SINGLE phone call. I practically give up and set aside my guitar projects and allow some needed RNR. Pretty much I done squat for a few months. Out of the blue, my phone rings and its a pawn shop in the area asking if I can do guitar repairs. I modestly say I do some work. They tell me I was now their guitar repair guy and to swing by in the morning. Get this, the work is mostly buying things off Stewmac and replacing the broken pieces. I put together and invoice template and started an expense/income fold. AM I MISSING ANYTHING? Anyone with similar experience have any pointers?
  13. I dunno, you could always wait and see how it turns out. I picked up a copy on ebay a few months back and it was surprisingly close enough to give away as a gift to a bud of mine. It sounded even better once I upgraded the pickups to genuine Epiphones. See what you get and if you feel ripped off, contact paypal. I dont know if ebay will do much especially if you got the item outside and official transaction.
  14. Well, the new band isnt a thrash metal band, which I'm fine with. They had a bassist and a comprehensive professionally recorded demo. The bassist bailed and they called me since I used to work with their singer. Its less stressful since these guys are way more organized and a lot more laid back about their approach. All I had to do was learn all the old parts off the demo. Basically I left Fear Factory/Slayer/Pantera for Incubus/Pink Floyd/Aerosmith. Mickguard, I totally hear where your at. I told my guitarist that every band is destined to break up...He now has a different approach on the subject.
  15. In case anyone ever cared...The band has gone into completely sucking the life out of everything. Basically, I shoulda put the dog to sleep when I sensed a problem. Long story short, we got a thorough set down and began to work on everything with the notion to just perfect everything and do an open mic night (I was scouting locations). The drummer announced, initially, that he wasn't going to be able to play anymore because his other band was playing the Warped Tour and whatnot. We discussed mutual dissolution at that point. The drummer revised his story a few times mentioning that he could still play. Band went on to hiatus. I get tapped to play in another band (who actually gigs) I oblige. Band gets back together and, unbeknownst to me, talks about replacing me. The guitarist is my bud and he shoots it down. Overall, the whole situation has changed and I have pretty much told my bud that I wasn't coming back and to kill it; nothing good will come of it. We can recycle all the material into a reversion of the band dubbed "Roshambo" and have a real band going for once. Aye. Some days it just doesnt pay to be a musician. Thanks for letting me vent.
  16. I went out and bought myself a Furman and it noticably cleaned up my sound since. Most troubling is that the slap/snap sound is still present. I can turn down my rig and that thwarts it, but it sucks especially if I come across as too quiet. Oh, well. I guess the bass is indeed Axe Almighty.
  17. I was jamming out with my friends band in his basement the other night. During the intermissory parts I slapped my hand against my fret board to mute my tone and there was this incredible snap that came through my 115. I tried it again and got the same result. It was like the sound of jacking into it with the volume cranked. My guitarist told me that it was likely that the power was horrible and I was going to need a (you guessed it) conditioner. So, I've been looking at some of the Furman M series. ANyone have a clue if this is what I need?
  18. I have to say, I own one and it is the sweetest sounding and most amazing basses for the buck! This is my first sixer and I honestly cant think of much of a reason to hang on to my 5 stringers. Hope this helps anyone who is chewing their lip on this one. Dude, why are you ditching this axe? Are you planning of tearing up your Brotherhood of Bassists card?
  19. Look at the picture closely and tell me its not similar. Plus, if you have to have it, the guy also sells 1 ton. I would rather take my chance on a 1/2 ton than run the probability of damaging a fretboard with a 1 ton.
  20. Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. I have my dads drill press to utilize for the drilling out. I am combining this project with the plans from Jay 5's fret press caul. That way I can stick it to Stewmac. I will also be adapting those plans to build versions of Stewmac's other fretting jigs.
  21. Hey I found a guy who regularly sell arbor presses on ebay for under $20! These are the same 1/2 ton ones that Stewmac sells for over $100. Check him out, I got mine on the way.
  22. Hmm, I thought you could vote more than once...my "poll" was put together very late in the morning, my apologies.
  23. Hey all, I've seen a lot of people who do a TON of work on this site and was wondering where everyone gets their parts, woods, tools, and other staples of our shared disorder. While woods can come from any number of sources, the more crucial supplies usually all come from the same place. Namely if you can score a sweet deal somewhere, help out and share the wealth! Personally, I can't think of any others but if something isnt up there, just say it here. Mind you, obviously this isnt all inclusive.
