  1. I'll take the dud out of your hands I've never heard of anyone who didn't like this. Check that the wiring is correct? Seems like you could have an output problem. Play it unplugged too and see how it resonates naturally. It has a Poplar body but I don't know much about this wood I have a model 4 and it's one of the most resonating, well built guitar I've ever played (though of course it's not like I played that many). Those Charvel model series are amazing bang for the bucks, it'd be sad if you got a dud.
  2. I'll probably just buy what I can afford to buy and what I'd feel comfortable and safe using. I'd probably use it a lot at first to **** up as much as I can while learning and then once or twice for the 'real' projects anyway Ahhh D'OH! I found the link that didn't work has been reposted. Me and my big mouth, I should have looked more first. Thanks for all the help!
  3. Nah I knew it'd be expensive don't worry, I'm not that much of a n00b I just had a big misconceptions about tool prices it seems. A router seems to be under 100 bucks. I thought they'd be way more than that. I'll have a better look at prices. I was just way out of it, sorry about that hehe... Any special sizes I should need, or sizes to avoid and such? I know just about nothing about it all.
  4. Damn... That's a lot of money for a student... Are there cheap alternatives or just cheap versions of the tools you mentioned? I did check the thread pinned. The first link on it doesn't work though. I guess a decent bandsaw would be about 200 bucks, a router maybe 500? drillpress... eh no idea about that, but shouldn't be too expensive I guess.
  5. Alright that goes in my list too. Thanks! ARGHH 40 euros for a DVD, I'll see that one hurt my bank account... I'll wait a bit
  6. Well I have his 2 books already and there's a 100 pages book coming with the fretting kit. You think the DVD is still worth it with all that? Is is that good?
  7. DUH! Clamps! Thanks! *takes notes* About 5 would be ok for a fretboard? Maybe I'd need 2 or 3 more for a neck later. How much are clamps usually? (yeah I'm that cheap...)
  8. You're the man who designed the Tremolno! Well you probably hear it a lot of times, but that's just a great idea. I can't wait until it's sold so I can recycle the little block of wood that blocks my old trem. I mean come on, it blocks a trem, unblocks it, AND it opens beers. This is the metal player's best friend!
  9. Well as you guessed, I want to get started with building guitars and some of its components. The first try I will do will be a 16" radius maple fingerboard. Then I'll try and build my own neck without inlays, and then hopefully a bound, inlayed neck. I am also planning on getting started on fretting as son as I can. So I was thinking of buying: Stew Mac's fretting kit One of Stew Mac's radiused maple fretboard a 16" and a 12" radius block (for later one when I will want to do compound radius frets (mhmm duh) Wood glue Right now, what matters is what I'd need for the first project only, but I'm also looking for suggestions on what I'd need to build my own neck. If you can think of any tools I may need aside from those I mentioned, I'd be more than happy Thanks!
  10. Nah I'm in Amsterdam for now. I'll get back there during the first or 2nd week of September. There's the art festival going on there right?
  11. Yeah I really want a model 6 too. A bit out of any guitar budget, projects aside, that I have in mind for now though. But in time, it'll happen
  12. Yeah the air makes me 'fly away' from the guitar
  13. Well I'm new here, and as the saying goes 'tell me your gear and I shall tell you who you are' So I have a cobalt blue Charvel model 4 (1988). The bridge pickup has been replacded by a Seymour Duncan Full Shred. I got the TB version, and the Floyd on this guitar (Jackson JT6) has standard spacing... Go figure eh It still sounds absolutely amazing though. The guitar has a thin (not Wizard thin) neck which has a very comfortable profile, but is also quite wide. I really love the way it plays, and I believe I did a decent set up on it. The buzz is minimum and the action very low. She keeps me happy I've blocked the Floyd too. She truly is an amazing player, and looker. Now the rebel child is a model 1a... Also a 1988. The guitar has a loose truss rod. Not at the nut, but inside the body. So my first real 'project guitar' action will be to take the fingerboard off and see if I can make the truss rod fit a little tighter inside. I'll also need a new fingerboard for it (ideally: birdseyes maple, without inlays... yum) but I can't seem to find a place where to buy preslotted (25.5 scale), all maple 22 frets with 10/16 or 12/16 radius. So it seems that I may just build my own. Oh and also, the necks aren't Fender compatible, the heel is a little larger, as to make things easier. I got a model 4 neck that I'll put on her, but it needs hardware. I should receive it in a week or so. I also have a Bill Lawrence 450L rails pickup that will go in the bridge, but most likely in the middle position of the model 4 until I get the replacement neck. Here is a picture of the sisters: Pretty eh? Right now in Amsterdam I use a POD 2.0 through my hi fi. In Edinburgh I have a Peavey Envoy 40 watter SS amp which does the trick. I also have a Laney AOR 30 watts all tube amp in the mail, it should have arrived last Wednesday, I'm a bit worried. But well, wait and see... I use Fender mediums or Dunlop .60 picks (though I think I'll get back to .73), as well as D'addario XL .11s. Playing style, well just imagin: Zakk Wylde at 19 years old, he can't play anything but metal riffs with LOADS of pinch harmonics. That's about me. I can't really solo or play leads (I'm still beginning ) but I sure can pinch, so I do it. Only thing I'm confident about... I've never had lessons so I progress all I can, I find it a bit hard to concentrate sometimes. Anyway enough about me: any Charvel imports fans here?
  14. Well hey everyone! My name is Pierre, I'm French, I live in the Netherlands and I'm studying in Edinburgh (err... if that makes sense ) I've been on the main section of this site for a bit, browsing the tutorials and silently learning from it. I've been playing guitar since February so I'm a noob, but I already know I want to get tech abilities. I set up my own guitars, wiring, etc and I've done so with friends' as well. I just love woods, guitars (er... electric mostly) and everything that concerns them. I'll very soon order Stew Mac's refretting kit and work on that and a spare neck I'm getting, that's one more step forward to make guitars play great. I own 2 guitars (yeah, early for that isn't it? I just love the things too much it seems). A Charvel model 4 and a Charvel model 1a. Both are 1988. Too bad I was born in 1986, but eh now I know what to buy next, a model 6 from 1986 (a logical upgrade from the model 4). I became interested in tech stuff ever since I adjusted the neck of the model 4 (which was flat...) and achieved a tiny bit of relief, a 1mm action (no more, no less) and absolutely no buzz. If only all guitars could be like this eh? Well at least for us who like a low action! The model 1a has a loose truss rod inside the neck, so I've just gotten it ready to take its fingerboard off. Then I'll need to find a new all maple, non inlayed fingerboard and stick it there, but it's hard to find any. I'll probably make another thread about this later on. Well, 19, been playing guitar for a few months only... I guess you can say I'm ambitious. I just think I've finally found something that I just love doing. Oh I've also been playing drums for 4 years, but don't hold that against me Well you're welcome to ask me questions, or tell me if you're from either of the 3 countries I'm from I'm looking forward to post here and help with my modest knowledge (and big mouth)
