  1. alright well im a little saddened by how the rear panel came out. i killed the original and had to make a new one, and because it was originally done by hand it wasnt perfect. so trying to make something match something else thats not perfect ended up hard. i managed to get most of the issues with filler, but the top left is a bit of a gap. still unsure what im going to do about it. may just say screw it. the filler looks like hell in the pic, but it will be painted over. planning the layout this is how i did the slot last time. xacto knife to cut a small piece out, then an old broken jigsaw blade
  2. well, i just found that my 5 way switch didnt come with screws. and realized they wouldnt have been gold anyways.. soooo i guess im going to have to follow with my pickups and go screwless on the pickup switch =D almost got it all figured out.
  3. Yeah, I'm not even halfway done with my first and I'm already planning like three more I keep telling myself to wait until I finish one and can play it for a bit to see what I would do differently etc. But every time I go to the wood store I start daydreaming... exactly. i havent really touched my first build since i finished it except a few times. i have no idea what to do with it! i dont want to sell it (wouldnt make much anyways) but i hate that its just gonna sit....
  4. smart a$$ haha its the same as the 2 im doing now - one more poplar body blank, and enough 1/4" sitka spruce to make 80 guitars
  5. yeah i should have had a notepad during my first build to write down what NOT to do on my next build... plenty of learning in that regard
  6. ah, yeah for humbuckers that would work. and actually that flush cut bit i just bought is just a HAIR bigger than a single coil route. if did what youre saying and made sure i cut straigh, i could maybe get a good template from it. ill have to mess around with it... for the next build. unfortunately my other build right now is 2 p90s lol, so i could do what you do for the humbuckers. i have wood for a third build but cant decide what to do with it yet...
  7. but... but... i liked the grains lol. that sucks man... but you will be happy with it in the end, it will all be worth it! and youll know better next time
  8. i think the only things i would use a template for though are pickup cavities and neck pocket maybe one day ill take the time... lol
  9. actually, i drew it up for a guy to use, so its not theoretical lol but if you add a single coil with phase reversal so its HHS, and series parallel.... hmmm XD
  10. yeah the plastic base on mine had one little lump that left a mark. i just took a razor and scraped it flush so its all good now. but a screw youd have to take out and grind, sad day! now if only i had templates..
  11. no kidding. id be in the middle of gigging and be like "hold on a sec!" *flips switches, strums once* "nope, hold on" *flips a few more, strums again* "crap, i cant remember what sound i wanted... youll have to wait a minute while i...!" "stupid users manual..."
  12. ohhhh its a very good sign! Im shocked, 100% shocked at the difference in these 2 routers. the battery powered one, even at full charge could barely cut wood with even a small bit, and would last maybe 20 seconds before it started dying down. this other one isnt even phased by wood! how did i ever live without it... lol
  13. alright, ive moved slow the last few days. i had some issues cutting my rear panel. but finally got it cut out. the panel itself has some problems so im going to remake it, but the back section is okay, so i got it gluing on. also routed the front for binding. will do the back soon. $32 for this bit, but it came with a flush cut bearing as well so it will be useful! bearing was too big to route this one spot =( so i had to do it by hand, wasnt too bad. this is before: and yes there is a guitar in this mess somewhere! this is how you make a few clamps do the work of about 3X as many clamps!
  14. you only need one dpdt switch to make the two pickups series/parallel. so why not use one switch for that, and the other for either a coil split, or making the humbucker bobbins series/parallel as well (if its a 3 or 4 wire humbucker. if its not, go to my webpage in my sig and you can convert it to 3 or 4 wires) then you could have the humbucker bobbins in series or parallel, which is in turn then in series or parallel with the single coil. or you can do a phase reversal or something. or better yet the second switch can be a dp3t switch and can make the humbucker series/parallel/split all in one! no use for 2 switches for one function, unless you like that being a way to turn off the pickup... but it seems like having to flip both switches at the same time on the fly would be a bit redundant
  15. oh man, i took the day off, didnt feel up to the work today spent the morning wakeboarding instead, then did some shopping at goodwill, got a book of sudoku now i wish i had worked though glad you liked my page! some of its not all that fantastic, but the more recent stuff is a bit more helpful. im still working on a few of the pages. actually i have a guy on another board who spent today trying to redesign the menu and such, because its getting a bit excessive for being in a table like it is lol necks looking good so far! that was probably the most nerve racking part of this build (first time ive done a neck). i was nervous about getting the heel right. screw a dovetail i know id mess that up! whats the little stick in the first picture?
  16. on my page in my sig is the simple solution i had to bookmatch seams. it worked well for me albeit a little primitive. i tried several ways prior to that that didnt work too! edit - looks like that IS what you tried, hmm. those are pretty big pieces so it would take a long time that way. if your boards are warping after a day or two, they may not be stable enough to be using on a guitar yet. i dont know about moisture contents and such, but they should be pretty stable... were they warping so that the edge is still straight but bowed up a little? meaning you could clamp it down flat on a table and still have a good seam
  17. yeah it just made sense to me to do. and then theres the added slightly-unique and coolness factor haha. im curious to hear how it ends up sounding, or if it will be THAT much different. again though, i dont use the bridge pup often, but maybe this will change that!
  18. haha drill press? who needs it! all mine is done with a hand drill heck i can barely use my router for anything because i have no templates nor bits with bearings! it does add a bit of fun to it, having to get creative to get things done. i probably spend more time making weird workarounds than i do actually building the guitar =p
  19. man that neck is teh sexxxxxyyyy! i realllly like the different wood for the headstock, ive never seen that before. this is sweet, and i may have to steal that idea next time =)
  20. if youre going to do the sides black, you can use wood filler if the gaps come back. i had the same issue on my first build. this time i did a lot better clamping job, so i wouldnt have the same problem again. i had it a lotttt worse than you did too! a little gorilla glue in the crack will expand and fill it also, then wood filler over that to make sure its smooth
  21. who needs a bandsaw, do it the old fashioned way! sometimes you gotta work with what you have! i have a pretty nice router, but i dont route my pup cavities because i have no templates, so i use an Xacto knife (semihollow guitar so its just a 1/4" top) but it takes a lot longer! lol looking forward to progress! oh and yeah, belt sanders will definitely burn things! i burned my neck constantly when shaping it, just make sure you leave justttt enough extra wood to sand off the burning by hand, it cant be a bit tough to sand off sometimes!
  22. you could have just put the knobs recessed and in the side of the guitar, so theyre not visible but still exist, might be kinda neat on a build sometime! youd hardly need knobs, just something to cover the knurl on the pots a little. could have a switch too... hmmm got my mind going now! looking good, glad you got your neck problem figured out. looks like youre working fairly limited with tools, welcome to my world! as for routing the pup first. just install the neck, and if its a little off, adjust the route a little to move it into place, and make your own pickup mounting ring the will hold it in the right spot and cover the route
  23. (cont.'d) and this is what i deal with every time i work on my guitars... my friendly neighbor from across the way! used the Xacto to cut the soundholes out
  24. alright, made the little plates for mounting the pups, they arent that pretty but whatever... also cut the soundhole out. changed the shape a bit from the original plan. cleaned it up for the most part, but i will have to do a bit more when i start finishing. then i started making the rear access panel. but decided partway through that my Xacto knife was too dull, and i need a new blade
