  1. Neck staining is done in Wudtone Vintage Yellow. A bit of hobby juggling between stain drying and homebrewing too.
  2. Shaping the headstock. I always liked the fat 70's fender design, so I went with that style. Next was the guitar name. This one is made up of letters from my kid's names. I went with the pyrography approach. Printed up a stencil, traced it on, and after a few practices, I went to work with my soldering iron.
  3. I'll get there. Just trying to copy photos over from the stupid smartphone to the lappy - sync'ing issues.
  4. The kit arrives! And I finally work out how to post a pic on this forum... geez how hard is it!?!?
  5. Hi guys, Thought I'd start a thread for my kit. I'd been thinking of a kit for about a year, couldn't make up my mind between Tele's, Strats. I ended up going with this kit. http://www.guitarmakersemporium.com.au/product/phat-strat-ash-humbucker-pearl/ The plan was to stain it Surf Green. Then it arrived, and I realised cheap kit body's aren't made of a single piece of wood. Seeing the layout of grain in some parts just would've annoyed me. The guitar's in it's setup stages now, but I'll sort out my photos for the build diary. (once I work out how to upload them). Cheers Pete
  6. Thanks mate. First guitar and bugger all tools... Hmm, got a clamp I can use. I'll think of something. I was hoping to avoid the glue, but it looks like the best bet.
  7. Got a problem with loose frets at the moment. The neck on my kit is giving a lot of fret buzz, with a couple of high frets at 8th & 16th. A workmate asked if I could slide a pielce of paper between the frets & fretboard, so when I went home and looked I was shocked at how many were high. I'm guessing that this neck was made on a friday arvo. The worker's mates are heading off for after work drinks and he doesn't want to be left behind... Anyway, i've got most of them down, but there's still a high edge at the 8th fret, i'm trying to bang it down, but I'm wary of hitting too hard... Trying hard to research threads rather than start new ones for stupid questions with obvious answers.
  8. Hi guys, Another Noob. I've just completed a DIY strat kit, and am in the home stretch, just setup issues at the moment. Discovering the amount of different tools that are available for every job. However the small shed I have is taken up with brewing equipment I've acquired over the years. (being here reminds me of joining brewing forums as a Kit-n-kilo guy & seeing the all grain recipes). Looking at all the amazing guitars & basses being made here blows my mind. I'll happily share my strat pics once I build up more of a post count. (but it's a bit of a half arsed attempt. I'm no perfectionist) Cheers Pete
  9. Hi guys, First kit guitar build & first post. I'm in the same predicament. Read that sanding sealer is great. I go out, buy it, paint it on the ash body and sand it back. It feels nice and smooth. I plan on spray painting this guitar with my father in law as he has a spray gun & compressor, so I've got the paint all ready to go, Primer, thinners, acrylic & top coat. (automotive paint). I tell him about this sanding sealer, and he looks at me "is it oil based"? Oh crap, I can't remember. Go home, look, yep, it's feast & watson oil based. Crap. The plan now is to grab a spare piece of wood and test it first with the sanding sealer & primer. I had planned on staining this guitar, but realised once it arrived that affordable(cheap) guitar kits are not made up of single pieces of wood. The different grain patterns would've annoyed me to no end.
