  1. Should work fine. After all, it's an ebony board, that's never had frets before, right ?

Dan Erlewine did sound transmission tests on various fretting styles, and came to the conclusion that frets that had no glue at all, had the most poor reading on the meter.

I used a caul press. They went in fine.I put glue on the left and right of the slot leaving a space in the middle so the fret would seat.

Checking my receipts,I got my fretwire from Warmoth. It is #6150.

I don`t know what size the slot was supposed to be.I don`t know why I had in my mind .024

The .026 slot worked out fine.

If anyone knows the tang dimensions for 6150 wire I`m curious :D

  2. As long as your tangs are wider then the cuts of the fretboard you can just press them in. What is it about the sanding of Ebony that you don't care for? To me it felt different while sanding then Rosewood or Maple for sure but it seemed to sand out easy enough.

It did sand very easy.I guess I just liked the way it worked around 600 and 800.By the time 2000 came, the oily residue was annoying.

Next time I`ll just use a rasp. :D

  3. I attached a link to where I`m at right now.

I don`t like the way that ebony sands out.

Should I glue the frets or just press them in?

I ordered the brass caul for $3.99 from Stew-Mac and sandwiched it between steel and welded it.I can just pull it out and replace with any sized radius caul.I attached it to some round stock and bolted it so it will move and settle where it has to...just like the high priced one :D

  4. Is that the issue - you're trying to figure out how to smooth over the edges of the body or top of the guitar?

If you'd like to know the size he suggested, let me know and I'll check into it later.

    Yes,that`s what I`m trying to do. :D

Thanks to all for the input.

Because of the body shape,I have to do the edges before I glue them (the wings) to the neck-thru.

  5. Do what PRS does. Flame maple veneer. You can get iron on stuff at your local wood store. Its 1/8" thick usually. If you can route that, then do the iron on stuff, or glue it on if you make your own. Otherwise, you can leave it natural, and dye the rest.

I just wanted nice little rounded edges :D I`m quite past wood choice and decision of top.CLICK HERE

  6. i was thinking about it.... you might want to use a really hard wood top that doesn't need to be sealed or finished (padouk, bloodwood, pau amarello, purple heart, tulip wood) , cause any square edges like that, finish will crack off the first chance it gets, ...

Thanks,I should have stated,I`m already into the top too far. It`s Mahogany.

  7. This is where I`m at so far.The bottom wing is my second one because my jigsaw blade walked too far on me.The neck is angled and I have Five pointed stars for markers under the tape.I still have to drill to inlay the side position markers on the neck.I will be painting this blue.

Question?: Can I also paint black around the edges for a sunburst effect or do I have to use a blue stain first and then paint?

  8. I mount mine first then lay the neck fingerboard side down and cut it as close to the neck as I can then finish it up on the belt sander

"Yeah, that`s what I was going to do but I`m making a neck-thru-body guitar and the higher frets will be over the body section of the neck, which is wider than my fret board.(I laminated a wide three piece neck blank to start with)"

Is there an echo in here here :D

Its glued up.I`ll take the clamps off tomorrow.

I put masking tape over the truss rod to keep glue out.Just as I applied the glue,my neighbor comes up to talk to me about borrowing something.I told him I was busy but lost concentration anyway and put fretboard over tape.I took it up right away and removed tape ,but now the glue is on the fingerboard.I wiped it as best I could, but man what a hassle. So I probably won`t be able to remove the truss rod very easily in the future. 9. I marked the tapered sides of the masked fretboard and used double sided tape on a 1/2" thick x 2 1/2"w x 30" long, straight piece of stainless with a machined edge.I stuck the ebony board on top of that with the edge ligning up along the straight edge and ran it down the band saw.It worked great....

...except there are no teeth left on my bandsaw :D J/K

My fretboard is now tapered and ready for gluing.

Thanks for the help everyone. B)
