  1. as far as the actual fretting.......probably the part of building i like the most...

Same here.It is very satisfying when you are done.

I did the radiusing and fretting on my present build and must say Cocobolo is one hard wood.I have another board but may put that off for something different.I don`t look foward to radiusing that stuff again.I hope this neck plays as well as my first one.

  2. Building guitars is more about making templates then anything else.

I`m not against templates, but I don`t believe that`s what building guitars is about. Not to me anyway.

Building guitars is more about having fun for me.Oh,I have Three routers, two router tables,a 2 1/2 hp plunge router,templates...

....if I bought a CNC machine, for business reasons I understand it,but for personal building, well you get the picture.

  3. believe it or not,i find the body much more difficult than the neck...i think mostly because of all the routing and curved lines...i am soon to go back to building neck through instruments....i find them easier as well...i just hate all of the blending and neck pocket fitup involved with a set neck...way too much planning.

I agree, although I`ve only built one guitar and that was a neck-thru.It went fairly smooth. For some reason I`d rather carve the body by hand than route, although I was probably forced to do it due to my lame bandsaws.By the time I set up to route I could already be deep in wood chips with the rasps. As a matter of fact,I just finished that a couple of minutes ago on my bass body.I enjoy the rasps.

  4. If it`s an already finished neck you have your work cut out for you.A thickness sander is of no use.

If you can sand back to the natural wood, lay a veneer on there.Any thicker you are going to make your tuners irrelevent and I don`t know if you can take alot off cleanly if you want to put on a thicker piece of Wenge.

  5. ok ive been saying for a while now that id be doing the routing but u got the router so im going to do it

    just some questions b4

Is there a certain distance from the nut the bridge???

How do i determain the depth of the neck pocket??by measuring the hight of the bridge??

is there an ideal pickups depth???

if anyone has any answers or tips on these point that would be heaps good

    thx hopfully finishing it soon

Depending on the scale length you want, most basses are 34" from nut to bridge for standard long scale.

That would be 17" to the twelth fret.

For neck pocket do search and check the tutorals, that`s how you will learn more.

Pickups are your preference for what sound you are going for.I like Bartolini.

The depth of route depends on your pickup choice, where they sit tonally in relation to your strings and the type of sound they pickup.

There is a sweetspot, but each pickup is different depending on what sound you`re trying to get out of `em.
