Looks freakn awesome! Can't wait to see more.
Thanks Jon.
Unfortunately I have to take several days off from working on it because I have to go away and do some family stuff. It`s a shame because I was getting into it.
By the way,do you know if I have to use a grain filler or sanding sealer with a Tru-oil or Maloofs Poly/Oil,
or can I wet sand the beginning coats with the oil so they act like a filler?

Got the fretboard glued on.I have not shaped the neck yet.Only roughly.
The dark grain that runs down the Cocobolo, where it meets the center Walnut laminate, that also has a dark grain line.It looks like a continuation.I thought that looked kind of neat.It just worked out that way.
Another shot.

My prayers go out to his loved ones.
Be blessed

Thank you for the replies.I will go for an oil finish.
-
Your desire sounds plenty strong, and that`s not just an itch.I would go for it.
-
I`m not ready to do it yet but ,I`m trying to decide which finish to do.
Here is the mockup.
I was thinking maybe a French Polish but I am not sure yet.I kind of like doing the long and tedious.
Maybe Tru-oil.
What do others think?

I did that to get out of needing to route channels to lower the entire bridge pieces.
I`m glad you were able to set that up.
Can you put a sound bite of your bass up?
I have a barto pre-amp and I am putting in a three-way toggle for a
series/Single coil (Bridge end of HB)/parallel set-up.

I was just joking about the points. They look great!I havent had any problems yet, however this is the first time that I have used this shape for a bass. I still have some sanding to do on it so the points will shorten a little. -
That`s a great looking piece of wood. That headstock looks sharp.
Do those break off if it falls?
-
Wow awsome =)
Cant wait to see some more progress!
Thanks Travis.
I know this looks rough right now. It`s my second build .I rough cut the headstock with a coping saw and will shape the rest with rasps, files, scrapers and rifflers.I have three routers, but I really enjoy using the hand tools.I know it takes longer, but I like it.
-
I can't wait to see that scarf joint on the underside.
As per your request. This is just the rough shaping of the headstock.I did a little rasp work.
The other side.

Fretboard:Cocobola
Bartolini MM42CBJD3 Quad-coil bass Pickup
Hipshot bridges and tuners
I routed the truss-rod channel
The knobs are ebony and Rosewood.I am going to trim the tops off and glue on excess cocobola from my fretboard.

The Minwax looks clear and the quilt shows deep.Fine job.
If they are quilted, what color will you make the new PUP covers?

Nice looking neck laminates. Out of curiosity how wide are the center grouping of laminates?
Peace,Rich
Hi Rich,
The center group of laminates measure 1-1/4 "
I probably should have made the center walnut a 1/4".
I hope it still looks nice.

Here is my Headstock Blank scarfed onto my neck.
-
They are nice, and they are your own.
I like your bass best best bass bass best bestessest

So I glue the Headstock to my neckthru Bass, and as I check the top where the fretboard attaches the angle is a hair off.Now I realised I should have checked it FIRST.Yeah I know,I`m a... (FILL IN THE BLANK HERE).
I made my own scarf jig and faced the angles very nicely.
Now I figure out where it went off.
My neckthru has an angled neck.I made that angle with neck taper before I did the scarf joint,so now when I put the neck in my router jig with the headstock(same thickness end to end) at the same time as neck(different thickness end to end),and route, the angle is a hair different on one than the other= Bad Scarf
Well Thank God I caught it right away.I pulled it apart and quickly wiped all the glue off.It could have been a disaster.
Today I fixed it and it has glued up nicely.
Here`s the Joke part...
"My first guitar didn`t have a headstock, how was I supposed to know!"
-
OMG...that looks so shoddy! Maybe it's because the ferrules at the back need the extra space?....I'd space them evenly though, not like that....I can't think of a reasonable explanation for that.
Maybe for the difference between F-spacing and other guitars ,and they just use a universal template./?
Not that that`s reasonable,but cheaper .
-
it's ugly
I don`t think it`s ugly.
I think it`s pretty unique!
Cool guitar.
-
That`s coming along really nice Jon.
I know you`re itchin` to fire `er up!
-
Can you post pictures???

That is one cool Bass!
I can`t wait to see it done.
Walnut Bass
in In Progress and Finished Work
Posted
I will definately fill the pores. It`s the Walnut that has the most open grain on this project.
I read somewhere once, but not sure if it is this application, that if you sand inbetween coats of Tru-oil with 400 grit and mineral spirits until the pores are filled, then you apply your finishing coats. Then if you want a high gloss use the Zinsser `s Bulls Eye French Polish .
