  1. lookin good, when i first saw body after you burned it i wasnt sure how it would look but it looks killer in that pic, id like to see a straight on shot of it
  2. already have the business thing down. spent between 1995 and 2003 running 4 business with my father and the last year or so running a mobile electronics shop with a friend (im currently running the installs while he runs the sales end) building guitars isnt something i will just drop everything for at this point. i have been playing for about 17 years and have been modding guitars of my own for the 5-6. its only been the last 2 or so years that i have toyed with the idea of building. in those to years i spent the first year and a half on this site reading and soaking in all the info and a half a year building my first in what spare time ive had lately
  3. thanks for the comments EVERYONE..... That was pretty much my plan man, 10 years ago you dont know how well that comment would have fit thanks for the links, i was using the search engine this afternoon for like an hour but kept gettin page errors stuff im not trying to be a dick here or anything myself but.......if you actually read the prevoius posts you would see that i did spend the hour of free time that i had this afternoon (while my 1 year old daughter was sleeping) on the search engine but could not find anything relevant or got page errors (i would have found some of the threads fryovanni posted had i not gotten page errors. im not trying to start a fight or anything, i just get a little offended by comments like that. i do however appreciate comments like these, so thankyou thanks for the comments thankyou all for the comments id just like to say im not asking "How to become a luthier/guitar builder". i would like to build guitars for a living, and have and will continue to devote all of my spare time to learning and building the skills necessary and see where that takes me.
  4. i'm not here for negativity bud. im here for good solid advice, so lets have it. "Do a search--this topic has been well covered, and I believe you'll find lots of helpful advice on this too. Search the whole site --I don't remember which section it was covered in." sorry Mcguard, i looked for the last hour but couldnt find anything that related. so lets have it, positive or negative as long as its constructive i want it
  5. just wondering if any "experienced builders" and Professional builders like Perry and Myka (love both your work), have any advice for someone starting out who would like to eventually (within the next 5 - 10 years) build for a living.
  6. Has anyone here used it? just wondering how easy it is to spray, is it ready to spray, and how well does it wet sand (I used Auto Air Colors waterbased automotive paint on my new guitar for the base and graphics and you cannot wet sand the stuff, has to be sanded dry)
  7. because im not using a pickguard, its rear routed. there will be one back cover on the guitar.
  8. when i did a test fit of all the parts ( used all the leftover hardware from my dean when i changed the hardware) i had just enough of a downward pull on the the bridge to not worry about recessing the tailpeice, it was bottomed out but there was just enough pull on the bridge. I really wish a camera could capture that colour properly though. in the sunlight you catch all the pearl in the paint and it looks like a reddish copper and should pop when i get the clear on it.
  9. looks cool, i've been waiting to see someone tackle an all carbon finish.
  10. its been a long and busy 5 months but im almost finished. guitar has been built and i shot the base coat and graphic this afternoon. 2 more pics after basecoat was shot. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Sui...ff/IMG_3504.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Sui...ff/IMG_3505.jpg a few pics after spraying the graphic. (no the cross isnt crooked near the bridge, the bridge is tilted) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Sui...ff/IMG_3508.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Sui...ff/IMG_3509.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Sui...ff/IMG_3510.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Sui...ff/IMG_3512.jpg and 2 pics of the washbirn headstock sprayed in the same grey as the cross http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Sui...ff/IMG_3516.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Sui...ff/IMG_3517.jpg both colours (base and graphic) were custom mixed and both include a healthy dose of red pearl. i was going to paint the guitar black with red top and black burst but i ran in to a gun problem and didnt have enough red to do it again so i mixed up the custom pearl orange and shot the entire guitar. Now i just need to order the clear and ill be set. let me know what yall think.
  11. no kiddin. makes me want to attend his course and then get some more experiance under my belt then start my own school ill offer it to 16 studnts, for $11,000 WITH accomodations and also a 5 week course for $3,000 per person i would definatly be making a helluva lot more than i am now
  12. correct me if im wrong but i believe when you measure out where you bridge is supposed to go (measure from the nut to the center of each post acording to scale) you then push the bass side of the bridge bach an additional 16th of an inch (or 8th inch, i cant quite remember)
  13. thanks, the idea i had in mind was that i love the clean sound of strats but i cant play them what so ever(i hate their neck profile). i also thought one would look cool with pointed horns. so i decided to build my own. i've had a washburn neck sittin around for sometime and has a comfortable feel so why not just build the body for it. the only down side is the cost. the body it self is cheap enough, about $40.00Can ($25 - $30 for wood and $10 to have it planed after glueing). but hardware. i could buy 2 squire strats for the cost of the hardware.
  14. actually, that "glue line" you see isnt a glue line, its the center line i drew on the guitar. its actually a 3 peice body, a 2" peice sandwiched by 2 7" peices yeah im gonna recess the tom. i just need to see which tom imma use. i saw one online somewhere and i liked the design a lot better than most. "So what? That's s'pose to be RG on steroids?" actually, i used a strat copy to get basic design and just tweeked the horns, but looking at it now it actually does resemble an rg a bit
  15. well, just got the wood planed and the body shape tweeked a bit (i also have a full scale drawing to make a mdf template to rout out the final shape) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Sui...ff/IMG_2297.jpg i think this is a little more balanced. comments are appreciated. ignore the markings for the neck pocket, i was just playing around with it last night
  16. looks like its HCSB or HOSB and it looks stamped, hmmmmm interesting. he went from not being able to sand a guitar smooth to building a complete buitar from scratch.......and if you just built that a year ago, why do you need to replace the neck??????
  17. sorry man, just a suggestion, and if you've seen it done before you'd see what i mean. its not as dramatic as you think, just verry subtle
  18. thanks for the constructive criticism , i am still playing with the horns a bit, and i am trying to make it a little top heavy, my Dean is a little top heavy and for some reason i like it. "with a little lgm thingy on the bottom", sorry LGM, but I had to . im not 100% on the finish yet, but i do know its going a transparent (or candy) blood red with a candy black burst (prolly give it verry dark black cherry look). from there i may go with some sort of gothic design, not sure though, ill have to wait untill i have the base colours done to decide where to go from there.
  19. whoa, if you want ghost like flame on your guitar and are using a true candy apple red (tri-coat, mettalic gold base, transparent red, and clear) have your painter lay down the first 2-3 coats of the red and one coat of clear, then tape off and spray the flames with the same red(2-3 coats), remove the tape and finish spraying the red. when its done the flames will be 2-3 shades darker than the res of the body when looking straight at it, and dissapear when you look at it on an angle.
  20. hey yall, my first post on this site. im buildin my first guitar and have been planning for a while now. body will be a 3 peice ash, rear routed to avoid using a pickguard. loaded with a trio of emg sa pickups, 1 volume, 2 tone knobs. 5 way strat style switch. tone pros ToM bridge and tail peice. the neck is a washburn replacement neck i picked up a few years ago. hears what i have so far... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Sui...ff/IMG_2041.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Sui...ff/492ce0d6.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Sui...ff/ac2a13ee.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Sui...ff/7ca7f2d9.jpg and this is a rough idea of the body design http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Sui...ff/IMG_2048.jpg let me know what yall think
