  1. I have a 3 1/2 HP router, and I always go 1/8" in my passes. I've shattered a router bit routing a PU cavity in an Ash Tele body going too deep.
  2. I think it makes more sence to shape the neck first, then add the wings...or at least for the way I shape necks, on the idle drum of my belt sander.
  3. I don't do it as a living, so I'm not a proffesional, but I'm not a newb. I would call a newb someone who's been doing for less than 1 year, or is building their first guitar.
  4. How do we catagorize our selves? What constituets(sp?) someone being a newb or a pro? A certain # of guitars? Having sold your work? Being able to build completely from scratch?
  5. That thing is SWEEEET! Looks like you have enough Maple on the top to arch it...BTW, that is SWEEEET Maple, too!
  6. Yeah, maybe NOOBS VS PROS would create hard feelings. How 'bout PROS VS PROS guitars? Maybe two teams of four pros: Pro 1 = Body Pro 2 = Neck Pro 3 = Finishing Pro 4 = Assembly Maybe we vote on who the builders would be, anyone who wants a chance at being a builder in one of those four catagories puts up $25 which will help pay for the guitars' materials, shipping etc... Then we vote on the teams, then anybody who wants to be in the draw for the guitars puts up $25, which also goes into the guitar and/or website.
  7. YEAH! Anybody who wants a chance to win the guitars or participate in building would donate $25, and the money donated would actually pay for the guitar's materials and shipping costs, anything left over would go the website directly. I REALLY like the idea of NOOBS and PROS in a compitition.
  8. That's what happend to a guitar I tried to sell on ebay - it ended up selling in a music store. I did sell a mandolin I made on ebay though.
  9. I do the whole body at once with a 2" long flush trim bit. Watch out in certain areas, like the tips of the horns, and area where you are going agianst the grain, the bit can "chatter" and bust out chunks.
  10. Okay, I'll just enter this bass, and save the other one for next month. Lex Luthier's official entry for this month SPECS: 1-piece Rock Maple neck Lightly flamed Ebony fingerboard 2-piece locally cut Western Walnut, Claro figured Hand rubbed oil finish Gold hardware Humbucker pickup Push-pull treble booster Series/Parrallel mini-switch Self-designed glueless dovetail neck joint
  11. I voted "I can work, but cant afford to donate materials". I could probably donate wood I have "in stock", but I'm not really in a position to go buy any wood for the project (I spent $150CDN on the wood for a bass I'm doing) because it's sorta expensive, unless it was something my work has in stock that I could get for real cheap or even free - the only wood they stock that would be somewhat useful would be Western Maple.
  12. Thicknessing of materials. Cutting out the body shape. Contouring the body.
  13. I just glued it about an hour ago, I'll work on it tomorrow.
  14. In my first thread regarding this someone suggested there be a whole section devoted to this.
  15. Those are both very good ideas. Have people donate a few bucks each for shipping. I ESPECIALLY like your Quality of Work idea.
  16. It was a cool idea, but I think it would be too hard to organize.
  17. THAT TELE IS SWEEEEEEEEEEET! You make pens on your lathe too? What kinds of woods do you prefer? When I first started making them I tried a bunch of different woods, but found Cocobolo to be the best. Ebony was pretty cool, but REALLY likes to split when I drill out the blanks, so I've only ever done 2 or 3 ebony pens, The bulk of the 30 something I've made so far have been Cocobolo. Have you ever sold any of your pens? My Great Aunt has been asking me to make some so she can give them to her friends, and shes given me an average of $75CDN for each one!
  18. I'd definatly vote Girlfriend if I had a girlfriend like THIS!
  19. Yeah, I just saw a thread in the solid body guitar chat section with "Kench" as the most recent post...was *REALLY* suprized by that, but it doesn't seem to be THE Kench...
  20. That's what I like to do, but I use a band saw to take off most of the material.
