  1. what ever happened to this thread, i really wanna see this guitar in all its finished glory!
  2. could someone post the link to mattia's jig? i cant seem to locate it considering he has 146 pages of posts
  3. hey carousel, could you post a picture of the fixture you used to make the radius dish.. you showed it to me a while back, but i didnt bookmark it
  4. i like your photography almost as much as your progress. The depth of field in the shot of the sides and the kerfing and stuff makes it look like a senior portrait. Lol Nice work
  5. i knew all it would take is someone telling me something totally obvious before i would realize it. a 25 foot radius is the same no matter what the length of the piece is, duh on me. ITs amazing the things i overlook sometimes, makes me think im slightly challenged sometimes.
  6. i got another question that i just don't know where to look to find the answer. I understand that you clamp a soundboard into a radius dish using a go bar press, and that you have braces with curved bottoms and that is what makes the radius. The back is straight forward because all the braces go straight across, but for the top, there is the x brace, as well as a bunch of other little braces that connect as well. Is it just the x brace that gets the curve since it pretty much goes the across the whole guitar? or do the little ones also get curved a little. If i had to guess, i would guess only the ones that go across the whole soundboard get the curve because the little ones dont span enough distance to really make up much of a curve? Let me know if i am thinking correctly. Thanks in advance Rich because I'm sure you will be answering this
  7. can anyone tell me why some dishes are circles, and others are shaped like guitars? I assume its the same idea, just easier to center on a guitar shaped one? As you can see, i know nothing about sanding dishes or go bar presses. Im an electric builder. Thanks for telling me to google dished workboard. I have searched radius dish, sanding dish, and other things similar and found nothing as good as what i found with dished workboard.
  8. so what do you make your dishes out of. im guessing mdf, and the thickest i can get locally is 3/4 inch. that somehow dosnt seem thick enough tho.
  9. I am about to brace up my soundboard for my first acoustic, but i do not have radius dishes. I am the type who likes to build everything i can, even if it costs more in time or materials in the long run ( i just like building stuff). So im curious to see what everyone does to make there radius dishes, so i can start dabbling in that area. thanks! Rob
  10. yeah i enjoy talking with other people who do this stuff as well. Is there like, an IRC channel for project guitar? if not there should be!
  11. ah i imagine using 1 inch staples as opposed to hammering in brads would make that process alot more fun and alot less tedious. as well as more accurate because you can hold the piece with a hand, staple with the other.
  12. is there any advantage of a semi solid over a solid mold? i may be silly, but the semi solid molds look like they would take a bit more time to make.. considering you gota make sure everything is lined up and in square, and then (nail or glue?) all the little braces in. Whereas a solid mold, you take a bunch of mdf, glue and screw it together, cut out and shape your shape, and your done. So before i jump in and make one or the other, which one will be better in the long run? I have a large pile of 1/2 thick MDF, so materials is not an issue.
  13. its awesome to see so many people are into building guitars. Ill have to post some pics of my tele style i just built, it came out awesome, and plays just as good. Check out my sig for my first guitars, a bass and a strat. The bass i am very proud of. Started building my body mold today, ill post pics when it is done.
  14. I have build 4 solid body guitars, and i am getting quite comfortable in the art to the point where the last one i made is a great joy to play and has replaced my boughten guitar in terms of the one i play regularly. I am now ready to jump into acoustic building to see where that may take me. I dont even own an acoustic guitar so building one that plays well would be a real treat. Anyway, first place to start i guess would be the body mold. So i was wondering what you guys do for the body mold, since it is so important in the bending of the sides and stuff of that matter. I have read 4 sheets of 1/2 MDF makes a great solid mold, but i have also heard of other methods. What ones do you guys use, and reccomend? Thanks!
  15. I painted and finished a guitar of mine almost a year ago.. When i was done with it, it looked pretty good.. it was a little peely, but i did a littl ebuffing and it was nice and shiny. Almost a year later, the clear has shrunk so much that i can see the grain in the ash on the back.. and the wavyness from the curl on the front... i know this cant be a normal rate of shrinkage... is there any brand of clear that shrinks less? like perhaps the stuff at stewart mcdonald? Are there any factors that contribute to shrinkage other then crappy clear?... perhaps using a speedy hardener (which i did like a fool), or shooting the clear when it is too hot out (95 summer day)... thanks!
  16. I was trying to remove the cover plate on my seymour duncan vintage 54 pickup, and in the process, i severed one of the coil wires that comes off the pickup to the eyelets. how do i go about fixing htis problem? do i just pull a ny strand from the coil and solder it to the eyelet, or will that not work.. help me please!!!
  17. I just bought a telecaster seymour duncan vintage rhythm pickup with the chrome plate on it for the neck.... and since im an idiot, it fell out of my hands and just happened to land right on top of a saw blade in my tool box.. leaving a nice ugly ding in the cover.. I can just swap out the cover for another cover, but i cant figure out how to get the thing off. I thought it would be something that slips on and off, but its on there good. Does anyone know how to get it off of there?
  18. I have read numerous times that new flat oil stones are the best way to level frets.. IS that what all of you guys use? or do you use something more common like a sanding block? I have had very bad luck with fret leveling in the past, so im trying to figure out the best tool for the job.
  19. you gota be a little more specific.. by semi gloss do you mean just a satin shine and not a mirror finish? IM also assuming that you want it to be a wood finish and not a painted one by your context. I usually dont clear coat wood finish guitars, i go with danish oil so it still looks like wood, and not a piece of plastic.
  20. Does anyone have, or know where i can get accurate gibson firebird plans? they are tough as heck to find
  21. Yea like swedishLuthier said, sanding with course grit removes material and imperfections in the wood, but leaves its own tool marks. As you go down the line with the sandpaper, you remove the marks from the previous sandpaper, but you leave new marks with the paper your using until you get down to the 180-220 area where the marks left are small enough that a finish will cover them
  22. the finish dosnt stick to the handle and then when u remove the handle, peel the paint away with it? i only ask because i have painted cars before, and i know if i leave the masking on too long, and go to pull it off, the finish sometimes comes with it.
  23. Hello, i am building a telecaster, and i was just curious if there was like a, standard amount your supposed to cut the neck pocket larger if you were planning on painting it and finishing it with a laquer. I am only asking because i have had the trouble in the past of a good fit, turning into a tight or no fit after finishing, and was just curious if its generally known how muych thickness u can expect to get. Thanks
  24. i shoulda mentioned that i am painting it solid black so how it looks dosnt matter. So if im going with a solid color? does it matter what i use to fill the grain, as long as its filled?
