  1. you can cut a body out entirely with just a router and a cheap template, just veeeeeryyyy slowly
  2. FWIW, although I've obviously never played one of their necks, judging from what’s been posted here/ in blogs, as far as I can deduce; Setch, WesV, Skelf, Mattia and garehanman (spelling?) = awesome (in order of locality not percived quality) Obviously that an entirely superficial judgment, but their work looks top notch. anyway [/my opinion]
  3. those look awesome I'd bombard you with more compliments but my friends just decided to throw up all over my carpet (nicely avoiding the toilet which was directly in front of him In fact hes the only reason im still awake at 3:30 am AGAIN basically nice guitars The bass is especially awesome, as its so unique I love all 3 electrics too the burst on the lpjr is a bit abrupt imho (or maybe its just the photo?), but it still looks cool overall anyway, to summarise me likey ben btw ben means idiot in chinese. I leant that today you didnt need ot know that but whatever- you do now also BT (my initials) means pervert great fin
  4. this is quite possibly my favourite guitar ive seen you make so far alan. I want one
  5. nǐ hǎo, nǐ de qīng wā méi you dai ling dai *** g2g now but im posting it 1/2 done cos it takes quite a while to do all the accent things and i dont want to lose it. Will edit others in later
  6. In response to the "and in another language" part of your post, Luke, say "ni hao, ni de qing wa mei you dai ling dai" to someone who understands chinese. Also say "wo mei you didi". EDIT: **thinking about it i should probably explain what they mean, to confirm that its not (very) offensive.... first means; "Hello, your frog has no tie" Second means; "I have no little brother" (and nothing else.... honest ) Kinda ruins it when you know what they mean
  7. where and why would they use mdf? the only way that i could see them fitting mdf in there, without it being visible (in pickup/ neck/ control cavity routes etc), would be to hollow out part of the basswood beore they glued it, fill the hole with MDF, then glue... And why the hell would they bother Basswood's cheap anyway, surely they wouldnt go to all that effort to hide mdf in there, whilst gaining so little and risking it damaging their reputation (well i suppose its not like they have a particularly amazing one anyway , but i hope you get my point) etc
  8. the prs one i have is definitely solid basswood under the veneer fwiw
  9. whoooooa You have to enter that for GOTM!
  10. That was why I wrote the pedantry thing, I was sure the effect would be miniscule what do you use to level your frets then? Do you use a radiused block, or a flat surface? The way im interpreting it from what you wrote above, is that you use something flat to level in the same direction as the string, creating a compound radius in effect...? I thought that when you leveled the frets, you'd just level them to the same radius as the board. I know this thread has gone past the point of usefulness (is that even a word?) to you sexybeast, but its still kinda interesting. (or at least I think so)
  11. That is a very interesting point that seems to have been completely over looked... Perry, the way I understand this, this would suggest that you may actually be wrong. Even if you never bent a string whilst playing, a flat board would allow for a lower action than a board with any (non-compound) radius [/pedantry] (ok so im a hypocrite, sorry )
  12. I vote padauak fretboard with a piece of maple veneer between the board and the neck.
  13. How do you play barre chords sexybeast? Something I noticed about the unradiused board, is that barre chords are really uncomfortable if you play them the 'standard' way, with your first finger spanning the whole fretboard (if that makes sense) I have big hands, so I play them with my thumb on the low E usually, so it doesnt affect me. good luck!
  14. no Well I think it was answered quite nicely in this post Basically its just the same as with a radiused fretboard... just a little easier. I guess there are some pretty obvious things to think about, for example you'd need to use a bridge and nut with no radius... you woudnt need to prebend the frets much (if at all) etc... I found it really easy
  15. Fwiw the guitar I made had no radius on the fingerboard and I really like it. Also I hold the guitar neck in the non-classical way, with my thumb round the neck, and not on the centre of the back of the neck.... most people that play like this seem to prefer radiused boards (judging by opinions I've read), but I guess I'm just odd. BTW, dont be so pedantic perry You know what he meant; string bends are used a hell of a lot in almost all styles of guitar playing, so a flatter fretboard will allow for a lower action, whilst still making bends playable. Sure there may not be a world of difference between a flat board and a 20" radius one, unless you do insane string bends, but theoretically, the action could still be lower on a flat board and allow for string bends. Anyway, I'm sure you already know that
  16. Its looking cool so far That headstock goes really well with that body imho
  17. I'd love to, but I'll be at uni in Bristol in november... I dont think my student budget would stretch to the trainfare!
  18. sounds good! but that photo's a little out of focus screws my eyes up
  19. Thats looking awesome! I cant really play bass but... I WANT THAT BASS! Guitar is looking great too
  20. this poll's gonna be close... its usually quite easy to guess the winner at the start, but this time i have no idea... all are great
  21. You know if you wanted it to be able to use harmonic mode, you could probably mod it for the price of a dpdt switch...
  22. Seconded Definitley the first of those two I think you've nailed that headstock design now matt
