Truss Rod

Looks like I need to recut the angle of the head surface.

After using milling machine 30 years ago  I felt I couldn't live without one and bought one in the 80s.

It's great for so many jobs, 

You guys make great guitars with hand tools, so I feel like this is cheating.

Felt like cutting wood so I guess I'll make a guitar out of scraps I have laying around.

So far I've glued up the neck out of some mahogany shelving pulled out of a dumpster and some maple pulled from grand piano I cut up.

Maybe I'l  glue up some test pieces and see what happens.

I'm starting a new guitar build and was thinking of gluing up scraps of mahogany with 1/8" strips of maple between them, then thought  "could I use  Clear Poly-cast instead of maple?"

Has anybody done this? What type of glue would I use?

How would a neck be with three pieces of mahogany and two pieces of 1/8" clear poly-cast between them? And maybe through the body also.

A'm I looking for trouble?

I've played my guitar with the zero fret for over ten years and have not found any problems with it,

After making a few guitar I always found that getting the nut at it's lowest point was such a pain.

So back in 1976 I used a fret as the first speaking point instead of the nut, I since found that some other guitar makers also do the same.

Makes cutting the nut so simple and the action is at it's lowest.

Plus it makes bending the 1st. few notes easer.

Now for the body and neck.

This mahogany was a dumpster dive from a bank rehab.

Let the gluing begin.

I'm thinking of putting 1/8" pieces of maple in each glue joint, like a pin strip.

Well I just cut in in half., and it's not as bad as I thought!

I guess, Now what shape for the body?

I bought this wood for a topper three years ago and didn't notice the worm holes!

I'm thinking that when I split it for book match, I'm going to have some longe worm holes.

Has anybody worked with this and I would be interested in seeing the results! 

Well for some of us spending a-lot money on an instrument that we want is a tuff sell to our partner, in my case, the wife,

I've always dreamed of a real piano but after playing quite a few I found that I',m talking now at about $12,000 at least. Wife said,"YA Right".

so I thought, I'm pretty good at woodworking so I could pick up an old piano and re-build it!

I got obsessed and over eight years I picked up 13 baby grand pianos and read and tried my best to end up with a nice piano!

I have to say I did learn a lot about pianos.

Now that I'm thinking about building some Guitars, I think it will be cool to build some Guitars out of wood salvaged out of 100 years old pianos.

A lot of the  wood I salvaged is maple  from behind the key-bed and some cross supports .

It will be interesting to see 100 year old wood to produce music again!

Unfortunately the contest is limited basically judged, of course on the photos we put up.

I wish more people voted,  I think @Bizman62 would have Won! Great look great finish.

My finished was not buffed at all and the amp was of poor quality.

I bought a new 20W amp and a Bose 3" speaker for it so, back to the work bench. 

I wanted a computer always setup on my piano but, the wife didn't like the way it looked so I put it inside.

Very nice!

I will be interesting to see the end instrument.

The main issues I've been having with my bills is putting on a Flawless finish. Eventually I just want to get the guitar done.

I was thinking this morning of building a better spray booth.

Looks great so far, very interesting.

I personally think, I you can build a great playing guitar then why not design your own shape.

So far so looking very nice.

Very interesting instrument.

I like to skip the sealer and just use lacquer. to fill the pores, diffidently take a lot more coats.

I like to practice on some scrap pieces first.

The neck is just Mahogany, The frets sure press in easy.

The idea was to keep the cost down as low as possible.
