  1. Oops! Sorry RGGR! I meant to say, Mahogany/maple or WENGE/MAPLE. lol, little mix up. I actually have a Peavey Grind 4 BXP NTB bass with Maple/Mahog Thats what really made me decide I want a neck through guitars, the neck just feels so nice and thin and the neck heel is just heavenly, its a 24 fretter and I can soooo easy get up to Mr. 24 (not Jack Mr. 24) Just so anyone knows, I will not be rushing this, I want to take as much time as it will need, I want it to be just right the first time around, I plan on taking a year or more on this guitar, for two reasons, money, and perfection. And if anyone thinks It'd be a good idea to to some bolt on necks first, I have that guitar I just finished that a new neck wouldn't be a bad idea on, I also want to pick up an epiphone LP special 2 that could use a new neck, its a little like an LP jr, so I'm thinking mabye I can throw a pickguard over the neck pup's cavity and have myself a nice little LP jr. Also, I have an idea about the maple top, I was thinking how on some neck thrus (Carvin) they can cover the neck thru striped with the top, well, I don't want that, I want a piece of maple on either side, with the laminates showing through in the middle, I was also thinking that somewhere I saw a bass or guitar, that had a thin layer of wenge between the mahogany (or whatever it was) body and its top, it looked a little likt binding but better it really pulled the look together for me, so is there someplace that deals with very thin layers of wenge? Mabye 1/8th thick or so? smaller could work to. Hey rs guitar thanks! The stability thing made a big difference for me, I also plan to have at least two graphite rods running down it with the truss ro for greater stability, I live in The Northeast (NH) and the climate here is just murder on guitars, we go from really hot to really cold to rainy to damp, and I need a guitar I can depend on for gigs. (church gigs) my e-mail is easy just take my SN (firefox2551) and add @yahoo.com to the end of it I can't wait to see what you are building! Thanks everyone! All the help is much appreciated! Keep talking to me! Need all the help I can get!
  2. It depends on what mood I'm in I like just about all guitars and there aren't many I'd say "Ugh" too. Favorites are in the "Double Horned" Variety, such as the Ibanez S series, Ibanez JS and Jem (Although the moms thinks playing a Jem in church might look a little funny) The One I'm planning to build will be a slightly modified Ibanez S shape. I Like Les Paul's and Sg's, Explorers, Heck, who am I kidding, I LOVE ALL GUITARS!!!!!!!!
  3. I'll make sure to talk to him when i see him this weekend. I've actually been looking up a bunch of pics on spalted maple and its really really growing on me. Dare I say I hope my maple is nice and spalted..... I also hear some people pay alot for spalt, so I'd be getting some for free, which I don't mind too much. Oh here's an update on my current project! http://www.freewebs.com/messingupaperfectl...icturepage2.htm Its very rough I know, but hey what can you do with limited tools? I had to use a Drill with a drum sander on it for the shaping of the horns. For the rear ones I used a Drill press to cut 4 guide hols then used a plain old wood saw to cut between them, after that it was alot of sanding. I want to pick up mabye an Epi Les Paul Special 2 to work on next. Those are less than $100 used these days.
  4. Ok, I plan on slicing an end off with my chainsaw then cutting it into small board profil chuncks just to see what I'm working with, if I like what I have I know some people in the hardwoods industry up here that might saw it up and kiln it for me. Would that shorten up the whole drying thing? Personally I think anything spalted or burled or anything that looks really "raw" like that is pretty nice looking, I like my guitars to feel like they just came out of the tree, I suppose you could analyze that pshcologially some how but it might not make much sense. Please keep replying people I need all the help I can get with this whole Neck through thing and the log.
  5. My Budget was around $700 or so. But that was factoring in a Kahler trem (no longer getting) A $369 neck. $100 for pickups. So I suppose if I spend about $200 on pickups and go with a Floyd trem it'll even out.
  6. Here's some pic's of the log, in one of them I put my shoe on the end of it so you can see how long it is. Its a Newly cut log (last year or so) We got a bunch of similar ones too, but those are all gone, we bought this wood as firewood and I'd kinda like to save this one as its pretty nice, I don't know how well you can see in the pictures but in a couple places the bark has been scraped off and you can see the figuring on the surface. I'm going to try and get a little cut off the end to see what it would look like in board style pieces. I figure I might not save any money at all by using this log but the experience of making the neck and fretboard and everything myself from a log will be quite rewarding, besides having saved this nice log from the fire.
  7. Yup thats the basic idea for it, I know its possible as I said before I've seen it on strats. What about the other stuff? Built in tuner? Coil Splits? Pickups?
  8. Ok I just went out and looked at it, Its not big enough to make one-piece guitar bodies or anything but two piece would be easy, Its Figured all the way through, VERY curly, mabye not quite AAAA or anything but I never really liked the look of the really stripey maple tops. There is definitely enough there to make bass and guitar neck through laminates and everything, Its about 12 Feet long and around a foot wide. I think at the bass there should be plenty of wood to do a nice bookmated top, if I do that kind of top I would want the laminates to show through so I don't need huge pieces of maple for that either. Should I post a new topic about this?
  9. Thanks! I also do really like the look of the striped laminates running through the wood, Ooh BTW, I have a nice maple log in my backyard with some good figuring in it, I was thinking mabye I could use it for a to, laminates and a fretboard, I'm going to go analyze it today and see if its really any good but if it is, I'm sure it would need to go through a kiln, is there any special process? Can I just bring it to some local guys or something and have them do it? How Long should it be done for? Thanks guys!
  10. Hey guys, In my upcoming build I was planning on using a warmoth Bolt on neck, But as I go over the building in my mind the words "neck" and "through" keep coming up, I love the way neck through guitars feel and sound, but as I read more on building necks I wonder if I could do it. What Kinds of things need to be done to make a neck? I know the basics and have been studying it for a while now, this would be my first ever scratch build and I'd really like to go neck through. I'm thinking mahogany wings and either mahogany/maple or mahogany/wenge neck material, maple board, stainless frets, Floyd nut, undecided on the radius depends, on what floyd system I use, Stainless frets, tilt back headstock, 24 frets. Thoughts?
  11. Hey All!!! What I want to to is have a 3 pickup guitar, H-S-H, I would like to use a 5 position switch with standard strat switching, (Neck, neck mid, mid, bridge mid, bridge) However I also want the ability to go bridge-neck tele style, I've seen strats with a switch or button to keep the bridge pickup always on, this would also allow for all 3 pickups on. And I would like to have two seperate coil splits, one for neck one for bridge, I plan on using only 2 knobs, (volume-tone) So can I install push pull knobs and have the volume be for neck and tone be for bridge? I would also like some kind of built in tuner, I hate having to use stompboxes or plug in tuners, I find that if you are using lights and they go really dim between songs its hard for me to make out what the tuner is doing and I'd rather just look at my guitar and see whats happening, I think I saw a tuner that went in a Strat jack plate and I've seen ones that go on the heel of the fretboard so I'm pretty sure they are at least out there, worst case scenario I have a really nice Seiko tuner that I could mabye modify and somehow incorperate into the control cavity cover, (Rear routed guitar) Also what are some good humbuckers? I'm looking for an overwound PAF style for the bridge and something relatively mind for the neck. Then your basic strat sounding middle single. I was thinking Mabye some Carvin C22's and an Ap11? Lota questions there I know But I'd like to know if my dreams are possible. Thanks Guys!!!
  12. Sounds cool, It probably wouldn't be terribly difficult, you'd just have to build the neck like normal, nut included, put string thru ferules on the headstock so the ball ends have someplace to go. Then using a TOM bridge or similar you would just have an open area behind the bridge somewhere so you can mount tuners. These steinberger tuners look like they'd fit in the space well and you wouldn't have any knobs to fiddle with. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guitar,...ess_Tuners.html
  13. Heavy, like Setch said brighter than a normal LP, all that maple will brighten things up a bit but it shouldn't be too bad as you have a little mahogany on there to contol it a little. Whenever you get into a disscusion about how woods affect tones you'll always have 15 different answers from 15 different people.
  14. +1 The Floyds on e-Shmay are cheapo crap. Between the metal they use in the block to the finish, just bad inside and out, go with some nice saddles. Floyd for looks? Haven't heard that one before......
  15. I like the schaller floyds a bit more because they seem to be a bit more low profile, meaning less routing. Cleaner look. What About the Ibanez EDGE and Low Pro Trems? I see them pop up on Ebay every once in a while. Are those any good? Comparatively, I know VAI and Satch use them and they hit the Whammys pretty hard.
  16. My guitars do that too, mabye not so much that when I spin around they loose pitch though, I use that for slow song with really melodramatic chords. I Just strum, grab the tip of the headstock and wiggle it a little a little bit goes a long way and it adds a little vibrato to the chord, I don't really do it on my Trem equipped guitars, thats what the trem is for.
  17. Ok, Here is the Schaller Floyd http://www.warmoth.com/hardware/bridges/br..._floyd_schaller Now If I use that on a 14" radius neck it should work perfect. Right? And here is the original Floyd, bit more expensive. Which would you say is better? http://www.warmoth.com/hardware/bridges/br..._floyd_original And if I do what you are thinking, the compound board, using a 14" radius Schaller Trem and a Floyd 10" radius nut, would that work or "Should" that work? Also is warmoth the lowest priced place on these Floyds? Thanks guys!
  18. Jester, I'll try calling them. Huh, I don't know why I was under the impression that Floyd used a 14", I guess when you think about it when Floyds where first made and being put on super-strat style guitars with a 10" radius....... Ha ha ha. You may be right about the compound radius being comfortable, I work alot mid fretboard where it would probably 12"-14" key of A, D And E are my favorites. So will the compound board work? with the floyd or would it need shimming? I mean, I can do it, but I'd rather keep it stock. Josiah.
  19. Nitefly, for the floyd. mikhailgtrski, What about the locking nut? Thats my concern, getting the nut and bridge to line up without any shimming or anything. I kinda like the way a 14" feels though, I learned alot on acoustic so I kinda like a flatter radius.
  20. Here's the breakdown on the price of a Carvin neck $159 for the neck, $0 for the maple, $0 for no inlays. $80 for the 14" radius, $80 for the stainless med-jumbos $50 for the locking nut $0 for the unshapen headstock Pretty expensive just for a neck. Thats $369. Now Breakdown on Warmoth Neck. Maple neck, angled paddle, unshapen headstock. $173 Stainless frets, $20 Floyd nut prep, $55 14" radius, $35 Thats about $283, now thats alot better than $370. How much will USACG be?
  21. I actually know all about Carvin, I was going to get one until deciding until to get my own, I priced a neck that would work for me from them, it came to over $360. They are actually using the locking nuts now. They still are using the graphite nuts for the wilkinson tremolo's though. I'd like the locking nut for the peace of mind.
  22. Hey guys, For my next project I think I'll be going with a Pre made neck. I need a few special things on it, maple fretboard/neck, I want Stainless med-jumbo frets, tilt-back headstock, locking nut. I'm probably going to Warmoth for it but does anyone have a better place? Also, I've heard conflicting things about the radius, I want a Floyd, and I'm pretty sure they will only work on a 14" radius without shims correct? Warmoth said somethig about Locking nuts that confused me so could someone clear that up? Also, has anyone tried the Liscensed Floyd from Guitar Fetish? If its not any good whats the best choice for a Floyd. I'll be doing alot of real crazy whammy stuff so I need a good one that will stay in tune. The Guitar I'm building will be Bolt on neck, HSH with extensive switching optons, Mahogany body, rear routed. Thanks guys!
  23. I've always wanted a really versatile guitar, I think in my next build I'll have HSH pickups, with standard strat switching, then a push button to keep the bridge pup always on. so i can do Neck and bridge only, then with two small switches as coil splits, one for neck and one for bridge. so that gives me.... Neck, Neck split, Neck and middle, Split neck and middle. Middle only. Middle and Bridge unsplit. Middle and Bridge split. Bridge only, Bridge split. Bridge and neck, unsplit. Neck split bridge normal. Neck normal, bridge split. Neck and bridge split. All on normal. Neck split, middle, bridge normal. Neck Normal, middle, bridge split. All on, bridge and neck split. You get the idea. Thats Plenty of options for me, reasonably easy to navigate too.
  24. Ok Dude, You are WAAAAAAAY to obsessed with being evil.... If you want an evil looking guitar go buy a BC Rich. or Get a Moser. www.mosercustomshop.com Knock yourself out Unless you want to build your own. Making a guitar that looks evil is all about making it pointy. and usually some strange shape helps too.
  25. Ever consider a Mando-Bird? Electric mandolin with only 4-strings. http://www.epiphone.com/default.asp?Produc...CollectionID=11 I wish I could have had a sweet teenie guitar when I was three..... Lucky Kid.
