  1. Oh man! it looks awesome!! i'm glad more people are building pointy's! hehe, what color would this beast be?
I agree, there does seem like there have been a lot of metal-y guitars lately, and that's definitely a good thing. :D You're project looks awesome. What kind of hardware/finish are you going to put on it? This would look good with an oil finish, or solid color, or stain... it just looks like it will be cool no matter what you do to it! :D Keep up the good work.
  2. Cool, sounds like a fun project. I agree that the horn and the side of the body need a little fixing up. And IMO you shouldn't do a natural finish on this like it is. A cap on top would be nice or something colorful, but the two halves of the body don't match in color, so don't clear over it as it is now (unless you want to of course). Good luck. :D

  3. Thanks for the reply. But that link for reviews seems to be for a different model (Playmate Edge 09 with one passive pickup), this one has two active pickups. Most beginner guitars don't have active electronics, so I though this might be a little better. Any other comments would be nice. :D

  4. Bump, sorry. I have even emailed the dean site and haven't gotten any responses yet. Would anybody recommend trying it, or should I look at ones people actually know of? :D Any comments at all on it would be appreciated.

  5. Hola. I've been looking at basses lately and I came across this Dean bass for pretty cheap. But it doesn't give much information about it, it doesn't even say the scale length. I have searched the internet for reviews for it, but nobody seems to have played it. I have even checked the Dean forums. Does anybody know anything about it? It might not be the best, but would it make a decent first bass? Any help would be appreciated, thanks. :D

  6. :D Yay! I love explorers and can't wait to watch this build. Best of luck to you.

I wouldn't recommend using alder for the neck though. I though of doing that before and searched the site for info. and everyone seems to say that is not strong enough for a neck. But you can find maple for pretty cheap and that is a strong wood for necks...might want to give that a try. :D

  7. Not really my style, but it looks like a good build. That's an interesting shape for the body. And you have some new ideas for headstock shapes too. I give you an A+ for originality. :D How does it feel to play? It looks kinda skinny with the one horn extending quite far, does it balance ok?

  8. I figured it was just another bad idea since it is plywood. But can't blame me for trying to be cheap. :D Sorry, mammoth, I don't mean to keep thinking of other ideas to avoid you. Just trying to think of all options, but when the time comes, I will more than likely be getting a blank from you. I recently sent for a custom quote and your stuff seems nice. :D One question though, on your site it says you have alder and mahogony, are those the only types of wood you have? You wouldn't happen to have basswood would you?

  9. Sorry again for yet another question about suitable body blanks, just trying to consider all options before starting a project. :D I have read that people have used birch as body woods before, so I looked at my local Lowes store since I remembered them having birch. But when I looked at the wood I noticed that it was actually made of several thin strips, like plywood. Could I laminate a couple of these boards to make a decent body, or is a waste of time? I don't mind if the tone is less than great, but would it be strong enough for a body?

  10. Hey, thanks for all the quick replies. I know it is somewhat subjective. But for example, heavy metal guitars usually use humbuckers, don't bass pickups favor any particular styles? I'm interested in learning slap bass if that matters at all. But basically I could use any type of pickups for my bass, it's just preference? Thanks. :D

  11. I've been playing guitar for three years or so, and have recently started craving a bass. I've never played bass, but I like the way they sound, and have been doing a lot of thinking about buying or building one. But I know nothing about bass pickups. What are the different types and what styles of music are each best for? I've searched a lot, but haven't found much info. Stores seem to sell J pickups, P pickups, and humbuckers, but they don't say what they sound like. Sorry if this is a dumb question, any help would be appreciated. :D

  12. You can find some great prices for body blanks(Mammoth has very good prices IMO). You will get a great value as they surface, joint, and prep the lumber for you (and at just a few bucks over "regular" Lumber prices). Well assuming you would prefer a prepped body blank that is ready to go (no waste from defective ends or what have ya).
I figured it was a bad idea... :D But I used that calculator and multipled the bd. ft. x price and it ended up saying about 20 bucks. Thought it would be cheaper than any prepped body blank. But I guess a blank specifically for guitars would be best. I'll need to save up some more dough first though. Thanks for all the replies btw.
  13. I have been wondering about if I could get wood from online lumber dealers, such as Advantage Lumber. I am still confused on how this board foot measuring system works. Would it be possible to get wood that I could use as a body blank? Does it come as separated 'boards' that need to be joined, or am I completely wrong? I searched the forum and didn't find much, but I found this calculator that says how many board feet I'd need. How do they know what dimensions I want with the board feet measurements? Is it okay to do this, or would it be easier to just buy a body blank? Any info to help a poor idiot would be appreciated. :D

  14. :D I am definitely a fan of your work. I've only seen these inlays and that recent frog one, and I am stunned. Making detailed inlays like these takes lots of patience and precision. I have a hereditary problem where my hands shake, probably making it impossible to any detailed inlays, so I truly am jealous when people make such beautiful inlays. Great job, I really like the truss rod cover too! :D
  15. That is incorrect. The only Squire bodies made of plywood is the Bullet series, which are the $99 and under guitars. The Affinity, Standard, and Deluxe series all use solid wood bodies.

Oops. I've heard that squiers were plywood, but didn't know what models. Sorry for spreading false information. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with squiers either. I don't really have any top of the line guitars, but out of my collection, the squier strat is one of my favorites. It seems like a good body, so it should be fine if that's what you want to work with. :D
  16. Welcome aboard! Since there isn't any 'brand' of wood, you are mostly looking for the quality of assembled parts(necks, etc.) And yes, quality does vary quite a bit. Material doesn't matter too much as long as it is decent wood. Squier bodies are made from plywood, and that's not a good thing. From what I hear, Warmoth is definitely high quality. I'm not exactly sure what you are asking, but I hope this helps a little. :D

  17. But the more i read the more I realize how much i messed up on this thing. no one you are the only one who said something. I guess if you dont haev something nice to say dont say anyhing at all and taht would be 200+ people. I dont blame them a kid probably could of done better. But, we all have to start somewhere. I started anouther one this time im gonna go with just a box and see how it sounds compared to the V. Lets hope the next one turns out better and plays just as good. i dont mind constructive critisem. hammer away. im big boy. only way ill learn. Thx for the responce tho, least i know im not being ignored witch i thought for a day or two.
Calm down.....don't be so hard on yourself. :D Sometimes people just miss posts. I think that your project looks pretty cool, I probably couldn't have done better. But you say that this could be better and you're making a new one. That's what building is all about, improving and making your own high quality instruments. Best of luck to you. :D
