  1. Looks BEAUTIFUL! As everyone knows....I'm a bit of a PRS fan, so I admit that I am partial to the shape. But I also love a nice cherry sunburst, and yours looks great! What kind of paint materials/process are you using to get that effect? I can't wait to see this finished. :D

  2. I agree that a captcha might help. I use other forums and there is a captcha form in the registration process. There are little to no spammers on those sites. I don't know how they work, so I'm not sure if PG could add one. Also, that would only work if there were "spambots" as they were called already. If actual people do the spamming, then there doesn't seem to be a solution, other than more mods or "deleters." Hopefully some simple solution can be found though.

  3. Cool, that's some funky looking wood. :D I'm still on the border with zebrawood for some reason...it looks cool and I badly want to use it, but I can't seem to figure out how to mix it into a design. Hopefully yours will be some good inspiration. Can't wait to see this come along, good luck!

  4. I actually like the spalt and all that, I know, I have horrible taste lol

+1 I don't think this is a horrendous guitar. I'm not sure I really like the maple/padauk on the edges, but the spalt actually looks pretty cool. It's good to see something a little out of the ordinary once in a while. Also, I think that fingerboard is awesome (although I would prefer some contrast with the body). Keep up the work, and don't be afraid to show us it when it's finished. :D

  5. I haven't used the humbucker type, but I have an EMG Select P/J combo in my bass. I agree with what was said above...it's not the best, but I enjoy it. If this is for high quality recording you might want something a little better, but I am happy with my pickups. I'm guessing that the humbucker model would be about the same quality as the P/J pickups. Good luck with whatever you decide on!

  6. School's out, now I can finally work on this some more. I got the neck pocket routed so I can attach the neck to the body , though they won't be glued until much later on. The pocket was slightly wide so I had to add a little veneer to make it fit snug. There is still a bit of a gap at the end of the pocket, toward the bridge. Will this be a problem? The neck fits in tightly against the sides and won't slide up anymore, but this gap doesn't look so good. It will be hidden by the pickups but I want to make sure the neck is stable. What do you guys think? Sorry the picture isn't that great.

  7. This is looking great so far, I can't wait to see it finished! :D It looks like you have both the inside and outside of the maple top carved since it looks thin around the f-holes. Do you happen to have any pictures on how you did that process? Carving the inside of a top without poking through looks difficult.

  8. Wow! I think this is a record for the number of entries, and they all look great! Kenny's guitar looks cool, scotty's bass is awesome, Mike's Revelation looks great, WezV's is really nice, and the rest all look great too! Jehle and msherman get extra points for building multiple projects, but they should be disqualified for entering so many cool guitars. Just kidding! :D Seriously, congratulations to all! I really couldn't pick out only one in particular I liked, so I did a null vote. Great work everyone!

  9. It is a messy wood. Man you are forever cleaning that dust, it seems to sneek into every nook and crevis in the shop and likes to stay put. It plays havoc on my sand paper on my drum sander(as bad as Cocobolo).

I have used padauk and the dust does manage to get everywhere like Rich said. Makes me wish I had a nice dust collection system since I had to spend lots of time cleaning when I was done working with that wood. It does polish up and look nice though. Good luck!

On a side note....I am interested in pronunciations, so how does everyone say the word "padauk?" I'm not sure how to say it correctly, so I purposely say it wrong--"paddy whack." :D

  10. Fbasses usually have the tenon extended kind of far, and rather than have the neck woods contrasting with the body, they use a piece of the top to cover the end of the tenon to make it blend with the rest of the body. Not sure I described that very well. It seems complicated to me, but it looks good. Alternatively you could show off the woods (like the warmoth gecko necks do). I think Xanthus is right, that appearance is all that matters. Here is a pic of an fbass to show you what I mean. This is just one idea...maybe it will help?

  11. Looks great! I love all the different layers and that top is cool! Funny that you should call switching to electrics the "dark side" because I find myself slowly switching to acoustics. And welcome to the forum. You'll find that there is a range of talent here, and there are many people, like myself, that are still fairly new to building. It's obvious you've been doing this for awhile though. :D
