  1. I'm not an extended range bassist, but i think that it will be a fretted 6, neckthrought, self wound p-u, bird-eye maple drop-top... My brother ordered me a new project too and i do some guitar repair for friends, so i'll be realy busy this fall! I'll try to do what you're doing; bulding 2 instrument at the same time
  2. I saw your work, your drawing is superbe! (I like hand drawing a lot) The work still progress? I like traditional design too if they are functional. For my next project I will try something a little different and more radical, but there's nothing on paper yet.
  3. Yes! The emperor. Actualy, it's a down-sized version of a jazz-bass with deeper cup-away, i removed .5" all around from the original j-b design. thank! Philippe
  4. Yes! The emperor. Actualy, it's a down-sized version of a jazz-bass with deeper cup-away, i removed .5" all around from the original j-b design. thank! Philippe
  5. Hey! you give me an idea! A magnetic fretboard, a fretted and a fretless one! so you can switch quickly without changing bass! I find this top sexy too and my wife is jeeaaaalous! Check your PM Henrique! Good night! Philippe
  6. This is my last project. A 4 strings J-style bass made with simplycity as usual! The specs: -Schaller bridge -Gotoh tuner -EMG active j-set -EMG BTC system (balance/volume/bass and treble stack pot) -corian nut -African mahogany body -Maple accent veener -Lightly figured Bubinga top (bookmatched) -Maple neck with purpleheart stringer (from a previous instrument) Despite the fact that this bass look realy classic, it have this "in your face sound" with a lot of high-end. Stay tune for my next project! the complete project Philippe
  7. Have you ever played on a 8 strings? I'm doing a fret job on my friend's 7strings and this thing is pretty hard to play! But the F# is addictive! Nice singlecut shape Jon! Philippe
  8. About the truss rod, may i suggest you to put a hotrod from Stemac hot rod . You will be able to add more bow if your neck is too stiff and too straight. On a fretless, a straight neck can lack of sustain because the string do move freely. Unless you want to play with a high action, a little bow is desirable. Philippe
  9. It's going to be a kick *bip* bass Phil! I realy like your veneer pattern (détail très soigné). Lâche-pas! Philippe
  10. If you want to keep the J-J set-up, you can't go wrong with Dimarzio j-set (the one with the black allen-screw) They are splitable humbucker. I can get the fat sound of my p-bass on my jazz (neck p-u soloed).
  11. Another emperor based guitar: Good design choice! It's simply a downscale jazzbass with a tricky lower horn. keep the good work! Philippe
  12. hi Jon, You can order these washer from stemac in the Ferrule (or hardware) section. For the hole, i took a 5/8" spade bit and grinded it to .590". That way, the ferrule fit titght into the hole. spade bit This is not hi-tech stuff but that work! Great basses! Philippe
  13. I read in American Bass (Jim Roberts) that Tobias built a light ash bass with a oil finish that lacking britness. He striped off the oil finish and apply a thin poly coat, the bass gained clarty and brghtness. This is not the key of a sound but it contribute to the ensemble. Perhap, I totaly agree that studio recording technique, applification and playing technique have a lot more to do in warwick bass sound. There a lot of marketing behind the "sound of wood" Philippe
  14. I beleve that a single coat of wax will not let resonate the wood the same way a multiple oil finish will do, but is there a effect on sound... surely nothing like black/white. Oil go deeper in the wood so there are a damping effect on vibration? Philippe
  15. The finish have something to do with the warwick sound. A bass seller told me that warwick only apply a wax coat on their natural finished bass. Try to contact BassCentre MEC pick-up for MEC P-U avaibility. Maybe, did a bolt-on neck will give you a sound closer to a warwick? Good luck! Philippe
  16. A fast way to make a good joint if you dont have a jointer, is to clamp a straight board (hard plywood) on the surface to square, and routing the edge with a template bit. It's good for a body joint (you have to do 2 passes). Philippe
  17. The purple wood is purpleheart (amarante), when freshly cut, it's a kind of purple gray. It's hard on router bit but make strong neck when used as a renforcement. SoundAt11: do you have a pics of this set-neck telecaster? thanks, Philippe
  18. You're right Supernova9, it does a cleaner job and it's faster than routing a another channel. I like the idea of waxing the body... i'll try that on another mahogany body! Thanks Philippe
  19. wood pick-guard... tortoishell pickguard... mmm good option! It look realy fine with the tortoise one! WezV: I put Danish oil (3coats), it's a blend of tung oil/urethan, it seem to resist well to abuse, but will not prevent dent. Thank! Philippe
  20. With or without pick-guard? My choice is without with this chrome ring sold by stemac Ring Philippe
  21. The wait is over, my brother Mat will play his new guitar as soon as he'll be able to came at home! I finished it saturday night, did the fret job, put the string on it and played all night long The sound is realy solid and a little clearer that i'm expecting. The neck pick-up sweap and sing realy well, the bridge pick-up add some bright coloration. I'm not a guitar player, and i cant compare it to a ash tele, but i dig this sound and i will make a guitar like this one for me! I did'nt put the pick-guard yet.. I'll let the choice to the owner to decide. welding job back front I'll post pics with the pick-guard soon, Philippe
  22. great tips guys! I've a lot to learn in electronics! Thanks Philippe
  23. Do i have to ground the bridge of the tele i'm bulding, since a ground wire goes from the volume pot to the P-U's copper plate, and screwed to the bridge? thanks! Philippe
  24. Second Danish oil applied! I think I'll have to apply two more coat because mahogany soak a lot of oil. The body again Headstock (blur pics) Cocobolo?! I just bought these cocobolo board, i think they will do some nice fingerboard and i get them for cheap from a friend. that it's for tonight... see you next time Philippe
  25. The majority of bass cab builder dont go under 30hz. And those one who go below that, need a special processor (Bag-End) to achieved this or use a servo-drive systeme (motor driven speaker). So it can be realy pricey! If i had to build a 3 strings doom bass, i'll build one tuned A-G-C with 3 extra string one octave higer (A-a G-g C-c). The lower A will give a fat muddy tone while the higher one will give definition. Good luck! Philippe
