  1. you would also need at least a jigsaw to rough cut the body blank and some template bits for the router and some other odds and ends just look what some people on this site make with the minimum
  2. im sure it works as a lot of companies/people use it but nothing beats a full copper sheild
  3. use the clothes iron with a wet rag between it and the board there will be less chance of burning the board as with a heat gun
  4. keep in mind wood filler will not stop the neck from bowing into to much relief you have to fill the slots with something solid like "WOOD" its only a matter of time till you figure out what im talking about
  5. i copper sheild all my compartments,pickup routes with copper foil and all of these areas are connected to each other by soldering a wire to each route. and with this setup i am able to remove the string ground at the bridge with no noise here is a pic http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d38/femf...tar/rich002.jpg this also prevents a possible electric shock in case my marshall shoud have any problems as it is a tube amp, i will still get one if i touch the pots though

Pete i take it your getting the same effect i am with this rail pickup? never tried the slide approach but will to see how it works with the amp im using and worse case at $14 its a great little hot pickup and keep in mind how well it worked with a "clean" tone on my sound samples even the high E at the 24 fret worked as a singing harmonic im just wishing i could utilize the phase reversal function but im also watching to see what you come up with

  10. ...Saw that coming. Bleach makes things rust/look old, just make sure you don't leave the parts in there too long. Also I've heard brushing olive oild and salt on metal parts will make them pit and look old. ive never heard of the olive oil trick but i know salt water will work but my thinking is the olive oil would give you a little more control and im sure Perry has the answer remember W.O.M.D

  13. any four wire hum can be tapped and ill look at your switches and tell if you can use your setup as is and if it works now it should with other p-ups but your color code will be differant
  14. what method do you plan on using to install the frets hammerd you will be fine when pressing you dont need a much tighter radius at all

  18. Homemade version. YES! Looking at the basic way the set I picked up is made. A car jack came to mind(effecitvely all the parts would be there* short of a couple bars). I just slapped these together. I have some ideas on how I could mount them to a bench. I will still use wax paper to avoid sticking. I will also probably add cork to the top and back bars(protect softer woods). I will also place a long block at the sides for better pressure spread. Even as is though these would do solid bodies just fine, and can be adjusted down for necks or what have you. As far as steel over wood for the cross bars. I have steel that could be bolted up, but there just is no reason to use it unless I wanted to use 4-10'bars to span the clamps. I would probably still use cork on the bars to protect the wood.   19. Go for B3 hardtail in your first pic as its easier to install the T.O.M requiers much knowledge to install correctly
  20. no in a three peice body the neck should (and usualy does) connect to a solid center running from the neck pocket through the bridge mounting area to the heel with a peice of wood on the each outside of the solid center in a two peice that same center section is split between two halves. seperated by glue wich does not transfer sustain as well as a single peice of wood. when you think about the fact that two peices of wood from the same tree will sound completly differant then it becomes obvious that there will be a change in tone/sustain from one half to the other. now could you hear this differance? no its impossible. to hear that you would have to bolt a neck to each individual half not very practical what im getting at is my answer to the original question does size/shape effect tone/sustain? IMHO it must to some degree as mass has to have an effect try this as a test have someone play your guitar unpluged now place your ear against the body can you hear anything? can you hear a differance from one spot to another? i doubt it but that does not mean its not there i dont think by just listening anybody could say yes or no as there are to many variables to take into account i have thought about making a guitar out of corian just to see 1. how well does it sustain 2.does the shape change the tone i figured corian was prety consistant density wise but to get a 1-1/2" thick peice you would have to glue two peices together and any "air" that wound up between them would alter the results to much from one area to another to be consistant but i still might make one as sustain must be enough for a guitar maybe not the best but certainly better than poplar or bass wood not to mention scratches could be buffed right out as its a solid color
  21. Personnaly, I dont think that glue joint have a damping effect on string vibration since the glue we use are harder that the wood itself. I get more sustain from my multi-lam neck that my flat-saw p-bass neck and multi-lam neckthrought are realy popular for there sustain. Here you will find some 3D simulation about the way a guitar react to vibration. Philippe glue hardness by itself does not equal sustain.make a hole body out of it how will it sound? Multi meaning many, and what types of wood are we talikng about in this case and keep in mind this is a neck that has a fingerboard connecting the lams and screws "Clamping" it to the body and the other case is neck through wich is always better for sustain wether its one or seven peices

Do it because you're looking for change. Experimenting is encouraged! i was not saying do it because they did im saying if a pro has a setup like this there must be some revalance after all why would they put somthing useless in their guitar
  23. how thick are these 7" is wide enough for a strat if the edges are suface joined after a resaw that is very expensive. while they are nice $500 is almost absurd gilmore is a great source never used them but only heard great things about them Exotic Woods company is another not cheap either but not that expensive ebay also has some great sellers. this billet was bought of ebay by a freind of mine he paid $125 and decided he could not handle a build and gave it to me (yes im a lucky bastard) its 8"x23x2-1/2 you tell me if he got a good deal here is a pic http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d38/femf.../Picture002.jpg

Keep in mind density can vary from the same speices of wood thats one reason three identical strats can sound so differant and a three peice body may have more sustain than a two peice as the neck is bolted or glued to one solid section transfering its vibration along a single peice. while a two peice distributes it across the two seperated by "glue"(no help for sustain) now add the fact that density can be differant and youll get less sustain a thicker peice will eliminate flex but at 2" thick there wont be much flex if any and the length of the body does not play as much of a factor beyond the bridge IMHO the best results for sustain are the neck to body construction 1st neck thru 2nd bolt on 3rd set neck
