  1. Don't go and do anything drastic Rick. I know the name is "IPA or Death" but you could run to the store . I suggest Fuller's or Anchor Liberty.
  2. Thank you for the link RestorationAD, it looks like it could be very helpful. It will take some practice to get the techniques down, but what can any of us do well without practice? I'm asking for it with that statement aren't I?
  3. I downloaded the free version of Inkscape and I tried to paste an image and edit it. But not being the most savvy guy at this kind of thing, it's not giving me very good results. What I tried to do is what Jehle did in his tutorial, which is edit the Fender logo to something of my liking. But I'm getting fuzzy lines which won't do at all. Anyone have any experience with this stuff? Am I asking more than this program can deliver or am I just not finding what I need to succeed? Thanks for any suggestions.
  4. I may be forced to go the ferrule route myself, which won't be such a bad thing I guess. But if I could get a hold of (or get fabricated) a neck plate for my N4 project, I would do that first to keep the original look intact. Washburn doesn't sell these and you never see them on Ebay, so all I could do is get one made by a metal worker I guess. Anyone ever have something like this made? I'm not even sure what metal neck plates are made of, brass maybe?
  5. What fine work you do on your guitars. Congratulations on a beautiful Les Paul build. I can't wait to see this one with a finish on it. What kind of pickups are you using?
  6. I found out that the Floyd Rose locking nut has a 10" radius. I planned on having a 14" radius on my fretboard. Is this a bad idea or would it not make much of a difference? Would a compromise of a 12" radius fretboard be good enough? Please, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  7. Great work toneseeker. I think it will turn out to be a great guitar despite your modest expectations. One question: did you make your own drum sander there? Any insight into that project?
  8. Things will turn around for you bro, they always do. I wish you luck and patience until they do. I have to say one thing on selling the guitar: I have regretted selling every guitar I've ever sold. Maybe it's just me and my sentimental side, but the money is gone in a flash and the guitar I loved is never to be seen again. I had a mid-eighties Ibanez Roadstar II and sold it for next to nothing because I was dead set on buying a Les Paul and being the next Slash (Slash don't use no Floyd Rose man). God, I wish I had that guitar again! A few years later I sold the Les Paul for a song so I could get a tube amp to play my Tele through (my Clarence White phase). I regret that too. I understand the Squire is a less expensive instrument than the ones I mentioned, but like the other guys said, you won't get squat out of it anyway. But it's entirely up to you and I hope the best for you.
  9. Nice guitar bro. Reminds me of those older Carvins, especially with a clear finish. You've done some real clean work there. Look forward to seeing the finished product.
  10. Great work Philippe! I love the guitar and the shop. It's often underestimated how important it is to have a clean, well-lit, and organized shop in order to do the job right. I know this firsthand, and not in a positive way . I think you made the right call on the traditional f-holes too. Very classy build.
  11. Wow Andronico, you are one sharp guy! This is a really brilliant project, very impressive. I can't wait to see the end result. Nice work man.
  12. Dude, you're an idiot. 6 posts on this forum, and all of them are generally negative toward all members here. Either you have another user name and are too much of a coward to use it to post stuff like this, or you're just a jerk to begin with. Either way, shut your trap and move on. If you don't like this place then leave, but don't subject everyone else to your inane babbling. Nobody cares. Now stop interupting interesting build threads. Thanks. I think he's kidding brother. You know, sarcasm. I do like your lead-in "Dude, you're an idiot" and the signature "thanks ". Now that's irony. Thirdstone, this is an interesting build. I look forward to seeing your progress.
  13. Interesting question. I'm wondering if you could actually just wire it up as a 2 P90 config with 2 tones and two volumes, then run the HB to one of the sets of controls, and add a kilswitch which will knock the P90s out of the loop. I'm by no means a wiring expert, I'm just spitballing. I'm sure you've looked into the Seymour Duncan website for options too. Seymour Duncan wiring diagrams
  14. Wow. I used to have one of these guitars. A black with purple sunburst finish, coil tap HB, unfinished maple neck and rosewood board. Great guitar and I regret selling it. I don't see why the body is useless now. I'm not saying don't work on a guitar or don't do whatever you want to do. I'm just wondering why you think it's unsalvageable because of a bridge issue. I looked at your Ebay auction and it seems okay. If you just have a hankering to work on a guitar, buy all new parts (body, neck, pups, etc.) and sell the guitar--or keep it. And like someone else mentioned, there are many places that sell cheaper bodies than Stewmac.
  15. Well, I went back over diagram and checked it against my guitar and here's what I found: I used a braided hookup wire to run the ground between my tone and volumes, and it was touching the copper shielding tape in the cavity. I pried the wire up off the bottom of the cavity and now it works great. It sounds pretty darn nice too (SD JB and Jazz combo). Not real thrilled with my finish job on this guitar but it sounds so good, I can overlook that. Thanks for your advice guys.
  16. Have you tried to contact a metal shop to see if they would cut the diamond plate for you? Great progress on the guitar btw. Keep up the good work.
  17. No, they're sitting out there all alone just like in SD's layout. I stopped into Radio Shack today to get some ceramic caps and they didn't have any. Poor selection. I'll have to mail order I guess, just to satisfy my curiosity about the voltage. I don't really know what else to do. I guess I'll go over the whole wiring scheme again and see if I'm just overlooking something.
  18. Seymour Duncan also has many wiring diagrams for all pickups and configurations. This may be the one yo're looking for: http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wirin...tic=2h2v2t3w2sp
  19. I wired up my 2 HB guitar according to the diagram at Seymour Duncan's website, and put .047 caps on the tone controls like it suggests. But they aren't taking any highs off when rolled back, and when rolled completely back they cut the volume out. My question is whether the fact that they are 630 volt caps makes a difference, or if there is something else I'm not doing right? Thanks for any help and insight you can give.
  20. If it's a porous wood like ash, fill the grain. This is one of my biggest rpblems with finishing a guitar. I stink at grain filling and the finish shows it. If this guitar already had a finish on it, chances are it was filled too. But it will be easy to see open pores, and if you have any, fill 'em. Belleville is the birthplace of Jeff Tweedy, singer for my favorite band ever; Wilco. Early Wilco, more specifically .
  21. It was really hard not to vote for Daniel's acoustic--great work man. But that 8 string is so innovative and well executed I had to go with it. The finish really has me jealous. I'm miles behind on the mirror finish factor. Great job by all builders this month. Be proud and play loud.
  22. Just to follow up in case someone else experiences the same problem, I used Behlen's Blush Eraser and it worked like magic. A light mist and the blush is gone. Couldn't be happier with the results. I'm going to keep a can around for every finish from now on.
  23. I agree about Andy DePaule. He's got some great stuff, a HUGE inventory, and is a super friendly and helpful guy. I got him to do an original design of my name because I have never done any inlay at all (and frankly don't think I could with very good results) and it turned out great. He keeps your design on file in case you want another one someday. Blackdog, it looks like a great guitar. Congrats.
  24. Thank goodness. I ordered some last night and it should take a couple of days to get it. I knew better than to spray in such moist conditions so I guess I got what I deserved. Hopefully this will get me out of the woods since I'm almost finished with the guitar. Next time I'll definitely wait for better conditions and have a can on blush eraser on hand to begin with. Live and learn I guess.
  25. I sprayed some nitro at 2pm today and it looked okay. But it's been rainy here and when I checked on it a few hours later, there was significant blushing in the finish. What can be done now to remove it? I put a heater near the guitar just now and I'll leave it overnight, in case that helps. How long do I have to get rid of the blush anyway? If a blush eraser aerosol is the only option, will it be of any use by the time it arrives by mail order in a day or two? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
