  1. Alright all you british, come in out of the cold shed, make a cup of tea and fire up the internet. I've attached this question to the bottom of a topic, but not recieved anything as yet. I need to find a decent luthier supplier in Britain, preferably the Midlands but I'm not that fussed. I'm also after pick up bobbins and magnets (as well as wood and tools). Got a bit of a wait to build the new axe and raise the funds but need to start pricing things up and hitting the research harder . Cheers guys
  2. Put it in the oven!!!! Then tell me what happens I've got a 3 inch thick sycamore wedge drying in the shed. 1 month gone, 35 to go.
  3. I reserve the right to re-open this topic when I'm making my truss rod. I've decided that I want to build the whole guitar myself, probably with exception of the machine heads and tone/vol pots. Unfortunately events mean that the money isn't there at the moment to build the guitar (I've just bought a new motorbike) but as the design is still evolving I'm not too fussed. I will still be asking questions though and experimenting with bits of wood in my new shed (I've just moved in to a new house too) If I plan for twice as long the guitar will take half as long to build with less nasty suprises. Only problem is that I've been playing for years and I'll still be crap no matter how good the guitar is.
  4. You've got more experience than me though and I'm 24.
  5. Nice one guys. I've been playing on autocad over the weekend drinking and having a bit of a and I'm getting close to the final shape already. I'm not going to copy the guitar exactly because then it wouldn't be mine anymore, I'm just going to overlap it onto my drawing to help smooth out some of the more awkward curves. Anyone got any suggestions about those pup bobbins or magnets? Also a good Luthier Supplier in England (preferably the midlands), I already know David Dyke but I generally work on recomendations. See ya.
  6. Alright boys and girls! The final shape of my new guitar project has materialised. I'm intending to base it on the Warmoth WGD body. I keep finding the odd picture of it, but what I really need is a photo of the body with the neck attached so that I can and trace round it in AutoCAD and tweek it. If anyone out there can find a photo of the body with a neck attached could you please post it for me. Or alternatively just the dimension across the widest part of the body. Should have grovelled enough to the bank manager for a loan, so I'll actually have the money to start soon (the furniture for the new house can wait, I can always sit on the workmate). I hope the guitar of the month comp is still open into next year, because I'm coming to get ya. This is gonna be a thing of beauty. While I'm hear, does anyone know where I can buy pickup bobbins and magnets in the uk? Cheers folks!
  7. Alright fellow guitar junkies. While spending one of those sleepless nights trying to solve the little problems which will arise in my (ahem) revolutionery guitar and being the astute mechanical engineer that I am, I've been wondering about a tool that I may need. I've invented a centreline marker that I can run down the fretboard/neck from the nut after it is shaped, and mark the centre line aswell, as the path of all the strings. I was wondering if there was a tool that already does this or if anyone else can see the use for it? It will be very handy for a straight through neck as it will mark down past the bridge. So what do you lot think, useful? or should I make the missus give me more sex so I can sleep at night instead of thinking about tools (no sex and tool jokes, thank you).
  8. Cheers guys, the wood is drying out undercover in the back garden (raised off the floor) and will be tenderly looked after during the frosty months. My appologies for the late reply but I've been away working.
  9. I think I've answered my own questions while I should be working. Sycamore can be used for a solid body and I've found a string on the 2nd page of this forum regarding shapes etc. Cheers anyway guys, no doubt I'll be in touch soon. I like getting paid while I talk to you lot, it's a big screw you back to my boss.
  10. Alright dudes, I'm starting a new project, I've invested in a new biro and 1200 fag packets to draw it on not that I need them because I've had the idea floating around in my head, causing sleepless nights for a few years now. As it's my first project, I rekon that it's gonna take a few goes to get it right. This means that the first couple are going to be done on the cheep (is it cheep or cheap - which does the budgie do?). Anyway, Ive been given a very large block of sycamore and quite fancy using that to build the first couple of prototypes, it's not quarter sawn, it's just a cross section of a tree, infact it's still round. I know that it's sometimes used for acoustics, but can it be used as a solid body? Although it's a prototype I still don't want it to sound crap, just in case the first one is ok. Also, I want to tune the body and neck for maximum sustain, anyone know where I can get some literature on the subject? Cheers geezers PS Brian, if you're ever in England, I think I owe you a pint.
