  1. You could probably do it with a coping saw. Vincent
  2. If you dont want the neck to be so think you could try routhing a small slot in the fingerboard for the truss rod to fit in so that it is raised a little out of the neck, I dont think that would work with an angled head stock though. And for the space between the cavity and the out side of the of the neck that is use it about 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Vincent
  3. Shellac would look nice on a guitar finish. It is harder then tung oil but not that soft relative to laquer, and other hard film finishes. If you were to put shellac I'd apply it as a french polish. You can get a look nicer look with it, but it takes a lot longer to do. And if you dont want it to reflect then all you have to do is wipe on some wax over it and it will dull it out Vincent
  4. I use water based dyes some what often. What I usually do is mix it in a little plastic container with a some what heavy concentration. Then i get a latex paint brush and just spread it on one surface evenly. Then I just wait for it to dry until you see no more water marks. Then just keep putting on coats until you get it however dark you want. I The color can sometimes seem to fade in the first coats. And if you decided to put it alder then you should wet the alitte the night before becuase what will happen is that the wood will stick out some fuzz and then you just sand it lightly off. And if you plan to oil after, make it alittle darker because dye is also oil soluble and it might take some up. Hope this helped Vincent
  5. Thanks for your opinon ill get the truss rod. It is Macassar Ebony and i got it for a good deal like 15$. The reason why im not making fingerboards out of it is becasue wont be making any guitars for a while probably, because my really mom wants me to make a highboy for the house, and school is starting. Thanks, Vincent
  6. I recently found a long piece of ebony for very cheap and I am planing a on making a guitar with a through neck with it. Should I get a truss rod for it, or is the ebony enough. I use light strings so there wont be that much force pulling it. I just dont want to have to go throuhg all the troble of chiseling out the long slot. Vincent
  7. This is the frist guitar i have built and I was very pleased with the outcome. Ash body http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l27/Vince_D/CIMG0354.jpg The neck is Tiger maple with a cocobolo stripe in the middle, brazilian cherry on the sides of the headstock, and a blood wood fingerboard. http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l27/Vince_D/CIMG0355.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l27/Vince_D/CIMG0356.jpg I think is sounds great although is propally the heavest guitar I have ever picked up. I had to make the body with 7/4 stock because of the floyd rose.
  8. I did this just recently and what i did was mixed the a little stain with the wood filler so they would be the color and then i stained the rest of the body. It turned out fine.
  9. An original floyd rose is just a type of floyd rose bridge, so it will be newer.
