  1. True but they are also very hot. Sounds to me like they are just pushing the amp a little harder than his old pickups so there's a little more distortion so I agree w/ everyone who's said he needs to roll his volume back a bit for cleans.
  2. Sounds like it's a coil splitter to me if those pickups are humbuckers. Does it get a little quieter when you turn it on (when it hums)?
  3. I have an old Peavey I got in high school (my first "real" guitar). It has served me well and refinishing it was actually what got me into building/modifying guitars. The thing is it has an unfinished neck which is getting to be pretty gnarly looking. There are several dark spots that have just been getting larger and larger over the years and I'm beginning to worry that it's going to start to actually rot and wear away . It still plays fine now though and I'd like to keep it that way. So what would you do? I'm not sure I'd be able to sand away the blemishes (especially since it is a very thin neck to begin w/) so I'm thinking I might put a dark stain on it to hide the flaws and then give it a few coats of wipe on poly to protect it. It's a maple, by the way.
  4. *did not mean to imply I've ever wound my own pickups*
  5. I don't know. I've wondered the same for if you could just wire them three and three instead of each individual one. Something like a G&L Z-coil only w/o the stagger. (I'm kind of thinking that if this was possible the Z-coil wouldn't have the stagger, but that, I will admit, is just idle speculation.)
  6. That is a heck of a nice lookin' telecaster. I'm curious about the Mighty Mite neck myself.
  7. There are many ways to skin a cat. I like this way. It give you a lot more control of the tones you get when you have both pickups selected, in my opinion.
  8. I saw something similar to that on eBay today. Definitely seems to be of a higher quality than the newer ones. Still, I ultimately just went w/ a small benchtop model. Had to wait for some auctions to go through to get the money so I didn't order it until today. It's definitely a cheapie but I think it can get the job done for my purposes. (It's not the oscillating model I mentioned above. I couldn't figure out if you could turn the oscillating function off. I do well enough w/ a drum sander so I figure I might as well keep it simple).
  9. Fine here too. Firefox 2.0.0.3
  10. You probably want to check Dimarzio's website for the schematics.
  11. Since it looks like I'm gonna end up getting a drill press anyway, what would you all think of something like this oscillating drill press? I can already see it coming in handy for sanding. It's gonna cost a fortune to ship so I think I might end up having to make do w/ what's available at my local mega super home warehouse store (where I might as well set up a base camp for how many times I've been there in the last two weeks). Edit: Shipping from Girzzly for that particular model is only fifteen bucks. I was going by what I was seeing on eBay which was more along the lines of forty since they all do that thing where they make all their money from the shipping and handling fee--unscrupulous if you ask me.
  12. I've had two sets of GFH humbuckers and were pleased w/ both. Very nice pickups and it's nice that there's so many tonal options. I've found the descriptions of them on the site to be quite accurate as well.
  13. That Harbor Freight one I was just about to ask about. Believe me, I would love ti buy a full-sized drill press but to keep it around, I'd have to sell all my amps so I would have space to keep in the living room. I have a friend who has one which I will just have to continue to use for the time being.
  14. Thanks. Not what I wanted to hear but beats screwing up good wood.
  15. My situation is such that a full-on drill press isn't feasible due to space/storage concerns. Has anyone had any luck w/ those drill stands where you put your hand drill into a little device that operates pretty much like a drill press? Will it work to drill holes for tuners and controls at least?
  16. My original plan was a strat-style hardtail. Schaller actually makes one that's adjustable all the way from 2" to 2 3/16" which I think I might go w/. I actually like the looks of it much better than the other bridges I was thinking of and I'm fond of top loaders anyway.
  17. Well--here's what the man at Guitar Fetish had to say: Not real issues- yes the P90 spacing is narrower than USA spaced Fender guitars but the same as the MIM, CIJ, MIA guitars Jay I will take that to mean it's A-OK. (Of course, he is ultimately trying to sell me things so what do you expect? )
  18. Thanks fellas... Another thing that gives me confidence in using them is that Guitar Fetish sells tele pickguards that are routed for p90s in the neck. For some reason, I had a brain fart yesterday and couldn't find the contact email on the Guitar Fetish site but found it today so I dropped them a line. I will let you know what they say if and when they reply.
  19. OK. Multiple choice then. This is a stupid question because: a. Obviously, they will work fine. b. Obviously, they won't work. c. I bet those cream-colored Carvin humbuckers will look even sweeter.
  20. I got my design for my dual p90 tele-style body all drawn out and then realized the p90s I was gonna get from Guitar Fetish were spaced for Gibson guitars. Has anyone tried using these w/ a Fender spaced bridge or know if that will lead to problems? Thankfully, I realized this before I bought any of it (one good reason to draw it all up first). The neck I'm using is a Warmoth Baritone which is 28 5/8" scale w/ a 1 11/16" width at the nut. Using the spacing on a Gibson humbucker it seems like I might be OK but thought I would run it by you guys first. I was considering a Badass-style wrap around for this so maybe I will switch to that which should resolve the spacing problem but does have some issues of its own. (By the way, I think Fender Black Dove p90s are F-spaced, which would solve my problems, but I really have my heart set on cream.)
  21. Nice. I dig the Muddy Waters style knobs.
  22. I was going to ask a similar question myself for my first neck build (which will be a while, working on my very first body now but already have a neck for that). So would you all say that building a neck-through is more difficult only in that there is less fudge room in the event that you screw up something in the design or is there anything that is inherently more difficult?
  23. Thanks for the advice. I'm still deciding on the material for the template but it is going to depend heavily on what's available at the store I go to. I ended up getting that Hitachi router by the way. Pretty excited to put it to some good use.
