  1. is Formby's a legitamate tung oil to use, it's the only one i found at the local harware store and the paint shop.
  2. Out of necessity, my build plan has switched from a direct copy of one of my other guitars to a seven string. Fortunately I haven't bought anything yet. I need to get this done asap so i'll probably just buy everything as basic as possible. Since I need this soon whats the easiest(not alot of steps, doesnt require alot of technique)/quickest finish I can do??? BTW, I just joined the winter drumline (dont get fooled by the name we're playing alot of metal and no marching band music) at my school. Jaws of Life by John Petrucci is basically the entire reason i'll be going through with this. I also need to do a tung-oil finish on a neck/headstock of a kit im doing in a week or two. Brands? Tutorials? Thanks
  3. Yeah I'm all set for templates etc. I don't have to worry about the headstock though cuase I'm not building the neck. Thanks for the replies though.
  4. I never play in the "rock" position... classical keeps the guitar much more stable so when your doing things like string skipping it's much easier to be accurate... at least for me.
  5. The one on guitarbuild.com is an ESP style explorer. I've ruled out doing that and am going to go with the Rhodes V or just copy my other guitar
  6. I didn't see anything deragatory. But yeah I'm pretty surprised that little attachment idea is not a common thing. *reaches for pencil and patent application*
  7. Thanks for the replies. I do really like the Carvin guitar, but I'm getting a second similar model from them (pre painted kit) as I said, soon. What I've thought about doing is just using the distance/placement measurments (nut to pickups, nut to bridge) from the carvin for the Rhodes V, then with some spare wood building a bottom cutaway that I can clamp on to play when I'm sitting. I like the Idea of the V more and more and the idea of the explorer less and less everytime I see pictures. If I make the V and my little cutaway contraption....the only downside would be people being confused at shows if I only brought one guitar. you can't play a satch style ballad on a V.
  8. I started printing off every page I could find that should help me build this so now I'm serious about it. I want to do one of these three Body Designs.... A) Superstart platform DC127 (Carvin.com for pics)... I already have this guitar so I don't need to buy a template or make any design decsions. But once christmas rolls around this'll be my third super-strat if I build it B. Randy Rhodes V... Has the look I really want, but wouldn't be very functional...(sitting down) C) Explorer.... Very cool looking body and has the functionality that the V lacks. BTW I will be making this from a Carvin Neckthrough 24 fret neck and an alder body.
  9. That one is an ESP explorer. I've actually been thinking about doing that or a rhodes v instead.
  10. We had some snow in cleveland two weeks ago. Then it got warm. Then it got cold for a few days. Today...it was warm, and now its cold and rainy. I do not like how this weather is behaving! BEsides, snow is only good for snowboarding.
  11. I've seen that one... It's not neck through, so I guess I'll jsut use the body as a template, then get the distances (bridge, pickup placement) from my other guitar, since the two have the same necktrough neck from Carvin. This is my first guitar build and it's seems like basically all I gotta do is: 1. Make Templates/measure some stuff 2. Cut the body shape out, then cut out the space the neckthrough will occupy 3. Glue the wings on 4. Route for wiring, pickups, etc. 5. Put on a wicked looking finish (still haven't decided what to do) 6. Wire 'er up/drop in the hardware I'm not doing anything really fancy, so it shouldn't be too bad.
  12. Ugh.. can't see the pictures...... and this is what I'm about to begin building for my first guitar.
  13. I'm totally new to building guitars, and am probably going to start one with a carvin neck through neck and a an alder body blank. I think I want to do a textured finish like the Jem7dk's..... Can someone breakdown the process of doing a finish like this, including what materials to use etc? I've heard truck bed liner mentioned a few times for stuff like this. The liner on my Dad's truck is exactly how I'd like it to look, but its pretty thick (hindered sustain?), and has a rubbery, somewhat grippy feel to it. Thanks
