  1. Well, I'm glad to see that The relic idea is unanimous one Like I said in the first post, part of this run will be "distressed", and part will be clean. One may even be a 2 color mirror top. Actually, the distressed ones will look more like they have been through a war. They will have some dents & primer showing, some airbrushed rust, and possibly some neon green radioactive material "leaking" from under the vol knob, bridge & pup. I was even thinking of changing the pickup to a yellow & black Dimarzio D-Activator X DP222. I would cover it with one of these plastic covers: The cover will have large sections burned away, exposing the pickup underneath. This will be the first batch run Ive ever done. I already have 2 spoken for. The one in this post is a prototype to work out the bugs. The actual batch pieces will be set a neck that is painted. To speed things up, I changed the neck on the prototype to a strat style bolt on neck. It will still have the 12th fret inlay. I should have updated pre-paint pics tomorrow.
  2. No tailpiece on this one. It will have string furrels in the circular raised part right behind the bridge.
  3. Ya know...I'm thinking the same thing. It plays good, but I may end up making a new neck with a 3x3 HS. That's what I get for not sticking to the original plan.
  4. Did a little more carving. I still have some roundover & sanding to do. http://parableguitars.com/ptnuke/ptnuke4.jpg
  5. 12th fret inlay. Yellow pearlessence & ebony inlaid in a ziricote board. The board will have black binding w/ yellow side dots:
  6. Thanks guys I'm really not a skull kinda person...so I doubt I'll do any of those. I've always been a fan of the old school "stylized" flames though. Just something about them. I used to do custom paint & pinstripe work back in the 90's. I guess I did enough flame jobs to get hooked on them. This nuke design is one that I pitched to the Jackson CS a while back....but they didnt bite on it. I was kind of surprised actually. I've done some design work, and a few mirror tops for them as well as some FB inlay. I desighned & cut a 12 piece inlay run that is suppose to hang at the winter NAMM show. They inlaid them there...we'll see if they get them done in time. Anyway, here is an updated pic. I did a little carving tonight. There is still a lot of carving to do, but this shows a little better how the finished piece will look.
  7. Particle board is consitered an "open cell" material, so the vacuum comes through it. If you have a small piece placed in a large zoned area, you can block off the unused section of that particlar zone with a closed cell material like a laminate, or plexiglas.
  8. This is a design idea I have been working on for some time now...thought I'd share. The model is the Parable "prophet". It's the main shape that I build. The added twist is a 3D radioactive symbol. I'm running these on the CNC, then hand carving the tops. It's the best of both worlds IMHO. I'm a Stryper fan from way back...so I couldnt resist. When it's finished, the edges of the design wil taper to meet the recessed areas. And of course, it will be painted yellow & black. Specs: Parable "Nuclear Prophet" Alder 3D body w/ yellow & black paint Single hum EMG81 recessed TOM Bridge Strat style maple BO neck w/ Ziricote board 12th fret "nuke" yellow pearlessence & ebony symbol inlay black hardware Gohtoh tuners This will most likely be a 12 piece run. I ran 2 today to work out the bugs before I run the rest. Part of them run will be "distressed". And part will go to Mike Learn (possibly) for some custom airbrush. Here is a youtube link of the design in ArtCAM: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBokjWteQGE
  9. I've finally been able to log some "quality" time on the CNC. It's been up and running since mid May, and the clamping system still amazes me. It's a simple vacuum. The cool part is that it uses regular particle board for the "spoil board". The table has zones that can be turned on and off. This is a video of a guitar blank on the cnc. It shows just how well it holds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFxz9NXEFrA
  10. I thought about going with a flame or quilted maple in alder, but I had a couple 12" wide pieces of padauk laying around. I like the natural contrast of the two woods. The padauk has some really nice flash in direct light. The main reason I didnt go with a padauk fretboard is because the color under the clearcoat appears darker, and over time it may brown up some. I have the final assembly about 90% complete. I'll post pics when it's done.
  11. Flames inlaid in the alder body blank before sanding. I used black epoxy to give the design a black pinstripe outline.
  12. One piece 1/4" thick laser cut Padauk flame inlay
  13. Here is the body blank in the laser, cutting the pocket to accept the flames
  14. This build has been in the works for over a year...One of those "on the back burner" projects. I dusted it off long enough to finally finish it. Here are the specs: Alder body with a one piece padauk inlaid flame design Recessed TOM bridge Strat style neck with matching padauk HS inlay One hum/ one vol layout Gohtoh tuners Black hardware The original idea was to have a padauk fretboard & HS that flowed into the flame design, but I decided to use a strat neck with an ebony board instead. I also decided to go with a TOM bridge instead of the floyd. Here is the original artwork:
  15. My experience with purpleheart is that it turns darker purple over time. I had some pieces that I let sit for several months...they were a nice dark purple. When I cut & sanded them, they turned to a lighter brownish purple. I asked my local wood guru about it, and he told me the purple color is enhanced with oxidation. When the wood is first cut, and the moisture content is high, it is more brown. Then, much like an apple turns brown, it quickly oxidizes to a purple color. If you seal it, then air can’t get to it to oxidize it further.
  16. Not really my thing, but these may help: http://www.fretlord.com/
