  1. I don't plan on trying an all-access joint (especially on my first project). I also don't plan on hollowing the entire guitar like Bear did. I just want to route a cavity in the top half of the guitar and a bit behind the bridge (like I've seen in an X-ray of a PRS somewhere on this forum) to lighten things up and (if I'm lucky) provide a bit more interesting sound. This way I'll also get to have one of those nifty-looking f-holes
  2. I'm not stuck on using the Duplicolor paints if someone can recommend something better....
  3. I've ordered a Saga strat kit, so it's time to start messing things up I find that standard neck joints really get in my way. I don't think I'm ambitious enough to try to convert it to a "all-access" style joint (unless you guys tell me othwerwise). Has anyone tried thinning/angling the heel? Along with converting to a fixed bridge and partially hollowing the body, this should provide MORE than enough learning experience for my first project.
  4. I've ordered a Saga strat kit, and although I'm a long way from thinking about finishes, I'm still going to ask. My lack of wood finishing knowlege should be apparent I'll be using Duplicolor enamels, since they seem to be available and I found a color I like. Now for the questions: what sort of sealer and/or primer should I use? What sort of clear? How many coats of everything? How much should I sand between coats? Now on to the neck: I don't like gloss neck finishes, so what is on the necks that feel like bare wood? Obviously they aren't left bare - tung oil maybe? What about the fingerboard? I'll be stripping the neck (they come with a gloss finish from Saga) and I figure I might as well strip the fingerboard while I'm at it. What are fingerboards usually finished with? Mine feel like some sort of satin polyurethane. Help!
  5. In my experience, the guns seem to be higher wattage. You can, of course, get high wattage pencils as well. Basically, they heat up faster, and get hotter, which is nice for soldering to big pieces of metal, but can create a problem with smaller parts.
  6. I have the same problem. My picks also like to fly out of my hand while playing. In the past, I've used Dunlop "Gator Grip" and "Ultex" picks because they are more grippy. However, recently I've moved to the small, pointy nylon "Jazz" picks - they are definately faster and give me smoother attack. I tried drilling holes in picks to get a better grip, but that felt too weird. The only thing that I've found to work is to scuff the pick with sandpaper or to score it with a knife. Good luck!
  7. Wow...it's so good to know I'm not the only one with this problem. I can definately hear it more with hotter pickups, but it seems to be there all the time. I've found using smaller and sharper, pointy picks seems to help a bit, which led me to believe it was my (sloppy) technique. When I get a chance I'll have to experiment with lowering my pickups and moving my picking to a different spot.
  8. I've got to ask: how do you guys get back plates to fit sooooo perfectly?
  9. I was looking around today, and I realized that I can get a Squier Affinity strat for just about what I'd pay for a kit. Now the question is: is the hardware, etc on the Squier better quality than the hardware on the Saga kit?
  10. I like the idea of a kit, and possibly customizing it a bit. Are the Saga kits "decent"? I wonder if I could take down top of the body a bit and still do a hollow body. Time to find a friend with a planer and plenty of spare time
  11. I'm just beginning to plan my first guitar project. My woodworking skills are limited to basic carpentry, nothing that compares to this. I definately need any advice I can get Here are my planned specs: Mahogany body, modified Strat shape, chambered, HSS Mahogany(?) cap, 1 f-hole Maple neck/rosewood fingerboard Wilkinson bridge Graphite nut/locking tuners I plan to buy my first router for this project, and I hope to do all other shaping with hand tools and a belt sander. I plan to buy a body blank and a complete neck (I don't feel up to constructing a neck yet) Does anyone have any words of wisdom to offer? Thanks!
