stevenh Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 Here is a Warmoth Les Paul body that I'm going to finish. As you can see, it has a great flame maple top, but it has a mineral streak in the finish. The sides have some fogging in the sanding sealer, and the back has a little spot of grain filler that's a little thick. I'm going to paint the back and sides black, mask off the maple on the side for a faux binding effect, and stain the top trans blue. It will have chrome hardware on the guitar when it's finished. http://www.ofoto.com/PhotoView.jsp?&collid...id=261935958105 http://www.ofoto.com/PhotoView.jsp?collid=...y=1101160964260 http://www.ofoto.com/PhotoView.jsp?collid=...y=1101160964260 Quote
stoo Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 Hi Steven. I've got a Warmoth Lp double cut coming soon ( I hope :-)). Are those imperfections the result of a previous owner or did it come from Warmoth like that? Was it unexpected? Mine will have a quited maple top on a mahogany body. Maple is gonna be green dye but I haven't decided on the back yet. Keep us informed on your progress!! thanx stew Quote
AlGeeEater Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 cool man, take your time and ask questions! Quote
stevenh Posted November 24, 2004 Author Report Posted November 24, 2004 Applying the Sanding Sealer is just about done. One more coat will do it. Then, I will mask off the sides and back, and stain the top a medium blue. All of the finishing materials I'm using come from the Reranch. That is top quality stuff. The Sanding Sealer is their Nitro Sanding Sealer. I will post pics very soon. Quote
whoofnagle Posted November 25, 2004 Report Posted November 25, 2004 Very nice looking. I am in the process of getting ready to paint my first guitar. It too has a maple top and mahogany back. I was trying to figure out what to do with the sides (maple portion). So if I understand you plan on taping the sides of your top, thus when the back and sides are painted you will have a faux binding look (the maple portion)? Is this as simple as taping the maple side? Will you have to apply a clear coat or something over the maple? Progress pictures would be helpful. Bill Quote
stevenh Posted November 26, 2004 Author Report Posted November 26, 2004 I will tape off the back and sides, and leave a natural finish on those parts of the guitar. I'm putting the stain on today, and I will post pics. Quote
stevenh Posted November 26, 2004 Author Report Posted November 26, 2004 Here is an updated pic of the guitar after I dyed the top blue. Check out that flame! http://www.ofoto.com/PhotoView.jsp?&collid...id=437068968105 Quote
darren wilson Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 Wow... that's gorgeous! Are you going to do a burst around the edges at all? That might help disguise the mineral streak. Quote
