mkat
Hi, I'm making a fretless jazz bass. I have the body and the neck. The neck has frets in it, which I'll remove and so on, but the width at the end of it is slightly larger than the neck pocket on the body. What's the best way to make the fit? Shave the body or the neck (since it will be fretless this should be too bad I suppose)? Also, please add any comments on the best way to do the job so I have a reference point. Regards, Michael
westhemann
shave the body...leave the neck alone or else you could end up with a visible difference along the length of the string. BUT your problem may be due to paint in the neck pocket...how much too wide?just a hair? do it neatly...you want a tight fit
mkat
Yes, it's just a hair. So, which side of the pocket should I shave, the left, the right or a bit of both? Regards, Michael

Regards, Michael ← WHOA BUDDY!!! bit of both....it is VERY important that the neck still remain centered and that it points in the right direction...do NOT shave only one side
thedoctor
I wrap 150 grit paper around a rectangular file and do both sides SLOWLY. You want a good straight fit but, as ED and I talked about in another post, don't forget to allow for the paint!
