Pickup Cavity

Recommended Posts

Assuming you mean hard mounting the pickups directly to the wood with nothing in between, that's an intangible. It doesn't take into account the fret height, action, and most of all, your sonic preference. Also all SD pickups are not the same height, and the screw pole pieces are various depths, too. You have to build the guitar and then go from there. You can route the cavity to the approximate depth and then go back when you're done with a pattern cutting router bit to deepen the cavity to the exact height. If you were going to use foam to make the pickup slightly adjustable then it doesn't matter. Just measure it, and add 1/8" to the depth to accomodate the foam.
