Sneft Posted April 8, 2005 Report Share Posted April 8, 2005 a friend of mine is restoring an old guitar of hers and wants to get rid of some spray paint thats on her guitar. it doesnt cover very much. She doesnt want to damage the original finish so sandpaper is out of the question. it has a clearcoat on beneath the spray paint. are there any stripping chemicals that can take of the spray paint(the usual stuff you find in those little shake cans) and not damage the underlieing finish? LGM Guitars Posted April 8, 2005 Report Share Posted April 8, 2005 probably not, you can try putting a good sticky tape over teh spray paint and if you're lucky it will pull off the finish. The problem with any strippers, is you don't know how it will react to the original finish. Best case scenario it will probably dull the finish. Doc Posted April 8, 2005 Report Share Posted April 8, 2005 Don't even think hard about strippers. They'll all screw up the clear. Take some either grey or white (if you can find it) Scotch Brite. Don't use the red or green, too coarse. Scrub the paint off using "Goof off"as a lube. You can find that at any place that sells paint. if that doesn't budge it try mineral spirits. Wipe it down good. Buff it back up to gloss with rubbing compound. If you're lucky it will come right off. If you're not it will, worse case, you'll get some craters where the paint has etched the finish, and you'll have to buff. Most guitars are finished with stuff that paint doesn't really like to adhere to so cross your fingers. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Maiden69 Posted April 8, 2005 Report Share Posted April 8, 2005 If the paint is poly, like the automotive paint that LGM uses, you should be able to use gasoline or naphta to get the spray paint out. I did this on a 1966 VW dragster painted by Pete Santini in Cali and it turned out great, the gas won't damage the clear coat, believe me, we wouldn't even tried to do that on a $6,000 paint job.
