Hughes
would it matter if i copied the spacing of my ibanez bass neck and lets say i was a tiny bit off, would that effect anything?
Devon Headen
That depends on your definition of a little bit. You'd never get it right from an existing board. The taper will throw the distances off.
Hughes
so when i use a fret calculator can i round it off instead of eg:2.1334420
GregP
Round it off to how many decimal places, though? Obviously there's room for some very very small 'error' (who in the world can measure to a hundred-thousandth of a millimetre?), but unless it's as precise as you can possibly make it, it won't sound good. Devon Headen
With the ruler I have, I can get accurate to .005". I've done fretting quite a bit less accurate than that that played in tune, though. Like with some frets being a 64th or even nearly a 32nd off. If you measure from the nut instead of fret to fret you won't get cumulative errors.
terbo
I saw one fret calculator that printed out a diagram of your fretboard for you with marks on it for frets and the bridge and nut. How accurate would that be? Andy
Devon Headen
That's what I used when my fretwork wasn't too accurate. I don't recommend it. It either didn't print accurately, or it moved after I printed it. Plus I had to splice a couple pages together. Way too much room for error with that process.
