Pickup Help

Recommended Posts

i just got my strat back from the music store today and was playing hells bells to test it out. i put my pick selector on just the neck pick up and played it sounded ok. i tapped on the wood just above the neck pickup and it sounded through the amp. in fact if i tap anywhere on the body its self while just the neck pick up is on i get the same thing.

my strat is a $170 ibanez gio strat with the orginal powersound humbuckers in it. it is my favorite feel wise but not sound wise. ive had it for about 6 years.

is there anyway to figure out why its doing this?

any way to stop it?

if i put new pickups in it would that go away or is it set in there?

thanks for any help.

Seems weird...

if it's gone microphonic with loose windings you'd think

it would feedback like crazy at high volume

Is it noisier than the other pickup? Is it still humbucking?

Is the scratchplate loose?...is the pickup sitting nice and solid?

If it's not feeding back through the amp maybe you could isolate

it from the scratchplate somehow..

Seems weird if the other pickups aren't doing it and it's not feeding back

When you say you can hear it, what kind of noise is it making? Amplifying the actual tap sound? If the other pickups aren't doing it, it can really only be the pickup itself. It may be microphonic and you just haven't played at high enough levels for it to feed back much.

Potting your own pickups is easy (though not necessarily "quick", it was a 2-hr project for me, though an experienced person should be able to do it in less), and if it's microphonic that's your cure right there.

Hi Jera,

Sorry, when you said you were playing "Hells Bells' to test it,

I was under the impression you were playing really loud...heh

Potting the pickup involves immersing it from the top down, in melted wax, and letting the

wax work into the coil winding..this stops the wires vibrating if they're a bit loose...

I've never done it so it's probably better to get Greg to explain...he's done it before

Good luck with it...
