bzdup
I hope someone can help me. I sprayed my volume pot on my preamp with Caig Deoxit. I turned it back and forth a couple of times. I sprayed inside the pot, was I supposed to do that? So now the pot doesn't even work. When I adjust the volume and what not it doesn't change anything. So I 'm screwed now, right? lovekraft
You're probably going to have to replace that pot. As I remember, that preamp is pretty tight, so unless you've got a fair amount of experience with electronic repair, I'd recommend taking it to an amp tech. And lose the can of DeOxit, and get some old-fashioned TV tuner cleaner at your local Radio Shack - it won't strip the barnacles off a ship's hull, but at least it won't screw up your pots. Yeah, it is pretty tight. My parents put together computers, I was thinking about taking it to one of their techs and seeing if they can fix it. So the deoxit is crap, huh? Some people swear by it some say it kills pots. Why does it kill pots?
lovekraft
Well, it doesn't kill all pots (it probably doesn't kill most), but it's definitely killed enough for me to just avoid it. Tuner cleaner doesn't, so it's my choice.

Another thing, Are you supposed to spray inside the pot where the parts are moving?
lovekraft
No, you did everything right, spraying inside the pot is the only way to get cleaner to the element - you just learned about DeOxit the same way I did! Older carbon composition pots seem to be pretty much immune to it, but a lot of newer pots, especially those with conductive plastic elements, simply can't handle whatever solvents are in it. That's progress. BTW, DeOxit works great on metal contacts and open frame switches or relays (at least in my experience).
Gemleggat
Those things in the JMP are sort of not pots anyway, more rotary controllers. Use servisol or other normal contact cleaner. The stuff you using is to heavy duty, use it on your starter motor or something.
lovekraft
Not disputing your word, especially since it's been quite a while since I've even seen a JMP-1, but are you sure? For some reason, I thought the volume pot was a standard dual-ganged log pot, about 10K or so.
