MarkM
Hello all, I have a Fender Squier that I bought a few years ago just to take apart so that I could do the body in 3D for a project. I’m working on putting it back together cause I went to learn to play. I know were must of the parts go but I’m stuck on a few things… I have three Tremolo springs; I guess one goes in the center and one on each side at the very end correct? I also have 5 small springs that I don’t have a clue were they go (images attached) Are there any adjustments I need to do for how the bridge sits? There are 3 of these springs... and 2 of these springs Thanks, Mark Edited February 1, 2006 by MarkM
Nitefly SA
the trem springs go like this:one in the middle, the other two where ver, or just use two, it doesnt matter but try and make it symmetrical those springs are for the pickups, they go between the pickup asnd the pickguard, if you have 5 that means you are missing one
MarkM
wow that was quick, I just posted this a few mins ago….Thanks for the reply… That’s what I was afraid of that I lost a spring… Is there a reason why they look different? Also any suggestion were I could buy the missing spring at? Thanks, Mark Edited February 1, 2006 by MarkM
Nitefly SA
it isnt really a ncessary part as long as you have one spring holding the pickup down you sould be alright, also, make the pickup with one spring the neck , you are least likely to hit it while picking heres a link to the springs if you want em http://guitarelectronics.com/product/SPRING6S
MarkM
Ok great… just one more question… Do the springs go directly between the pickguard and the pickup or do they go between the pickup and the pickup cover? Also is there any good technique for getting it screwed down with the spring… its giving me a little pain. Thanks, Mark
Nitefly SA
the pickup cover has wings with a hole in either one, put the springs on top of these holes, then the screw through the pickguard, throught the holes with the spring in between them, i hope you know what i mean
marksound
The screw goes through: a. pickguard, b. spring, c. pickup cover, d. pickup. Save yourself some headache and get a replacement spring before you put the thing back together. Any music store worth its beans has at least one box of old parts somewhere. Be nice to the guy behind the counter and he'll probably just give you one. If nothing else, take a clicky pen apart and steal the spring. You'll probably have to cut it down a bit, but it'll work. MarkM
OK great, got every put together and I cut down a spring from a pen…nice suggestion I take it you don’t tighten the pickups all the way, cause when I did they were hitting the springs. So I loosen them a little and they went down, is it ok they have a little play in them now? Only problem I’m having now is when you hold down the first two frets the strings hit the other frets. Do I need to adjust the bridge or something to fix this? Thanks, mark
marksound
If you have everything bolted together, it's time for the setup. Tutorials here.
Stickmangumby
The idea of the springs is so that you can adjust the height of the pickups to where you want them. The higher they are, the more output they will give, but the more likely you are to hit them with your pick or with the strings when playing. Get into the link marksound gave for guitar setup tutorials.
Nitefly SA
i got flamed for that, the closer the pickup is to the strings the narrower the magnetic field is and it doesn't pickup as much as it would if it were a little farther away
Stickmangumby
But surely what it does pick up will be of a higher output? I mean, if the magnetic field were narrower (ie the string vibrations moved past the boundaries of the magnetic field) then some frequencies would be cut off, but the strings vibrating closer to the magnets would mean more current was induced into the electro-magnet, and so the signal leaving the guitar is greater? Have you got a linky to the said flamed post or other info about this? Thanks
