Metal-j Posted August 27, 2006 Report Posted August 27, 2006 Is it possible to make a King V with the ends coming to a pointed spike instead of the blocky pointed edge. The reason i ask is i want to know if there would be any problems along the way of building it. Metal-J Quote
Metal-j Posted August 28, 2006 Author Report Posted August 28, 2006 Nobody? Im a semi-newb to building guitars. Quote
MidnightLamp Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 (edited) I don't see why not? If you're building a custom body you can do anything! Has it been done before, probably: Alexi Laiho Signature That's not a king V, but you get the idea...either way, the technique invloves using a Chamfer bit: Chamfer Bit Alternatively, you can just do it by hand with a rasp, sandpaper, and a lot of patience. Metal-j Posted August 28, 2006 Author Report Posted August 28, 2006 The only thing im worried about is the tips of the spikes chipping off. Quote
skibum5545 Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 Any sharp point is liable to chip. However, in this situation, you've got the grain running down to the tip of the spike (not across it) so that adds a lot of strength. Just be careful when handling the thing, and use a nice, strong wood. Quote
Prostheta Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 I've often pondered on how to strengthen tips. Would using CA or epoxy as grain filler prior to finishing impart any significant additional strength to the wood's grain structure? Quote
erikbojerik Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 Here's an inspired metal-design freebie*. Cap the tips with metal. Think steel-toed cowboy boots. Then hone an edge on 'em... *First recommended to Metal Matt about a year ago. Quote
Metal-j Posted August 29, 2006 Author Report Posted August 29, 2006 I think i might go with the metal tips. Does anyone know where i can find the dimensions on a king v? Quote
