erikbojerik
I'm new to the whole inlay thing. When routing for inlays, do you guys work on the fretboards before or after they're glued to the neck? Which is easier, or does it even matter? I'll be going for a 12" radius, so i'll most likely inlay flat, then radius-sand. thanks!
weezerboy
why don't you check out this link. its a full tut. its generally bests to leave the fretboard on the neck (as its easier) but i can't see any real problems in doing it before attachment. dan
Clavin
It's just as easy on either. Maybe a little more when the fretboard is on already. That way its already sized, etc.. Craig
daveq
One thing to consider is the possibility of screwing it up. If you do manage to mess things up to the point where you need to start over, if it's already glued to the neck - you're going to have some trouble. If it's not glued to the neck and things go well during the inlay process, there's also the possibility of screwing up the process of gluing it on to the neck and shaping it. I think the odds are better for me to screw up the inlay than the gluing it to the neck. That's why I prefer to do the inlay before doing anything else with the fretboard. If I do mess things up, I just have to swallow the price of another fretboard but I don't have to spend hours trying to remove it from the neck - or worse, build another neck just because the inlay went bad.
