axxion
What is the main difference between 12, 14, 16 and 18 gauge speaker cables? Any opinions on the best cable for loud, high gain metal-ish playing?

axxion
The main difference is the gauge No Kidding? I meant: what is the tonal difference?
Maiden69
Unless you are an oscilloscope or a spectrum analyzer I doubt you will hear any "tonal" difference. The bigger the gauge the more current it will be able to handle, other than that, anything above 16 should be good.
theitalianrob
in speaker cables the higher the gauge the better off you are, but id say 16 or 18 is perfectly fine for any player, i use a 14 gauge cable and i never had any problems. this website explains this very well, http://www.guitarnuts.com/technical/cords/index.php
aidlook
I've heard higher gauges often cause the electrons to feel lonely...That can't be good for sound.
black_labb
higher gauge is actually smaller. but 18 is perfectly fine, so would the others be
fryovanni
How much power are you pushing through the cable, and how long is the cable? Actually is this a speaker cable or instrument cable? If you are running high power amps to mains or subs gauge will become important, especially if the length of cable is great. Daniel Sorbera
Just to clear this up, the higher the number the smaller the wire (ie 24 gauge is smaller than 18 gauge). You should be fine with anything from 14-20 gauge. You won't hear any tonal difference if it's a high quality cable/wiring.
