pilotfish Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 Hi! I want to replace my fretboard and have found a donor, the scale is the same but the new fretboard is a bit thinner then the original. If I use it straight on my action would be higher then it is now. I dont want that so what can I do? Use higher fretwire? Is it possible to shim the fretboard by glueing a thin piece of some material between the neck and fretboard? Any thoughts on this? Thanks! /Tomas Quote
al heeley Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 Could you drop the nut and lower the saddles? Shim the neck pocket? It's a huge hassle having the frets replaced. Quote
pilotfish Posted January 17, 2008 Author Report Posted January 17, 2008 I should have said that it is a Ibanez rg with locking nut and floating trem. I guess I could lower the trem somewhat but dont know about the nut... Quote
al heeley Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 Then I woould look at sandwiching a thin veneer of wood between the neck and the new fretboard to build it up back to the original thickness. How much are you talking about? Quote
pilotfish Posted January 17, 2008 Author Report Posted January 17, 2008 I think that sandwiching a thin veneer would be best as it is a bit more then 1 millimeter or 0.04 inch (I dont use inches so that might be wrong ) Quote
scab Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 i guess, shim the fingerboard. the question is: why the heck do you want to replace the fingerboard? and if you did, why wouldn't you find one of the same thickness? odd combo you got goin' on here. l8er Scab Quote
