Metalhead28 Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 I'd like to do a one piece wenge neck with a macassar ebony fretboard. For the top I have some pretty nice quilted maple that I want to dye a dark brown. What body wood would you use for this combo? From both a tonal and an aesthetic point of view. Quote
Metalhead28 Posted March 3, 2009 Author Report Posted March 3, 2009 By the way, I'm thinking walnut...but I'm still totally up in the air. Quote

avengers63 Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 The neck will be dark, the top will be dark. You're already tinking walnut, so the body will be dark. From an aesthetic viewpoint, I think that'd be really dark. No contrast or interest visually. But then again, I'm a big fan of high contrast. My art teacher pounded it into our heads: variety creates interest. All dark = no variety. Think about some white limba for the body. The tone is similar to mahogany and it'd create a visual difference. Maybe some cream binding around the body. If it's a dark f/b, maybe cream binding on it as well. Of course, if they're both bound, you have to do the headstock as well, just for continuity. Quote
erikbojerik Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Mahogany and limba both have a similar warmth to them tone-wise - walnut has a little more bite IME. All are readily available in the thickness you need, which is around 1-1/2" (limba may be the hardest of the 3 to find). Quote
