marko_slash
Hi, I've made all of the parts of the vine inlay for my jem, all but center line. How to make it? I don't think it is possible to hand make it from pearl shell, because it always breaks...any help?
Jaden
the jems dont have a pearl vine stem, its a wood of some sort, I usually cut a strip of mahogany for the stem.
Bmth Builder
Well if you made an individual peice for every fret you'd only ever need a peice of shell about an inch long, I doubt that would break that easily.

Yeah, that's what I though... But it's very hard to get them 2mm thin, damn shel always break. I already quit of doing it from shell, I now think about doing it from contrast veneer. Maple seems as a good choice, but it needs to be finished, will it be problem?
ae3
Maple seems as a good choice, but it needs to be finished, will it be problem? Does your fretboard need to be finished?
marko_slash
Maple seems as a good choice, but it needs to be finished, will it be problem? Does your fretboard need to be finished? It is rosewood, and it needs to be covered with something, which someone could tell me it is...
RAI6
Rosewood does not need a finish.
marko_slash
I though it needs to be wiped with some lemon oil (I don't remember exactly...)
RAI6
Well, oiling a fretboard (Rosewood, Ebony, etc), doesn't really fall in the category of "finishing". Those woods are naturally oily, but can dry up. By wiping them down with some oil, you're simply bringing them back to their glory.... marko_slash
So, when I build a guitar from scratch, I just need to sand it with some high gradation, and that's it?
RAI6
How far you want to take it is up to you. I've seen guys on here take their ebony boards to almost gloss by just polishing the crap out them...
