J_48_Johnson
My question is pretty simple. I'm building my first guitar with binding. Do I scrape the binding after each coat of primer and color coats or just one time at the end before the clear starts going on?
verhoevenc
Once at the end will do just fine. Then clear away Chris
J_48_Johnson
Thanks dude. I was wondering about that. No where did I find the answer. Everything I have read just says, "scrape the binding". Says nothing about when to do it, just to do it. lol
Drak
I don't think that's ^ really accurate unless you understand something not mentioned yet, the most important point. Scraping binding of finish is only applicable if you do it within about 1/2 hour after the finish is applied...time for it to set up and harden...a little. But it still needs to be a little soft too, not quite totally hardened. Whether you leave it open and spray your color coats over it to scrape them off later, or you're taping it off and pulling tape after the color coats, you must do it within 20 minutes - 1/2 hour after finish go on. If you wait too long to pull tape or to scrape the color off the untaped binding, you'll chip the finish because it's hardened. So the biggest point to remember is whichever way you do it, you must do it Soon after you've shot finish.
