HumanFuseBen
That pretty well sums it up! I have a wenge headstock that needs to be painted gloss black. What should i do to prep?
Juntunen Guitars
What have you done so far?
HumanFuseBen
Absolutely nothing. I'm looking at a raw wenge headstock that wants to be black! I await your commands!
Juntunen Guitars
What kind of paint are you using, how are you applying it and are you clearing it?
Prostheta
Last time I painted Wenge, I grain filled with thin CA scraped across using a razor blade. The pores are so large that you need to guarantee they are sealed, unless you are going for a textured look.
HumanFuseBen
Okay cool, i can do that. As for paint, i haven't quite decided; since its just plain black, i could go the rattle can route, or have a buddy of mine that paints cars for a living shoot it after i've prepped it. Juntunen Guitars
Either way works for paint but with rattle cans you need to put double the coats you would if you sprayed it from a gun because it's so much thinner. I used grain filler from Cardinal for my last build. I found it worked best to brush it across the grain then use the tip of the brush to blot it down into the pores then I just scraped it off once it flashed off about 70%. Just a question but since wenge is dark anyways why are you painting it?
HumanFuseBen
Okay, i've applied a coat of CA, sanded it, did another coat, and sanded it again. It feels super smooth now! Whats the next step? Does anything else need to be done before prime and paint can begin?
